ID question

sheetswannabe

Question for everyone here, I turn 21 on Feb. 22nd and me and a couple of my friends who will be 21 are going to Vegas. The thing is, they want to go when I turn 21, on the 22nd. I was wondering if I would have to renew my ID so it has the horizontal layout, or if they would be able to tell because it says I turn 21 on 2-22-2010. Just trying to save a hassle. Thanks in advance!

Also, anyone have any suggestions about what places to visit, cheap places to stay...

Thanks again!

It depends on the state. I would Google it online or call the Las Vegas PD. There are quite a few bars here in New Mexico that do not take vertical ID's. I'm not sure why they do that but I have seen that posted in lots of bras around here.

That just seems wrong that a bar/casino/whatever wouldn't take a valid ID b/c it looks different.

My brother was in Tucson visiting the Grand Canyon/family in March and they wouldn't serve him and his buddies at a bar because they had Wisconsin ID's.

I totally agree. I was really surprised to see it. Maybe they have problems here in NM or something. I have seen it so I thought I would just say to check with someone in Nevada. I can't seem to think you'd have an issue but I also never would have thought it would be an issue in NM either.

I can't help customers at my job who are under 21. I take vertical id's as long as the birth date says you are over 21. I'm in Wisconsin, but I've had other state ID's that had "Under 21" printed on them that I accepted. I would think a tourist destination like Vegas would be just as lenient.

I don't know anything about this vertical driver's license thing, but my first one just said "UNDER 21 UNTIL XXXXXXX" in big red letters across the top. I assume that this is the same idea. Anyway, I never had any issues with using that after I turned 21, FWIW.

As brewerfan82 said, Illinois has given me problems before. I was 23 at the time but my ID said "Under 21 until [xx-xx-xxx]. They wouldn't serve me because it said "Under 21" even though i was clearly of legal drinking age. This happened on more than one occasion (at a grocery store and a Blackhawks game). That's Illinois though. I come to expect outlandish things from that state. I can't imagine you'd have problems in Vegas though, as long as the license clearly states you are 21. Have fun!

I didn't even know that there was such a thing as a vertical ID. When I was 18 the legal age changed from 18 to 21. I was grandfathered in...just made it by 4 months.

1966 represent! I was in the same situation. My high school classmates born July 1 or later were unhappy, to say the least.

Actually, if I recall correctly, the drinking age changed in July 1984 from 18 to 19, then from 19 to 21 in September 1985. I remember this because of someone I know who turned 19 on September 11, 1985, and was also unhappy.

I can't say I'm an expert on this in any way, but I suppose businesses that rarely see out of state IDs might be more likely to refuse them, since they wouldn't be as familiar with what's real and what's fake. You'd think that would not be the case in Vegas, though.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

Yeah they ID wont expire until 2016. I was just making 100% sure, because finding that out there would not be cool.
I had the same problem when I went to Vegas when I was 21 I never got carded in the casinos but at the restaurants I got carded once and they didn't have a problem with it.

I think O'Shea's is a good place for guys your age to hang out. It's got cheap booze, cheap gambling ($5 min tables), beer pong, sports on TV....and Burger King.

It might be worth a call to check. Wrigley Field wouldn't serve me alcohol until I got an ID post-turning 21... even though my ID explicitly said I was under 21 until [insert date before alcohol purchase]. Then again, it was Wrigley Field...
Word for word, this happened to me, when I was 24 or 25 and trying to buy Old Style. No one underage is trying to buy Old Style.

I would also say, don't be surprised if you don't get carded at all, went to Vegas when I was 21 and a couple months, no one ever bothered. Especially now with them hurting for business, I don't expect a fuss. If there is a problem, there are 50 other places that will gladly have you.

Don't go to downtown Vegas, just don't. Do go to www.cheapovegas.com , I can't speak highly enough of the site

And, if nothing else, everyone should read how they describe The Western hotel
