New New Music Thread

thebruce44

A quick search and I couldn't find the old thread so I thought I would start a new one.

The Flaming Lips new album, Embryonic, is taking me some time to get into. I am not very familiar with their older work, but love the last 3 albums. The new cd is not nearly as poppy as the last three, but is still very good. I think it will grow on me over time, but right now some of the tracks are tough listens.

Wolfmother's new cd, Cosmic Egg is at the other end of the spectrum for me. Instantly accessible and just really frikin' good. I expected no less, but was still a little nervous since its basically an entirely new band. I would recommend both, but where Embryonic might not be for everyone, Cosmic Egg certainly is.

I've been listening to the new Tegan and Sara that comes out this Tuesday and I like it quite a bit. Seems more catchy than the Con, which I liked but took some time to grow on me.

Also, check out my band's new album if you like guitar-pop. It is shamelessly linked in my sig http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

I saw Cage the Elephant last night at the Cubby Bear. I wasn't a huge fan of the CD, but they put on a pretty amazing show. It was by far the rowdiest crowd I have ever seen at such a small venue and the band fed off of it and got into the mix quite a bit.

I really like Embryonic and consider it a return to form from the mis-step that was 2006's At War With The Mystics. AWWTM was too up and down for my tastes, while Embryonic is more cohesive.

Here are some others I've purchased recently (and talking music just isn't the same without pictures):

Popular Songs by Yo La Tengo is another winner from them. If you've liked what they've done in the past, go get it. Otherwise, this one ain't going to change your mind. Their output in this decade has been just amazing though.

I also picked up Love 2, by Air. It's a ridiculous title with a ridiculously cheesy album cover and some ridiculously cheesy sounds, but damn if these guys don't win me over every time. It's not as great as Moon Safari, or as consistent as 2007's underrated Pocket Symphony, but it holds its own. Everything French is gold. (For more proof, see Phoenix.)

Released a few months back, Octahedron was considered to by Mars Volta to be their "pop record". It's a definite detour from the sprawling and dissonantly melodic songs/jams of their prior records, but it's a move that paid off in my opinion. The songs on Octahedron are more concise for sure, but at the same time they're a bit more ambient and spacey. Since their split from ATDI, this is as close to mainstream as these guys will ever get. It's probably my favorite since their debut.

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix by Phoenix is another one that's been out for a while. The first 5 songs are absolute perfection and even before '1901' was in every other Cadillac commercial this fall, I considered it to be the song of the summer. They were on SNL last spring and performed virtually flawless renditions of 'Lisztomania' and '1901'.

I had pretty high hopes for the Avett Brother's new album (I and Love and You) when I found out that Rick Rubin was going to produce it. Instead of encouraging the band to experiment and continue to evolve a bit, Rubin seems to have overproduced the whole thing. There is very little of the spontaneity and raw energy or emotion that drives their earlier albums. (Their live performances have even become kind of boring, which is almost unbelievable when you consider how crazy their shows were on past tours.)

I would support the positive review of Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix by Phoenix.

I would encourage folks to check out The Gossip's new(ish) album - Music for Men. Excellent live band as well.
