College Basketball 2009-2010 (part 1)

The problem with the UW student section is due to bad policy by the Athletic Department, not bad fans. There are more than enough people willing to fill those seats, but they give out the tickets to a select number of students who were lucky enough to get into the server when the tickets went on sale. There needs to be a policy to reward people who actually show up and prevent those who do not from buying tickets the following year.

As for football--there are enough loyal student football fans to fill about 2 sections, the rest are there for the drinking and Jump Around. That will probably never change.

I get so frustrated when the Badgers end up settling for jumpers like this. 90% of their shots have been jumpers. Rob Wilson is the only one trying to get to the basket with regularity.

Demitri McCamey is good.

When the team couldn't buy a jumper, why didn't Bo put Wilson back in the game for Jarmusz? I know Bo must like that Jarmusz doesn't turn the ball over and is a solid defender, but he couldn't create his own shot if his life depended on it and there were already 4 other jump shooters on the court with Jarmusz. I just wonder why though Bo won't give Wilson more PT when the offense gets stagnant, i can't fathom that Wilson is that much of a defensive downgrade from Jarmusz that Jarmusz has to get 30 minutes.

Students are spoiled. They expect to win now and if UW isn't playing a big game they just don't care. Not that I'm complaining....just different expectations from when I was in school.

I definitely noticed the subdued crowd that game, even from watching on tv. That could explain some part of lackluster home performances this season against Illinois, Penn St. and Michigan.

I've been at every single basketball game this season besides Ohio State. The only game where I thought there was a problem was this last Illinois game. There just wasn't an energy in the student section. I think it can half be blamed on the teams lackluster proformance and the fact that they never really got on a run. During the Michigan and Penn State games the crowd was definitely in the game.

I'm not 100% on board with this. I was surprised at how energetic the people around me (in a non-student section) were during the Michigan game, even when the Badgers were behind by a good bit.

Also, though I think there's something to homer's observation about expectations, I would dare extend it to at least parts of the non-student section, as well as to parts of the student section. As an example, the seats to our right at basketball games used to always be occupied by the same guy, with a varying guest. We've only seen him for Duke, Purdue and Michigan State this year, and he didn't find (or maybe didn't seek) takers for those seats for most of the non-conference season.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

Good thing we don't make sweeping generalizations about the students...

OK. Some students. Lets hear your reasoning for why they don't show up for games.

Well here is all you should need to know. I told you they would not do very well if they stepped up to another conference and if the top teams in this conference lose a few more games the conference could fall below the A10 or the mountain west. The big ten is a battle but that is because it's an average conference.

Did you look at your link for the 2008-2009 season? There is no way that the Big East was the 4th best conference last year.

Like I said, there are plenty of students to show up for games and cheer enthusiastically. However, many of them are watching on TV. I love college basketball and spent 4 years at Wisconsin, but I never had the fortune to actually get student season tickets. Fair weather fan students have about 50% of the basketball tickets. They go to the big games and their tickets go unused for the other games--or they scalp them to other students who actually like basketball at ridiculous rates. The only way to solve the issue is to scan IDs or offer a reward system for actually using the tickets. The Izzone does this, I do not understand why Wisconsin will not.

Basically, it would be like the Brewers just doing a general lottery for playoff tickets, where a season ticket holder for 30 years would get the same chance at tickets as somebody who goes to 1 game per year.

I don't know why some don't show up, all I know is that when I go I try to get as close as I can. I think there's way too many students that try to sell the tickets, but those often don't care about actually going (which obviously sucks because it makes the rest of the students look bad). I'm sure this happens at other arenas as well. I wish it didn't, but there's not much I can do about it.

I bet if you filled up the other sections starting from the bottom up, you'd probably have empty seats at the top, too, unfortunately.

Did anyone else buy tickets for the tourney games being played at the Bradley Center this year? They took my money last April and I haven't heard a thing since then. I believe tickets were supposed to be delivered no later than mid-February and I think we're basically at that point. Just wondering if anyone else has seen their tickets yet.

Didn't buy tickets, but here's the info on tickets. If they don't come within the next couple of days, you should contact the Marquette ticket office.

Yeah, that's why I said it could, because I didn't remember noticing a dead crowd for those games. I just noticed it the other night for Illinois and was thinking maybe things were similar for those other games.

Pitt beat West Virginia so I guess that means the Big East is full of average teams.

I bought some in December through razorgator.com because I had missed out on getting them when they originally went on sale. If you don't mind could you tell me how much they cost you and for what sessions and section they were for? I'm just wondering how that compares to the prices to get them now.

I figured Syracuse was going to be in rough shape this year after their exhibition game. See the 2nd & 3rd posts from this thread. Apparently, they recovered nicely from that loss.

I saw Syracuse lost to a D-II school last night. Nice.

I saw a headline that said "LeMoyne stuns 'Cuse" and thought it was some guy named LeMoyne that had hit a three or something.

IU is just terrible. Crean is a terrible coach. I don't think they'll ever be that good while he's there.
