Article on Brewers and FA Starting Pitching Options

Randy Wolf has a good career K rate. I guess he prefers the West Coast, otherwise, I'd be OK with a 2-3 year deal with him. The smart money is on Webb staying in AZ, either they pick up his option or do a one year reduced deal.
Webb has no intention on taking less money for next year. So if the D'backs don't pick up their option on Webb for next year the possibility of them bringing him back would be really low because they wouldn't be getting him back at a reduced rate. I don't think Webb could be an option for the Brewers though.

I would like to see the Brewers go after Harden, Lackey, Escobar, Sheets, Hudson, or Webb in the off season. Hudson more so than any of the other guys but Lackey wouldn't be a bad fit either. I have a feeling that Melvin is going to go hard after Lackey, Harden, or Pineiro. I really hope the Brewers do not end up with Pineiro though I just don't believe he will be as good as he was this year ever again. I would rather see Sheets or Harden pitching for Milwaukee than Pineiro.

I believe the Brewers will get 1 pitcher from a trade either that be a AA/AAA player or a player like Guthrie and 1 player from a free agency signing. I could see Hart and Hardy being traded along with a small chance that McGehee gets traded.

If Ben has to sign a one year deal for $1-2M, the Brewers may well end up with him. They will sign at least one of that type.

From TH's chat today.

He'll probably sign with somebody this winter if he's healthy. It won't be the Brewers. There were some hard feelings when he was allowed to become a free agent.

I agree with this, but I can't help but chuckle a little bit. It's important to have a good K rate for a pitcher, but you Ks don't matter for hitters? I don't want to take the thread in that direction so I'll put in my two cents...
Pretty sure his point is even if they are a good pitcher with a low K rate we already have enough of those types and in theory at least a more balanced staff would probably be better. So they aren't just seeing the same basic pitcher every day.
Pitchers with K rates of 7+/9ip tend to be more consistent and have longer careers. Suppan has had remarkable longevity given his career rate is 5K/9ip. I guess this is due to his good health. Anyway, a higher K rate tends to mean better command, higher velocity, better pitcher. Even if the career results don't reflect these advantages yet, it's more likely a high K pitcher will develop into a more successful pitcher.

I think Marquis' success is because he's a ground ball pitcher with an awesome defense behind him. In Milwaukee, with our defense, he'd be a below .500 pitcher for sure. Milwaukee has to do this on the cheap, so whoever gets lost in the shuffle, like Looper did, will be a Brewer starter next year. I'm guessing the biggest risk, so I think the Oakland guy.
