Food misconceptions and how they got resolved

InsomniacInkRoss

I am almost embarrassed by this having worked in a produce department for 3+ years.

As a kid I did not like maraschino cherries, still don't for that matter, but I thought all red cherries were maraschino, like it was a species or variety of cherry. Working in produce I developed a fondness for Queen Ann and Rainer cherries, but would not eat a red (Bing) cherry. It took a tv show I saw to tell me that you have to "make" maraschino cherries. I now sit here typing this, enjoying fresh and tasty red Bing cherries.

Every now and again I will buy a jar of maraschino cherries, pour out the syrup, replace it with Maker's Mark and put it in the fridge for 6 months or so. Good to eat and drink whats inside of there, mmmmmm.

cherries are one of the healthiest fruits that you can eat, or so I've heard. I love 'em.

Of course, if you pour whiskey over them and let them sit for several months in the fridge, one might beg to differ.

I do the same thing with Whisky and Peaches. I mix peaches, some peach nectar, and whisky in a small mason jar, let it sit for a few months, and YUM. Get a good buzz just off the peaches, and the "juice" left over is awesome.

Growing up, the dark red cherries were always known as "Bing". Now in the stores, I often see them labeled as "Sweet" or "Red" Cherries. Are they using another variety other than the classic Bing? Why the name change?

And I love cherries. Does anyone know if they grow well in SE Wisconsin? I would like to get a couple of trees once we move back for good.

Also, while I love cherries, I strongly dislike cherry flavored hard candy (Lifesavers, etc.). That stuff doesn't at all taste like cherries. Nor did Cherry flavored drinks. . .Kool Aid, soda, etc.

And as a small child, I was a little concerned about eating Wild Cherry lifesavers, as I didn't want people to think I was wild.

Growing up in SE WI, my parents had 2 cherry trees. One did really well (a sour variety), but the sweet one didn't do much. The trees also didn't live real long. The big problem, though, was getting the cherries before the birds.

That is awesome. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

At the risk of taking this thread too far off-topic, JimH5's childhood memory reminds me of when I was a kid, used to see a traffic sign in Janesville that said something like "Traffic from Right Does Not Stop," and I clearly remember marveling at the thought that there must always be traffic at that intersection, coming from the right, even at 3:00 AM.

Eventually, I figured out what the sign really meant.

Off topic, but related to Hawing's comment. I was raised Protestant. When ever I saw a sign for pedestrian crossing, I thought it was just for my church - probably until I was about 10 years old.

As far as food goes - who knew tomatoes and mushrooms are actually delicious?

It's really amazing how much better (and different) a garden grown tomato tastes from a store bought tomato. I was lucky enough to have a father that was huge into gardening and I can't tell you how disappointed I was when I got to college and bought tomatoes at the grocery store for the first time.

Of all fruit to candy transitions, "banana" flavored things have to be the worse. Cherry doesn't taste like cherry, but I like it ok.

I love tomatoes now, but haven't come around on mushrooms yet, but I seem to only have nasty run of the mill mushrooms. I should really explore portabellas and such.

There are hundreds of tomato varieties, and store bought ones tend to be pretty lacking. I love just splitting roma tomatoes and sprinkling with parmesan or romano cheese for a snack.

Give me basically any grilled veggie aside from eggplant & I'm a happy camper. Mushrooms are so delicious. I am especially fond of almost any way to prepare/cook an onion (red being my favorite variety). As a kid, any veggie aside from carrots & lettuce basically grossed me out.
