Randy Wolf- Latest: Multiple sources say done deal with Brewers

yoshii8

Doesn't look like Davis or Washburn are likely unless they fall into bargain status later.

Doug does mislead a lot, though, as Tom H has said multiple times that he doesn't want to give any indication that he's pursuing guys to drive up competition with other teams.

Isn't Penny listed as the #4 most comparable pitcher to Wolf on Baseball Reference? (Or the other way around?) I thought I saw that the other day. They're not identical, but the difference in quality and the difference in money doesn't add up at all.

Reliability? How do we know Wolf is so dependable? His last two years, sure. The three years before that, absolutely the opposite. Tommy John surgery in 2005 and shoulder surgery in 2007, sounds risky to me.

"Second-best FA avilable" argument. Three points:

(1) If you were in the market for a car and the second best car on the lot was a 1995 Taurus with 100,000 miles with a sticker of $10,000, you'd go for it? I think you'd explore something else.

(2) If Wolf hadn't spent so much time in the markets of L.A. and Philly, I doubt if he'd be hyped nearly as much as this next-best-thing-to-Lackey billing. If he'd played with the Astros last year, we'd be less excited to get him and he's probably be signable for less. There's too much emotion and unsubstantiated inflation in this deal.

(3) I guarantee Wolf won't put up the second-best numbers of this FA class next year. Probably not even top 5. I think it's a much better idea to try to catch lightning in a bottle with multiple FAs and there are enough intriguing names on this year's list to make that possible. Cheaper, shorter term, and just as likely to succeed, in my opinion.

How can you guarantee that valpo? He has been very good, his last 300 innings pitched, so why is he all of a sudden going to just drop off? I know you're trying to convince people that this is a bad signing, but what is the point of throwing out useless guarantees that you have no idea if they will come true or not?

There is no reason come January that Doug can't pick up one of two of the shorter term, riskier pitchers. However I agree with Doug that he needs to get atleast one stable guy that he can count on. Considering what is available this year, Wolf is the guy. I just can't believe people are really complaining so much about Wolf considering the awesome year he had last year. If he pitches anywhere close to that 3/27 is an absolute steal.

That'd be apt if Penny hadn't trended way down the last two years, while Wolf has trended up after his injury seasons in 06 and 07.

I guess this means it's official (maybe?):

From MLBTR

11:22am: Yahoo's Tim Brown tweets that the Brewers will agree with Wolf today on a three-year deal worth just under $30MM.

You don't have an Adam Wainwright. Easily the best gentlemen in all of sports. You don't have the amount of real good old American men like the Cardinals do. Holliday, Wainwright, Skip, Berkman those 4 guys are incredible people

Good signing. A good lefty is essential against teams like Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Philly, Atlanta.

People that say this is like a Suppan signing. They are crazy. Suppan was never the second best free agent pitcher. The money was more plentiful for all teams in 2006. Wolf Would've got 4/60 if this were 2006.
