Marlon Byrd anyone?

One of the primary arguments made for bringing back Cameron is the lack of alternatives in CF. Byrd will be a FA and might be a guy worth pursuing if the price is right. Sure, he's not a world beater and like all Texas numbers, they have to be measured a bit, but he's a solid major league OF. Heck, even if they did bring back Cameron, a guy like Byrd would certainly allow them to deal Hart.

I think Byrd is a decent option, but center fielders tend to be overpriced in the free agent market. If he would come relatively affordable, I think he's worth a look. I know I'm in the minority here, but I still think that Gerut is a viable option as well. He is arbitration eligible, correct/

I'm not anti-Gerut by any means. I think one reason I like Byrd is that Hart matches up with some teams that have pitching to deal that Hardy doesn't and it would give Melvin more options in dealing for pitching or that overlooked need, catching. If they added a Byrd, they wouldn't be forced to keep Hart if they let Cameron go.

I think an OF of Braun, Gerut and Byrd might be pretty decent as both Gerut and Byrd could play CF. Gerut as a 4th OF is a nice option too.

I like Gerut and Ankiel if Cameron wants more than a 1y/$5M deal, as both will be cheap and both will be near league average (though both would require a platoon partner). Nothing against Byrd, but he's be 32, has road splits of .320/.400, and hardly ever walks. He seems more like a 4th OF outside of Arlington, and I think he'll be paid far more than he's worth.

I like Byrd, and have had interest in him in the past. But signing a Byrd after he's had the good numbers in Arlington is much less attractive a proposition than finding a guy like him who hasn't had the opportunity and is still cheap. Of course finding the cheap guy is harder...but signing Byrd now just seems a bit like signing Sarge Jr...a player with some value but who is probably going to be overpaid going forward.
