Brewers clubhouse sale 2009: December 4-5

hawing

We arrived at about 12:30 and (including a trip to the regular price store upstairs) left a little before 2:00. There were two customers ahead of us at the sale checkout, but otherwise we encountered no lines at all.

The BP jerseys that were $25 looked like many of the same ones that hung in the discount section of the terrace level store throughout the 2009 season (like the Alec Zumwalt jersey I actually dreamt of once during the season - it still came down to my knees so I continued to pass it up).

This year the game-worn jerseys included a bunch from 2008, many at prices that would suggest perceived extra value because they were worn during the "wild card" year. Other posters have described the prices accurately. I thought of bensheeps when I saw the Hall gamer, then gasped aloud when I saw the $800 price tag. Then I saw the Suppan jersey also going for $800 and thought, which one should be more embarrassed by their being priced the same? I assume the Brewers will be putting any Hall and Suppan merchandise proceeds into their respective contracts.

I absolutely do not get the $1500 price on the Counsell jersey. Are they trying to make sure a local fan bent on voodoo can't afford it?

I won't lie - I gave a long look at the Branyan jerseys (one navy, one gray, and two retro) but $350 modern/$300 retro for something that I hope I never get large enough to have fit me...I couldn't do it.

I had decided before the sale, though, that if they had a navy jersey at a decent price with a non-embarrassing name, I might spring for it. So when I saw the $100 Mota jersey, I laughed; when I saw the Tavarez jersey, I remembered the poster who said in last year's sale thread that he wanted to buy one (I've PMd him already); but when I saw the '08 Iribarren (#26) for $150, I did buy it. If the Hurricane tanks or is traded, all I need is a P, another A, a seam ripper and needle and thread and I can turn it into a Parra jersey.

Outside the game-worn merchandise, I just wasn't impressed. There was a predictable amount of Hardy gear (including some "Hot for Hardy" shirts for which I was not hot) and some Hall. There were shirts I remember from the terrace store discount racks. There seemed to be an awful lot of jerseys/tops whose 'sale' price was $50, which I'm sure represented a discount but didn't seem like a deal. The 2009 locker nameplates seemed quite highly priced ($75 for Corey Patterson and John Axford, which should make Axford mad; hundreds more for anyone of note). The older nameplates were more amusing. JD Closser from 2005, Tony Migliaccio from some prior year but $10 for that didn't offend me, and your choice of Julio Santana or Julio Santanna. (Last year I scored the 2008 Branyan nameplate for $60, which is why Vgmaster did not find one this year.)

And if anyone remembers those black lace caps from the 2008 sale...they were back, and there seemed to be more of them! $5 for those seems a little insulting.

There was no Bernie merchandise or sausage merchandise at the sale. The Brewers did offer a regular-store discount to fans who spent $100 or more at the sale, so we were able to get a modest discount on some regular price items that we'd been eyeing for Christmas gifts.

Overall, it felt to me like the Brewers either sold enough merch this year so they didn't have as wide a selection left over, or they've already been reducing the breadth of their merchandise selection and so didn't have a wide variety left over. I don't feel like the trip was a waste - I enjoy having a reason to visit the ballpark - but I'd give the selection a 4 out of 10.

I didn't know you got a discount in the fanzone if you spent more than 100! Shoot.

If anyone watched Channel 12 WISN news last night at 6 (maybe 10 too), SgtClueLs and I were shown browsing through the memorabilia with our friends. I haven't seen it yet, but friends told us about it.

Sgt just went to see if anything new came out today...and it didn't. Prices didn't go down either. Looks like the "everything must go" mentality from last year is gone.

The Hurricane jersey should fit you, right Laura? He's kind of a little guy. You should see Aaron in the Spurling jersey - it's hilarious.

Yeah, at the checkout they had small photocopied and hastily trimmed notes that said 10% off your Team Store order if you spent $100 at the sale; 20% off for $200; 30% off for $300 or more. Maybe we noticed because it was so much calmer at the sale checkout when we were there. I was in the 20% off range, thanks to the jersey purchase.

The discount is good through today, so you could return today with your receipt from Friday and I imagine they would honor it.

Hurricane fits me OK, better than the Sharpie jersey (size 46 vs. 48); plus navy favors me a lot more than white or gray. It's ridiculously long on me, but that's normal.

The sales are more fun when they bring out unexpected but cool items. One year, for example, there was signage left over from the All-Star Game/Tie/Sham. The most unexpected thing I saw on Friday was a bunch of office chairs for $25 each. Unexpected, but lacking in the cool factor.

They brought out 2008 Postseason signage when we made our second trip on Friday. I think they were $40 each.

Wow we bought a bunch of stuff for us and others as well, so I'd have 30% off. We might have to go back today. Thanks for the heads up.

Dang it! I might have put down $40 for postseason signage.

In that WISN clip to which I linked above, it looks like there was significantly more merchandise early on Friday than by noon (comparing the video to my memory). However, I don't mind not having had to wait in the tunnel for however long you guys had to wait, and I definitely don't mind not having had to get up at 6 or earlier to get to Milwaukee that early.

Yeah, I definitely would have dropped $40 for a postseason sign. My friend and I live in the Fox Valley, we left at 7:30 to get there by 9 yesterday, not sure I would do that again, as it was like Black Friday. Like a said before, I got a really nice winter jacket for my dad for $50 which was originally $185, it was the last one on the rack, so it was worth it that way, although they could have had a ton more which they just restocked, I'm not sure. I also got a polo shirt for myself for $20, which was originally $60, so there are decent deals for clothes. I just bought a house, so I was hoping for more signage or household stuff, since as a single guy, my decorating scheme is Brewers. Last year they had this wooden cabinet with dartboard for $75, which I had in my hand and almost bought, but didn't. I so regret that now, as it would be perfect in my new basement.

Just got back and bought a game-used away Gabe Gross jersey for $150. I was hoping to find a Hall for a similar price, but those were over $500 i think. A Hall nameplate was $200! Kind of surprised at the prices ($800 for a Soup, come on now), but couldn't be more thrilled with the Gross find. Its a size 48 too, so I should be able to actually wear it too, which is nice.

I went this morning mainly because I couldn't see taking a day off work for it. I didn't expect much in that there were some very good deals to be had during the season in the Terrace store. The 4 stadium seats were still there. I picked up a couple of pennants, a JJ mini big head, a pair of boxers, a pair of work out pants, and a couple of $5 shirts.

  • 11 months later...

I'm semi-expecting it to be December 3-4, as that would fit the pattern of recent years. They don't usually announce it very far in advance.

We have to email our ticket rep this week anyway, so when we do I'll ask. In the past he's been cool about sending me a heads-up.

Also, thanks for reminding me that I was going to clear December 3 as a day off. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Edit: Once I have confirmed dates for 2010, I'll start a 2010 sale thread.

hawing,

Nate was out sick today when I tried to call to renew my tickets and he didn't sound that great on his message so who knows when he'll be around. Just a heads up.
