Do we need a bat at the deadline or just slumping?

LUKE232323

I didn't take the time this morning to look up our offensive numbers in the last 15-20 games (I'm sure someone will for me and maybe even prove me incorrect), but it seems like ever since Hall went down we have been extremely inconsistent scoring runs and lately we've just been inept all together. Do people think we need to add a bat at the deadline, or are the players just not performing up to their capabilities lately and that will straighten itself out.

Personally, I think Hall coming back will help a lot because he bumps everyone else down one spot on the needed production pecking order. However, with so much youth at the top of the lineup, something like a Dunn trade is looking mighty nice right now, barring not having to give up the farm for him.

i agree that we will benefit having hall back in the lineup. i dont even have to look at the numbers to know that we need another veteran righthanded OF. also i think we need to get another experienced quality starting pitcher for the stretch run. do i need to mention middle relief ? balfour and spurling are not going to cut it. the brewers are in uncharted waters right now and we must make moves to keep improving. I dont care what MA says, about only needing middle relief, we need more depth at all of the above.

The Crew is only hitting .217 since the AS break. Good for 2nd worst in the Majors. Extrapolated even further since Hall went down, I don't know what it is, but I am sure it's just as bad or even worse. I have said too since Hall went down, this teams hitting woes started.

I'm all for getting a big bat at the deadline.

I'd be looking at LF. Dunn is the most logical choice here.

I'd then package one of Mench/Jenkins for best possible deal, considering both will likely be gone after this season anyway.

Hart

Hardy

Braun

Fielder

Hall

Dunn

Estrada

Weeks

Yes please.

I would definitely hit Dunn second. Hardy is killing them right now up there. He can't get on base to save his life.

Check this out. Since May 9th (the day his hitting streak ended) Hardy has a .288 OBP:

That is a major issue and no one notices it, because he's kind of beloved.

That said, I don't anticipate any big moves at all, either with the rotation or the lineup. The team as constructed is good enough to win the division, they're just slumping right now.

Given Dunns OBP that's not a bad idea, especially with Hardy slumping. Maybe him hitting with Braun as protection will give him more to hit, hopefully limiting his high K rate somewhat.

A lot of people are down on Dunn because of his K's, but even what has been called a "down year" for him he still has a .900 + OPS.

I still don't get the "trade Jenkins" crowd right now. The guy has suffered for so many years on this club with all the losing and the injuries and now we're successful and you want to just trade the guy for something "better" in Dunn.

Trade Jenkins in the off-season? Yes definitely Melvin should try.

Trade Jenkins at this year's deadline? No way. Give the guy the pennant race that he deserves.

I've been torn on this one for a long time. The two biggest holes in the offense have been 2B and LF. I think there is a lot of sentiment toward keeping Jenkins due to his long service with the Brewers and finally getting a chance to win. Also, who other than Dunn would actually start for us? As for 2B, I think we will be ok with Graffy and hopefully Weeks can turn it up. I think a Hall return is really all that we are going to get, and hopefully the young guys can pick it back up. My predicted pickups at the deadline are Jeff Conine and David Weathers. Zach Jackson and possibly Sarfate go bye-bye.

We wouldn't be able to trade Jenkins this offseason unless we picked up his $9 million dollar option. And if we picked up the option at that price, teams are probably not going to want him at that price. If Jenks gets traded, it'll be before the deadline, or during the middle of '08 if we did pick up the option and played him for the first half.

This is probably fodder for another thread, but I wonder what will happen to Jenkins this offseason. Do the Brewers just decline the option and say goodbye?

Why do you have better in quotations? Are you actually trying to imply that Dunn isn't that much better than Jenkins? Jenkins OPS since May 15th is .680, and that's with the benefit of almost exclusively facing RHP. That's not really cutting it for a corner outfielder on a team that hopes to make the playoffs. Dunn's OPS during the same timeframe is .863, and he is over .900 for the entire season. Comparing these two players, it's not even close.

I understand the loyalty factor with Jenkins, but winning needs to be #1 priority, no matter what. If Jenkins would be happy sticking around as a 2-3 starts per week reserve outfielder for the rest of the year just to be on a winning team, that's fine with me. Other than that, I couldn't really care less about him. I just want the team to be as good as possible. If the Brewers can upgrade from him, it needs to happen.

statistically, sure, I understand that Dunn is "better" than Jenkins. To me, though, Dunn is a one-trick pony--he hits homers. okay, two tricks--he also walks. All right, three tricks--he strikes out . . . .alot.

Just my opinion on this of course.

You know what we like to call that: 3TO

Come on, I mean he could be a Branyan Plus!!!

Jenkins career line against righties.. .290/.361/.528/.889

Dunn's career line against righties.. .251/.389/.552/.945

Jenkins is past his peak already, Dunn should just be hitting his. Dunn is a horrible fielder but Jenkins has been below average this year too.

Dunn also hits lefties better than Jenkins so he can play every day. I don't really see how you can say Dunn isn't an upgrade.

To me, those are two of the most important things (if not the most important things) a player can do in terms of pure "run production". Jenkins doesn't really do either of those things at a high level nowadays. Dunn has pretty much been 40 HR, 100 runs scored, 100 RBI, 100 BB for three years (last year he was 40, 99, 92, 112 but you get the point) and he will be right there again this year.

And this is coming from someone who got on the soapbox all offseason saying to keep Jenkins. They don't need to trade him if they get Dunn, either.

Ennder, what makes you say Jenkins has been below average in the field this year?

Though I know errors don't tell the whole story because it could just mean he didn't make it to some balls he should of, but he has 1 error so far this year and 5 assists, putting him roughly on pace for roughly his career average of 10 a year.

Not only that I seem to remember quite a few diving catches that meant a whole lot in the games they were made.

I would have to agree at this point, though, that Dunn would probably be an upgrade offensively, because heck, we might as well get more homeruns if the guy we have is hitting .260.

But I'd still take Jenkins.
