Baseball this morning on XM

Was listening to baseball this morning on xm, and Buck Martinez stated that he talked to Gord Ash recently and he stated that his starting outfield as of now is Mench, Hall, and Hart. I wouldn't be surprised than if Jenkins is gone by Thursday. I have no idea how Mench has earned the rite for an every day job, but it seems that the way they are going to go

I can see the logic there, but it had better be a gorss/mench platoon at the least...the total production from mench/hall/hart in 2007 will probably be very similar to the total production of lee/jenkins/clark/mench/gross/hart last year, so this doesn't make the team better in the slightest

What does this team see in Mench that I don't? He is a defensive liability, and he didn't hit a lick for the team in 2 months last year (yeah, I know, small sample). Texas gave up on him as well. I think the best cast scenario is that he comes close to matching Jenkins' carreer averages with the bat, and is his usual butcher in left field. I'd say there is an 90% chance Jenkins would out perform him offensively, and he is light years ahead defensively. This guy is basically a right handed Kevin Reimer.

Trade Mench. If there are no takers, DFA him. He is not worth what they will have to pay him next year, it's as simple as that.

Don't keep him just to justify the trade.

Wow, now it's not the manager or even the general manager who is filling out the lineup card, it's the assistant GM.

Maybe by opening day, it will be the fans (ala the Schaumburg Flyers) picking out the starting lineups.

Good thing there are no games this month.

You don't think it's possible all three have discussed this and this is possibly a consensus they came too? Or at least what they've decided to state publicly? Seems like a bit of a stretch to make the assumption from that quote that Gord's calling the shots by himself and to respond that passionately...

i agree while it may be logical to say that if we trade jenks and clark, mench would atleast platoon in left, i am sure that is an orgnaizational decision and not Gord's mullings to Martinez. That channel has been awesome today though with all the baseball coverage.

I wouldn't cry too much if Villy was traded away, at least not if he's the centerpiece to getting a different leadoff hitter in Milwaukee. oh no, we'd lose a potential #4 starter! boo-hoo (okay, maybe that's a tad harsh).

I gagged a little bit at that "Mench in left field" quote. Probably has more to do with trading him, though, actually trying to convince other GM's that he's worthy of starting.

Ash: "well, I guess we could trade you Mench, although it'll be tough to lose our starting left fielder."

GM: "really? he's going to start for you?"

Ash: "oh, totally. Fans are barely going to notice Carlos Lee is gone now that we've got Kevin Mench."

GM: "wow, I had no idea. Do you have his stats on hand to show me?"

Ash: "stats? uh, um, they're gone."

GM: "what? gone?"

Ash: "uh, yeah. big fire. all the stats burned up. just take my word for it."

I'm a big CVill backer. I like the idea that he knows how to pitch at such a young age. Not as much of an injury risk as young flamethrowers.

Do the DRays need an outfielder if they trade Baldelli? Maybe they would take Mench as part of the deal.

Mench, Capellan, Aquino, Rogers may get it done without losing Villanueva.

Since that blurb indicates Mench is a starter "as of now", I take that to mean if we don't make any other acquisitions. That does not indicate in any way that we aren't targeting an outfielder that's outside the organization to take that spot from him.

The surprising thing about that is that they feel Mench is the starter, "as of now", over Jenkins. Either they're so close to trading Jenkins that they don't even consider him an option or they actually think (or want other teams to think...?) Mench will out-produce Jenkins this upcoming year.

At this point, I don't think either player will be with the team come April, so maybe this is just posturing to up Mench's value since it appears that Jenkins' has been drawing more interest thus far and they had to throw someone's name in there as a starter.

Who was responding passionately? I was poking fun at the thought of Gord Ash filling out the lineup card everyday.

Geesh.

I may have taken your post more seriously than you intended... it just sounded like you were upset/disturbed that Gord Ash would have an answer to who the current starters in the outfield are.

So, you think Melvin gives Yost 25 guys and Yost takes it from there? That Russell Branyan seemed to show that, in the end, Melvin is Yost's boss and has the final say. Frankly, that's the way it should be. Yost might decide who's in the starting lineup on a day to day basis but melvin decides who's the starters.
