Anybody else have a Dew addiction?

I don't use 5 hr energy... except for one situation. Heard this from a friend, and tried it on a weekend up north.

Take one before you start drinking. It's like hangover kryptonite. Don't know what's in there, but I felt like a million damn dollars when our tee time came the next morning.

B vitamins. You'd get the same effect taking a multivitamin, or drinking OJ before you go to bed.

Wow - this thread is like a time capsule. Saw my old post from 2009. Still battling similar deal in 2012.

Total Dew addict. Average two cans a day. However:

I reached an apex in December 2011. Just after Christmas, I crossed over to the heaviest I've ever been: 227. (I was 225 when we got married in 2005).

Made a commitment - did not drink an ounce of Mt. Dew from January 1st to May 1st. Went from 227 down to 204. Then work got crazy. Started drinking one here and there. Then these past few months I've been back up to two a day. See the weight start to come back... 205, 206, 207, 208...

So now I've been off it for a week again... will probably never be able to truly give it up... there are a lot of people who just find Mt. Dew disgusting. And others of us who think it's the greatest beverage ever created. I wonder what the science is behind that?

Anyway...

The people who think it is disgusting have no sense of taste and those who love it obviously have an enlightened sense of taste. That is the unscientific explanation. At least, that is what I'm going with. BTW, I love the Dew.

Over the holidays my brother came to visit and I got to learn the extent of his Dew addiction when we walked 5 blocks through the snow on Christmas Day to find an open gas station so he could buy a Mountain Dew. I don't understand it, but I can't be the hypocrite since I started smoking again.

I'm going to quote my post from 2010. I've come to find out that my brother now has $48,000 worth of dental work coming his way. I don't know exactly how much is to blame on his Mountain Dew habit, but you can bet it's a lot. His teeth have almost literally rotted away.

I drank a lot of Mountain Dew years ago. I wanted to give it up because soda is so unhealthy and Mountain Dew was really the only soda I drank. The hardest part was going to a restaurant and not having one. I was eventually able to give it up, and now I haven't had one in probably two years. I have no desire to drink Mountain Dew at all anymore. It took me about 6 months of trying to give it up before I didn't care to have one anymore.

If you drink one 20oz bottle a day, that's 275 calories. Over a full year that adds up to almost 29 pounds. I just kept telling myself that every time I wanted to get one. Now if only I could cut down on my alcohol consumption...

$48,000?!?...is that a typo? It's not supposed to be $4,800?? I never heard of a dental expense to that extent!

New teeth cost a lot!

I was deep in the sauce that is Diet Mt Dew back in 2009. I never really drank soda at home, just when I'd grab fast food. Diet Mt Dew was the only diet soda I had ever tasted that was close enough to drinking regular soda, so I just would have one here and there. The next thing I knew, I was drinking 2 in the morning, one mid afternoon and then maybe one at night. I know the one in the afternoon was for the pick me up, but I just really loved the sweetness.

After awhile and reading about how bad diet soda is for you, I just stopped drinking it. I find, if you don't buy it, you won't drink it! I'll grab one every once and awhile on a road trip, and still love it, but I'm glad I'm not drinking it like I used to.

I'd say the easiest way to get away from it is by drinking some black coffee for the pick me up. That will stop any issues with headaches. Because black coffee is not such an addictive taste, I feel it's easy to not drink it every day (when you don't need a boost). Then you can slowly take that out of your intake.

My problem is I love a warm cup of coffee in the morning when it's cool out. So I really drink a lot more coffee/espresso in the winter months.

For $48,000 I would expect to get some gold plated teeth. That can't seem possible. All my cavities over the years from my Dew addiction probably amounted to maybe $4,800 in dental bills.

My father in law never brushed his teeth a day in his life and just had them all ripped out and got set up with some dentures. Even that bill was only like $5-$6,000.

My name is Myday, and I'm an addict........

High school and college, I had ~3-4 a day or more, and for a few years after it kept up.

I've gotten myself down to 1 can a day (its my coffee cuz I dont like hot drinks and coffee is gross), a 24oz'er for Brewer games I attend.

Lucky for me I have had NO dental problems as a result. I feel i got the good teeth in the family. I do drink water and juice at home. I cannot drink a soda as I get up at 3am and to drink something with caffeine just wont let me sleep soundly enough.

You knew me as Myday2001.

I don't think I was ever addicted to Dew, but as a kid I definitely loved it. I rarely drink soda now, and if I do it's usually a white soda (oh, but I do have a weakness for good root beer). All it took for me to get burned out on soda was working in a restaurant in college where the staff was allowed to use the soda fountain as much as it wanted. I never thought of soda as liquid candy until I'd been drinking it every day for months. Totally turned me off to it. Now I can't drink non-white soda & not think of it as just a melted & chilled candy bar (except root beer, mmm...).

Yes, $48,000 is correct. My brother, who is 24 years old, has gone a long time without brushing, going to a dentist, drinking MASS amounts of Mountain Dew and chewing regularly for 5 years. You have to understand that his teeth are rotted to stubs and he won't get work done unless he is put under, which is additionally expensive. He is going to get a second opinion. Mountain Dew is a terrible product.

EDIT: I want to add that I am the exact opposite of my brother in this respect. I won't drink soda unless it's with a fast food meal. I brush and floss twice a day and use whitening products on a regular basis. I was even arrested one time for stealing a tube of Rembrandt Extra Whitening toothpaste from a grocery store because it was $9 a tube and I was a broke college kid (no joke, put it under my avatar). I don't know how two brothers can be so opposite when it comes to dental hygiene.

Whoa. Not to make light of your brother's woes at all, Schlitz001, but his story could be posted in dentists' waiting rooms for a "scared straight" type message.

Another fellow addict checking in. College was the worst, easily a 30 pack every few days. Post college hasn't been that bad but long work hours and not being a coffee drinker don't help. So a few years ago I stopped buying any for at home and for the last month I've been sticking to the diet mt dew variety. Still at 2-3 a day though. Would like to get that down lower still.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I drank a TON in college, and now that i am out and working third shift, i find myself drinking less, but still a lot. I probably go through 3 a work day(none usually on weekends), with almost all of them happening at work. I actually drank LESS until i started this third shift job about 6 months ago(maybe 1 a day, at most). I assume I'll cut back once i get a regular hours job. For now, daddy needs his caffeine intake.

  • 8 months later...

So, I have not had a Mt. Dew or any soda since the Tuesday after Memorial Day (May 28). Longest stretch since I was probably a child. I've been searching healthier substitutes. I'm liking Sparkling Ice flavored water. I know someone is going to say that the artificial sweetener is unhealthy. I think that's debatable and I would still argue that it's a healthier alternative to Soda.

The issue that I'm having is when it comes to adult beverages. I'm not a beer drinker and my beverage of choice has always been brandy and coke. Completely out of principal I don't want to have soda at all, not even in a mixed drink. On the occasions that I have had a drink at home I have had vodka and lemonade or even vodka and Gatorade (again, I realize lemonade or Gatorade is probably not any healthier than soda..but I don't want to drink soda). The issue is when we go out. We went to a festival a couple of weeks ago and I had a couple of beers, but again, beer is really not my thing. So, we may be going out to a bar this weekend. Can someone give me some suggestion of mixed drinks that A) do not contain soda B) do not appear to look to fruity (i.e. red in color) and C) I can easily order at most bars (many bars don't have lemonade to mix with drinks).

There are tons of good drinks with juice, but those usually give the appearance that you aren't going for (fruity). Here's a few without juice that aren't too bad. I didn't read the entire thread, so I apologize if you said you don't like some of these things. These are all very easy drinks that any bar can make.

Vodka tonic with a lime

Vodka and redbull

Blood Mary

Martinis

Long Island Ice Teas (this has about one ounce of coke in it)

Whiskey and Iced Tea

Whiskey/Bourbon and water

Old Fashion (this is only really known in WI though from what I've discovered)

Mojito

White Russian

Hopefully one or two of those work for you. If not, I can probably come up with more.

Brandy Old Fashions are my drink of choice; but the quality of the drink will vary greatly from bar to bar. Plus some places will put a soda like 7up in it and even in WI some places are just lousy at making it. I love the good ones though.

I had kicked my dew addiction for a while but when we had our 2nd kid 6 weeks ago and my sleeping suffered I got into a morning MD habit again. Atleast it is still only maybe 5 sodas a week; I have been much worse than that in the past.
