Edwin Jackson

If we could flip Gomez and a handful of prospects to Detroit for Granderson and Jackson that would be, well awesome. But its probably just a dream.
I wouldn't put it past the 'stache. The reason the Tigers wanted nothing to do with Hardy is the same reason they want to move Jackson - they want to shed payroll. Adding Hardy's salary for Jackson would be treading water. This way the Brewers move Hardy, whom they probably view as too much of a risk for his salary and an equal and cheaper option ready in Escobar, and get the CF they want in Granderson. Granderson is only due $5.5M in 2010, so they clear $5M from Cameron there.

The net would eventually be for Cameron's salary they get Granderson and Jackson plus shed Hardy's salary. Or for Cameron and Hardy (plus say Salome, Peralta and Rivas with Gomez) they get Granderson, Jackson, and ~$4M. They then get the SP for Hardy. Absolute genius if Melvin can pull this one off.

I love the idea of Jackson and Granderson just as much as the next guy, but that offer is way too light, IMO.

It sounds like Melvin would be open to dealing for Jackson but it is up to the Tigers GM to see if there is any match. The article says the Tigers want you pitching. I guess it depends how young we are talking about. We don't have any really good major league ready talent but if he is looking for some talent to break in in 2011 and 2012 and then we might have a match.

Tough to know what qualifies as young pitching and what they might be interested in. From the major league level, Parra and even Villaneuava might be sought. Possibly Dave Bush. But you are right, there is nothing really that they can pencil in at AAA that would seem to fit.

What would be nice is if they'd send us Jackson for McGehee, one of CV/Bush, and a C list pitcher (in the 20-30 range on the power 50).

Tigers badly need late inning relief help. Rodney and Lyon are FA. Todd Coffey would be a guy they would covet. Maybe a combination of Gamel, Gomez, Coffey and Parra could net Jackson and Granderson.

If Melvin is confident he can bring back Vargas, I think they could use Coffey in a deal.

I would rather not make a big sacrifice (like Gamel) for Jackson. I think that the Brewers would be better served trying to find "next year's Edwin Jackson" - a guy with big time potential and upside who comes cheap... a reclamation project, I guess.

The problem is finding this years's Jackson. Deals like Jackson and Garza still netted Matt Joyce and Delmon Young. So a Gamelesque prospect was dealt then anyway. You have to give talent to get talent.

Edwin Jackson makes alot of sense to me. A Gallardo, Jackson 1-2 would look pretty solid.

Theres not many top of the rotation guys out there to be had and his salary wouldnt cripple us from signing another starter in free agency like a Lackey signing would.

Anyone in particular you think Melvin should be targeting?

After looking through some names here are a few possibilities (I've seen a few of these names tossed around here before)... Andrew Miller, Brandon Morrow, Luke Hochevar and Jason Hirsh (real long shot, with the Yankees system now).

I'd be happy w/ Edwin Jackson. He really took a step forward last year, especially in the first half of the season. He started to slip in August and September, but I'd be willing to take a chance on him. He has huge potential, and is only 25, I don't think we've seen the best of him yet.

Fwiw, James has a 4.75 ERA projected for Jackson in '10. That's kind of surprising to me, only since James's projections tend to be the most optimistic.

Proof of James being optimistic: Manny Parra is projected at a 4.59 ERA (and a FIP of 3.93). Kind of makes you temper your excitement of a Gamel-for-Jackson swap when you see that Bill James thinks Manny Parra will have a better 2010 than Jackson, doesn't it? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

If the Brewers are going to trade Gamel for Jackson, I would at least hope that Doug would be able to get another nugget coming back in the deal. It would be awesome to expand it to Jackson and Granderson, but I don't think the Brewers have the pieces that Detroit would be looking for.
