Interest in Dave Roberts?

I could see you arguing that Roberts is no good, but to simply say he would only help for a year or two doesnt make any sense. Why not argue that signing a free agent to a 3 or 4 year deal is stupid because when the contract is up, then what...

By definition just about any short free agent signing is a band aid solution. Not sure what your point was about Roberts.

I like Roberts, but it would make more sense if he were RH, or if Gross, Nix, or Gwynn were RH. He has good OBP skills, and while SB totals are a waste of time, he has over 80% success, 84% if you disregard '05, when he was likely injured. He could well help Hall, Weeks, and others.

How in the World are stolen bases a waste of time?

Brewers in '06:

* Brady Clark singles

* No.2 hitter sacrifices

* Lee flies out (Clark to third)

* Jenks whiffs

No runs scored

With Roberts in '07

* Roberts singles

* He steals second

* No. 2 hitter moves him to third

* Prince's fly ball scores him

1-0 Brewers

That is ABC baseball. They call it that because it's elementary.

it's not the stolen bases that are the problem. it's the caught stealings that always go with those stolen bases that waste a perfectly good single.

with dave roberts though, he was 49/55 in stolen bases in 2006. if someone could somehow keep up that percentage then more people would be on board with a fast guy with little to no slugging, but that's pretty unrealistic (dave was only 23/35 in 2006, or a caught stealing about 1 out of every 3 tries)

but would i like dave roberts? absolutely, especially over brady clark or tony gwynn jr.

Dave Roberts would be an interesting choice for platoon guy (LF not CF) -- he generates good numbers vs. righties but is very weak vs. lefties.

3-year averages.

vs. RHP .282/.360/.412

vs. LHP .246/.310/.342

OF situation for the other half of a platoon:

Mench vs. LHP (last 3 yrs) .307/.379/.590

Clark vs. LHP (last 3 yrs) .280/.370/.402

Gross vs. LHP (last 3 yrs) small sample - .044 BA

I'm assuming that Hart goes nearly every day in RF while

Mench and Roberts would platoon in Left for one of the oddest two-headed-monsters seen in years.

The funny thing is, I said stolen base totals, not stolen bases. 67% is commonly referred to as the break-even point, and few guys are over 75%, so it hardly matters...but Roberts is.

Also, any team in which Roberts is the LF is simply awful offensively, unless you have Edmonds or Beltran (a CF who hits like a corner OF) in Cf.

That's why Roberts is a $2.2 million a year player -- he's a CF offensively and a defensive LF.

From Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com . . .

One GM with interest in free-agent outfielder Dave Roberts anticipates that the Brewers will make a strong push to sign Roberts to bat leadoff and play center field.

By signing Roberts or free-agent center fielder Juan Pierre, the Brewers further would increase their outfield depth, raising the possibility that Geoff Jenkins and/or Kevin Mench could be traded. Roberts, however, is in heavy demand; the Mets, Braves, Dodgers and White Sox are among the other teams interested.

Bill Hall, who impressed GM Doug Melvin with his outfield play during the major-league All-Star tour of Japan, is perhaps the Brewers' leading candidate to play left.

It's obvious that the team is turning things over to the kids they'd been waiting on. Hall and Hart can handle two OF spots, but I'm not in love with any of the current options for the third spot, so pursuing a veteran OF makes a lot of sense to me.

I would prefer to see a slugging OF, as opposed to a speedy CF type, I think Weeks can handle the leadoff spot, and I'm not sure we've got enough power in the lineup to absorb a no power guy in the OF.

Obviously, the team has already considered the personnel they have, and also the players who are available this winter, I think they're telling us there isn't a corner OF available to them, but they may have a shot at a leadoff guy out there, so Hall plays left, and they flat out count on improvement from their golden boys....Fielder, Hardy, Hart and Weeks are going to have to step up the way Bill Hall did. The plan was to win with these guys, they are here now, so put up or shut up.

It's not my favorite idea, I would prefer to see Hall remain in the infield, or at least play CF, but it may be the best option available too. I'm not thrilled with giving Roberts a third year on his deal, and if we land Pierre, I wouldn't bat him leadoff, I'd hit him second, but I trust Doug Melvin, if a little guy is the best available option, then he is.

With the exception of Ryan Braun, the hotshots are all here now, and all have their roles clearly defined, Bill Hall is a bonus, there's no way the team thought he'd be what he is now. It looks like the weight is going to be placed squarely on the shoulders of the kids the team has been waiting for, and with them, it's time to sink or swim.

I think most people think Weeks can handle the leadoff spot, but I don't think that's the best spot for him. Weeks has the ability to be a 30+ HR guy as well and when he was hitting leadoff last year he changed his approach abit. Eventually I see Weeks as the ideal #3 hitter.

If Hall and Hart are our corner outfielders I think that's plenty of power there and with the power from Weeks at 2nd that kind of makes up for the potential lack of power in Roberts.

I agree, Gone. Roberts may not be the perfect leadoff man, but how many teams really had that .300/.375/.425 guy? Roberts's career SB% is 80, and he swiped 49 while only getting caught 6 times in '06 (89%). He's got incredible range in CF, and is a veteran who won't need development at his position or the plate. He's 35 in 2007, so the fact that he has high demand, and Melvin worries that it may take a 3-yr deal to obtain his services. That's my only hangup. I don't want to have to worry about Roberts's $6 mil. number in 2009. Other than that, he'd be a nice addition
