Washburn turned down $5m for a year from the Twins so unless he comes down in price he's not going to be a Brewer

His issue might not be the amount but a second year. So I wouldn't rule out the Brewers based totally on that. Brewers could opt to backload a 2 year offer.

Actually, MLB Trade Rumors has this gem up about Sheets from late this morning:

11:50am: MLB.com's Carrie Muskat tweets that Cubs officials say Sheets' current asking price does not fit their budget. Sheets' agent Casey Close could stand to do a better job controlling the information on his client, because the reports of a $10-12MM demand make him look bad. Muskat says the Cubs are still looking for right-handed relief.

Pinero and Sheets would cost too much to fit into the brewers payroll and I wouldn't want any of the garland/davis/washburn trio , unless they are less than 5 mil/yr.

Wang, a righty with potential, would be an interesting addition to the brewers at the right price. The problem is that he wont start throwing off the mound until mid to late February and probably wont be ready to start until may. In my opinion, this could actually be beneficial for the brewers because they can have parra and suppan battle for the 5th pitching spot.

I think Doug Davis would be the only one to go near or under the 5 million. I'd still target Bedard his health doesn't seem as murky as Wang's. Although with Bedard its all about desire. Who knows if the Mets grab (Pinero & Garland)a couple arms might be able to get Maine for prospects.

At this point I'd really like to see us roll the dice on Smoltz if we're gonna sign another starter. Despite his Boston struggles he put up a 3.87 FIP, though the sample is so small and he was also coming back from injury that it's hard to put too much stock into any of the results. I think he was a little over 5 million last year, so maybe we could guarantee him 3 million or so and throw in another 3 or 4 in performance incentives.

After that I'd probably prefer (considering probable price/2010 production) Davis, Washburn, Garland in that order. I think all three would provide slight upgrades just by eating some innings, albeit in pretty ugly fashion.

As for the remaining injury guys, I'd still love to have Sheets back but I think that ship sailed long ago and his contract demands are probably my favorite thing of the entire 2010 offseason. So insane. I'd probably prefer Bedard to the trio of BLAH above but I don't see Melvin offering even a one year deal to someone who probably won't be ready to start the season and has had issues with motivation in the past, even though he does offer the highest potential upside after Benny. I see a Wang/Torre reunion in LA, too.

I would have to agree about Bedard, the only problem is having 3 lefty starting pitchers in the NL central. Here is how i would rank the probably SP for the brewers while considering cost, quality, and health concerns: Bedard Wang sheets Garland Davis Washburn Pinero

bobskube, good to see you around here again. Any insight as to who the Crew may actually be targeting?
No, I have not heard a thing. You hear anything besides usual suspects-Washburn, Davis, etc?

I have been out of the country until recently and have paperwork up the ying-yang. I am totally out of the loop. I'm meeting with my Cub friend (yes, I have a few) who works in front office for Cubs on Friday night. He always has some good stuff Cub and baseball related. I wonder how serious they are about Sheets.

The Cubs are serious about Sheets but just not at the price that Sheets and his agent are asking for. I believe Sheets won't sign until just before spring training starts which will deflate his value even more so. I believe Sheets can get a deal similar to Myers but he is asking way to much right now 10-12m a year for 2 years is just way to much. I could see maybe a 1-year deal for Sheets with a mutual option for a second year at $10-12m maybe.

I haven't seen or heard any rumors lately involving the Brewers so that may mean nothing is up or something is being worked on and they are just waiting on certain dominoes to fall first.
