Stockpiling players for a move?

However, I think the Twins might, and in the $60 million challenge thread I suggested a Hall to Minnesota deal for a prospect package, highlighted by two of their three top pitching prospects (Matt Garza, Glen Perkins & Kevin Slowey).

If we trade Hall for pitching prospects, wouldn't that make our already poor offense worse in 2007? And why would the Twins want to trade their best pitching prospects for Hall? The Twins are currently short of starting pitching and are dipping into the farm, Garza and Perkins are already with the big league club.

I seriously doubt the Twins will trade their best young (and very cheap) pitchers for Hall this offseason.

Matt Holiday

For comparison:

Matt Holiday's 2006 Stats:

.326/.387/.586 OPS of .973

Bill Hall's 2006 Stats:

.270/.345/.553 OPS of .899

Also for comparison. Holliday away from Coors.

.280/.333/.485/.818 There's no way in hell Holliday is worth Hall and you want to add Jenkins and Miller?

I dont see the twins trading for hall at ss with bartlett beinning to show he has skills, and if im the rockies id keep holiday and see what i have in tulowitski(sp?) at ss. Boston I could see drooling over the chance at getting hall, but I dont think WMP is enough of a return. If the blue jays would have traded for hall, it probably would have happened before they signed royce clayton. plus like i said in another thread, I doubt wells would sign an extension with the crew. at this point i think id rather have hall than crawford so that doesnt work. I just dont know.

Perhaps the white sox could be called. I would consider jenkins, hall, and koskie for brian anderson, joe crede, and freddy garcia. Its not exactly quantity for quality, but it would help the sox's offense and allow them to move mccarthy to the rotation, while giving us the SP we wanted. Then we make a quantity move with vargas/villanueva, clark, turnbow, and mench to get a bullpen arm and a solid LF, perhaps the royals for emil brown and joel peralta.

Lineup:

1b fielder

2b weeks

ss hardy

3b crede

lf brown

cf anderson

rf hart

Rotation:

sheets

capuano

garcia

bush

whoever not traded between vargas/villanueva

and a solid bullpen

obviously we would need brian anderson to realize a bit of his potential for this to work out, but its not bad.

Now if we can make the same deals as above but keep hall and instead make it hardy and a solid prospect or maybe zach jackson That makes everyting better but i dont think they do it.

I'm late to the thread, but here goes:

I don't think players are necessarily being stockpiled to move. What I love about Melvin & Co. is that we all learned in 2006 that there is always a possibility, however small, that many, or even all of your key players can be lost to injury.

If players are being compiled to swing a deal, cool. I have total trust in Melvin & Co. I would be surprised if this is the case, since the players we're adding are not eligible for free agency for years. This is such a simple, yet brilliant strategy. Our star players, our "big bat"s that are constantly discussed, are already here -- Prince, Bill, Braun, Rickie. We, as fans, just have to realize that we need to be patient.

I know this is frustrating to some, but this strategy is what the Brewers have to follow in order to be continually competitive. We are entering the 3d year of new ownership, and a true commitment to building a consistent winner. A good, strong house is not built in one day. Although it may be harder work to do a job right, the rewards far outweigh the relatively miniscule patience involved for us.

I know many will argue "I've been waiting my whole life for a winner! I'm tired of waiting!" etc, etc. (see the thread 'Does this team owe you a winner?') Well, we have been waiting. Now, the first step is here -- ownership with a true plan for winning. We're in the second phase now, with our well-drafted talent finally ready to go (with MUCH more help on the way - mostly pitching). Relax, everyone, the sky is not falling!

You're right. I thought with the humidor that Coors would have become more of an average offensive ballpark, but a look at ESPN for park factors shows its still #2 in the MLB behind Great American Ballpark. So what exactly is this whole fuss about the humidor all about again?

Ok that trims down what I feel would be a fair return for Hall even more. Vlad Guererro, Jason Bay and Manny Rameriez are the only three OF I would trade Hall for.

Bay would make the most sense of those three, I think. Since he has an OPS of 900+ on the road and at home. He has an OPS of 900+ against both righties and lefties. And finally he's mashed at Milller Park to an OPS of 1.491 (in a relatively small sample).

Hall + Jenkins for Bay should be fair enough, with a possible prospect being added on one side or the other.

I really like the idea of getting some sort of top of the rotation SP or near ready prospect. They way the NL Central is starting to look with the addition of offense, I think I'd rather have the dominant pitchers and scratch and claw out runs. That said, I like the idea of Peavey a lot. But a really good starting pitcher is what I think we need.

"Bill Hall, Geoff Jenkins, Damien Miller

for

Matt Holiday"

Before giving up our top player, one who's really versatile, young-ish, fast and inexpensive, I'd like to see if Matt can hit outside Coors. Hall alone > Holliday. In fact, if we gave Colorado Hall and added, let's say, Zach Jackson, we could get Holliday AND Tulowitzki.

"Another player I would move Hall for is Jake Peavy"

Not me! Hall's value is at its apex, about now, while Peavy's is at its lowest. If Hall goes to SD, we get Peavy AND a decent slugger, although the Padres don't really look like they have even 1 to spare.

If I deal Hall, it's to get a major OF bat back, because without him, our offense, which is already bad, falls to Royals territory.

"Hall will be the guy traded this winter. I have no doubt.

So we trade our best player, again?"

Because the Brewers NEVER trade away their best slugger, right? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif

There is no way we don't make a quantity for quality trade here before Spring Training, right?

I used to think that way, but it turns out most GM's are smart and they won't give up a quality player for multiple average players.

Miller and Jenkins for Buehrle or Miller and Mench for Freddy Garcia

I doubt either of your offers would be acceptable to the White Sox. Garcia is solid. Buehrle would instantly be our 2nd best pitcher. I think it would take a lot more than Miller and Jenkins to land him, although I'm not familiar with their specific needs.

http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/mad.gif why is everyone set on trading hall? he is the future of the crew. what other player can play 3b,ss,2b,of and still be able to hit. Not only that his defense has improved, he adds alot of energy on the fielder. some like to call people like him a gamer. this is why he is so valuable.

lets say somebody gets hurt (hardy in 2006), (branyan/helms duo in 2005). hall is going to be the guy to fill in at ss, 3b, 2b, outfield. this way our offense can try to stay afloat while these injured players recover.

plus he is underpaid for what his past 2 seasons were. the brewers aren't going to turn into the yankees and trade away prospects for names. they have a budget.

so please, stop "drooling" over players hall can bring in when you should be "drooling" over hall.
