Fall Instructional League

I think we've had the information just once all these many years. Will try to hunt something down for you.

Don't read too much into it, some top players, like Logan Schafer, aren't there, so it's not necessarily the Brewers "Top 45" list -- it is a list of those who they have higher hopes for, but just because a player is not there, doesn't mean they may never get their cup of coffee (or more) in the majors.

Instructional league schedules and rosters typically aren't published. You can get them through the organization's minor league complex, but you'll have to post them online if they grant permission (no reason why they wouldn't).

Some organizations don't run instructs. The current issue of Baseball America has an article about the Cardinals and Mets not having instructs. The Mets will send their kids to the Dominican academy to combine with winter ball. The Cardinals simply decided not to do the instructs; their assistant GM said it was because minor leaguers don't want to go to instructs, which seems pretty weak to me.

Cool to see Kentrail Davis, D'Vontrey Richardson, and Scooter Gennett making their unofficial Brewers debuts; still no Brooks Hall though. Also, notice that Corey Kemp is listed as an infielder.

Adam McCalvy:

General manager Doug Melvin and assistant GM Gord Ash will travel to Phoenix on Monday to see the Brewers' instructional league squad. It will be their first look at many of the team's 2009 First-Year Player Draft picks, including three players -- Kentrail Davis, Scooter Gennett and D'Vontrey Richardson -- who did not sign in time to play for a regular-season affiliate. ... One high-profile '09 Draft pick, right-hander Brooks Hall, is not participating in the fall instructional league because of a non-baseball-related medical issue, Ash said. He couldn't expound on that because of privacy laws.

Bill Mitchell has some updates from instructs on three prominent Brewers pitchers:

Kyle Heckathorn pitched three innings for #Brewers Instructs today --- reports had him at 92-93 but straight FB. 2 shaky innings, 1 solid.
Eric Arnett, #Brewers 1st round, pitches 4 innings in first Instructs game. 92 FB, 3 decent pitches. Gave up 4 runs but not all his fault.
Jake Odorizzi ( #Brewers) effective in the 1 inning I saw today - 93 FB, 4 good pitches. 2010 breakout candidate, perhaps?

Adam McCalvy:

GM Doug Melvin re-joined the team after a few days with the team's instructional league squad and spoke highly of D'Vontrey Richardson and Kentrail Davis, outfielders selected in the First-Year Player Draft earlier this season. Richardson in particular has flashed impressive power, said Melvin, who said the Florida State product could be a Reggie Sanders-type player down the road
