How about Bonds for left field.

yoshii8

Ten years ago, the Oakland A's traded Mark McGwire to St. Louis for immortals T.J. Mathews, Eric Ludwick, and Blake Stein.

Now that was an opportunity I thought at the time the Brewers really missed the boat on to get that big slugger.

Bonds now? He can't move more than 10 steps in any direction. It would cost every starting pitcher a half a run on his ERA.

It makes me want to cry that this topic is even being seriously discussed.

Well, now you know how I feel when I see Juan Pierre, Dave Roberts, Kenny Lofton, Steve Finley, Chone Figgins, etc. discussed as possible Brewers. At least Bonds is a good player. And, his defense looks like league average according to pretty much every model that looks at D. There's no way he's worse than Dunn, Lee, Ramirez, etc.

Ya i would be shattered if the Crew signed Bonds. Not only is he a cheater with steroids and should be kicked out of the leauge, but he is a jerk and is terrible on defense. Before i couldn't imagine having trouble rooting for a Brewers player, but with Bonds i would not support him at all.

Is Bonds really _that_ bad on defense? I mean, I know his wheels are "bad", but it seems like every time I saw him on TV last year, he was still making the routine plays and stuff. I understand he won't be climbing any outfield fences or anything, but are his D stats that bad?

I doubt the Crew would ever consider it. The club still has a nice relationship with Hank Aaron, and all things considered, his bat probably doesn't offset his inability to run, play defense or be a positive influence in the clubhouse.

But, man, he'd look nice batting third or fourth.

No, they aren't. Even PMR, which looks at range, has him as a league average LF:

One surprise to me is Barry Bonds. With his reconstructed knees, I expected Bonds to be at the bottom of the rankings. But he about as average as you'd like. The model predicted he'd turn 187 balls into outs, and he got to 188. This actually confirms what I saw last season. He moved surprising well in left field.

Well, he's had one year (or one and a half) when he got hurt. He played through the pain last year - because he's a gutsy, gritty, hard-nosed player who wants to win (or are mediocre white guys the only one's who can get that tag?).

The K haters would like him - he has almost 1000 more BB than K's.

He'd be worth that $10 million if he played 120 games.
