Vernon Wells

shtiny

I was going through the salary structure of the team, and it seems to me that they could afford a contract like V. Wells and still stay below 60M. I am not sure what Weeks' contract number is for 2007, but according to:

mlbcontracts.blogspot.com...ewers.html

his number should be around 380K for 2007 (based upon 5.3/5 years)

Is there any way to package Jenkins and a couple prospects for Wells to make this happen??

I think you might be low on a couple of the arby-eligible players, but it certainly looks like it could work. Having said that, I just don't think it's in a team's best interest to have almost 1/3 of their payroll tied up in one player. Extending Wells would most certainly take a Soriano-like contract, so Mark A. would be committing those kind of dollars for 7 or 8 years. Not a good move for a financially-challenged team, IMO.

If he is a career .828 OPS guy then he should be paid right along the lines of other career .830 guys, namely Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Lee. The Market is crazy. Apparantly 40 OPS points make a guy go from making peanuts to 15+ million a year.

more creative financing is needed.

i noticed that Soriano's 2007 contract is $9M. that certainly is in the Milwaukee wheelhouse. throw in a massive signing bonus from one Mark A. day-trading session and

so what if the last five years are $18M? swing for the fences for 2 years, draw 40,000 for 81 games, go swimming in your money and trade him away, hoping you caught lightning in a bottle.

I hear you, although at least Lee had a .890 OPS 4 out of the last 5 years, and Soriano has hit 82 HR's in the last 2 years. Of course, Wells is a Gold Glover and Lee looks like he's dodging hand grenades on defense.

2003- .830

You meant to say that Carlos Lee had an OPS above .890 in 2 out of the last 5 years correct?

"Vernon Wells, who will be eligible for free agency for the first time next winter, has been omitted from the Blue Jays' 2007 ticket advertisements."

Looks like he will be traded. What is the asking price?

why would you trade our best player, who we have signed for 3 years, for a guy that isn't noticeably better and is about to be a free agent?

Because it's November 30, people have nothing better to talk about and love making trades just for the sake of making trades?

That is the only logical explanation I can think of.

Wells might not even be as good as Hall in 2007...and he surely will not be a Brewer in 2008 or 2009 - but apparantly that isn't important.

I'd love to get McGowan included in any Vernon Wells deal. That at least ensures we get something valuable past this year.

However, as Pogo points out, I wouldn't do it at the cost of Hall.

Obviously, TOR desperately needs a shortstop since they signed Clayton to be their starter...barf! I think Hardy's got more value than most of us think, so I'd start off a deal like this:

To Milwaukee:

  • OF Vernon Wells
  • SP Dustin McGowan

To Toronto:

  • SS JJ Hardy
  • OF Kevin Mench/Brady Clark/Geoff Jenkins (their choice)
  • RP Derrick Turnbow/Matt Wise (their choice)
  • OF Tony Gwynn Jr./Laynce Nix (their choice)
  • And maybe throw in Hendrickson if they want him

It might not take that much, but that's about as much as I'd be willing to sacrifice. In that scenario, we'd still be left with a couple chips to upgrade our bullpen further.
