Brewers Working on a Deal for Shannon Stewart?

Well I'm under the impression that Jenkins, Mench and Clark are being actively shopped (based on articles and rumors). So I wouldn't be surprised if at least two of those three are gone. That leaves us:

  • Corey Hart
  • Bill Hall
  • Gabe Gross
  • TGJ
  • Laynce Nix

And I wouldn't be surprised if TGJ or Nix were included in a deal.

It sounds like we've got a busy offseason still ahead for us. And we have several decent bargaining chips.

Are we supposed to assume Stewart is our big outfield acquisition if we do sign him? What if we make a trade at the winter meetings that brings in a big bat and Stewart becomes our 4th/5th outfielder alongside Gross?

Depending on how much he signs for, I may very well prefer Stewart as our 4th/5th outfielder to Clark. Not to mention we'd then get a return on a Clark trade...

I just think it's too early to decide whether or not this would be a good pickup. We don't know Melvin's plan and whatever additional information he may have concerning Stewart's health.

He's just not enough of an upgrade. I'd rather commit to our youth and roll the dice, or go out and spend some real money and get a legit upgrade. Stop rummaging in the "spare parts" bin Doug.

I feel the same way. I admit that I am not really familiar with Stewart, but he doesn't strike me as the type of player who really excels at anything. If we were to get this guy, it would just feel like we are spinning our wheels and not really moving forward as a franchise.

I wish Melvin would pass.

Could be a Willie Randolf type call circa 1991, I think he is a great clubhouse guy and he is not that far removed from some top-tier baseball; I would bank on his recruitment for a platoon with Jenkins. Other then C Hart, it looks like they are pretty concerned with the rest of the gang stepping up. As am I.

Stewart's line as a Twin in 2003:

.322/.384/.470/.854

More proof that baseball writers aren't the brightest bunch of guys.

Nope as someone who lives in the Twin Cities I will tell you that he basically single handidly won the division for the Twins that year. He was the difference. Stats OFTEN don't tell the story. I will take a guy who watches every game of the season and doesn't know any stats opinion over a guy who only looks at numbers anyday.

The Brewers are angling for Counsell as a jack-of-all-trades infield reserve, and Stewart, who is limited in what he can do now, but is a good contact, OBP type when his body allows him to be.

One can spell an infielder who needs a rest, one could become a pinch hitting specialist.

Could it be that Cirillo is moving on?

From MLB.com . . .

On Tuesday, Melvin shot down an Internet rumor that the Brewers were negotiating with free-agent outfielder Shannon Stewart. The team has a three-year offer on the table to Dave Roberts, but Melvin still expects Roberts to sign with the Giants

(THANK GOD)
