Jacque Jones for Jason Jennings rumor

I know this isn't relevant directly to the Crew, but the Cubs possibly adding Jennings doesn't exactly help us. I know the assessment of him on this site is about 50-50, but he could significantly help the Cubs (who could certainly afford to re-sign him)

Good updates from Rosenthal across the league

I agree. If Jennings is legitimately available, Jenks + Clark is a much, much better offer than Jones. Especially given that the Rockies have been reported as interested in Clark to fill their CF role.

A pitching rotation of Sheets, Cap, Jennings, Bush, and Vargas (CV & YoGa waiting in the wings) gets me all hot & bothered, I must say!

Rosenthal always seems like he's carrying somebody's water. For example he raves about how great a hitter Audrey Huff is quoting cherry picked stats (looking at Huff versus Chavez over 5 years. Huff is two years older, so yeah his 5 year average will look better) looks right from an agent press release. Huff's career numbers are:

.285/.342/.477/.819 which he basically matched last year. Not sure how that makes him an formidable offensive player.

Not to disagree with you for the sake of disagreeing, end (and not that I particularly care about Huff) -

2002 (the first year in Rosenthal's 5-year window) was Chavez's third full time season (4th overall) in MLB. Additionally, 2000 & 2001 yielded outstanding offensive production from Chavez, so I don't think Rosenthal is nit-picking.

Chavez hit

2000 - .277/.355/.495/.850 (89 runs, 26 HRs, 86 RBI)

2001 - .288/.338/.540/.878 (91 runs, 32 HRs, 114 RBI)

I think, in this instance, Rosenthal is being very fair

I'd definitely prefer Jennings to Vargas, and I want one more starting pitcher, depth is good. Jennings can walk in a year, that may hold the offers down a little, if we could do something with Jenkins, or maybe Jenkins and Clark for Jennings and another body....why not?

Maybe we'd end up with a platoon of Gross and Mench in left, I know some of you want to see Mench traded to Mars, but that might work out ok.

Right, end. My point is in response to your

Your criticism is (please clarify if this is not what you meant) that, since Huff is older, he will have better numbers over a 5 year period that assumedly included years in which Chavez was not at peak performance.

I included 2000 & 2001 to show that, although younger, Chavez was already at prime performance

One other thing on Jennings, this is a former #1 pick who will walk out of Denver at age 28, if he isn't dealt this winter.

This is why you don't rush prospects, if he was truly ready, and was truly needed when he came up, that's just the way it goes, but they seem to be nearing the end of the line with him, and he's well short of 30.

My point was Chavez and Huff shouldn't be mentioned together. And Huff had his age 29 and 30 season which should be prime years while Chavez hasn't. Chavez is a career 839 OPS hitter and Huff 819. But by eliminating 2000 and 2001 you also drop two of Huff's bad years and two of Chavez's good years.

My point is that 5 years is less than a career but not short enough to say that the player has changed. Its an agent talking point. Rosenthal just dropped it into a column.

Well, he was rookie of the year, so I'd say he was probably ready to play in the bigs, not rushed

Yes, I remembered the 16 wins in his first year, this probably wasn't the best example for my point. What I'm really saying is, he slipped after his first year, then looked much better last year. I think the Rockies got caught a little, he wasn't pitching like a guy you'd lock up, then he cut his ERA a bunch, whether that's humidor or talent, now he looks like a guy they should keep around, but now he won't sign an extension, so off he goes.

Maybe the Rockies will make a good deal for themselves, but it kind of looks like they're getting hung out to dry a little on this one. Two decent seasons from a top pick, if he's coming into his own, someone else gets his best years.

The Cubs would finally be making a good move.

I understand how the humidor makes Coors look more like a pitchers park. But a curve ball doesn't curve there, even if the ball is humid.

I think Jennings would be a good pick up for anyone, including us.

End - thanks for clarifying http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

add-on -- perhaps it's just me, but a difference of .020 in OPS seems small, not pickin' a fight though. So the theory is that, since Chavez has yet to hit his theoretically best years, that gap in OPS is only going to get greater, esp. as Huff declines (?)
