How about that full-season race Nashville is in, huh?

It is not easy to miss the Pioneer League playoffs (where half the eight teams qualify every season) two years in a row, but Helena is doing its best to do just that, despite a putrid division.

Final: Kane County 5, Wisconsin 1

Cougars quiet Rattlers

Chris Mehring/TimberRattlers.com

GENEVA, IL - Three Kane County Cougars pitchers held the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to three hits in a 5-1 victory Saturday night at Elfstrom Stadium. Mathieu Leblanc-Poirier got the win as he allowed an unearned run and a hit over six innings.

Wisconsin and Kane County traded runs in the first inning. The Rattlers (57-74 overall, 23-38 second half) took advantage of some careless fielding by the Cougars to score their run. Brock Kjeldgaard reached on an error with two outs. A wild pitch and a throwing error allowed Kjeldgaard to take third base. Then, an error on a grounder off the bat of John Delaney let Kjeldgaard score.

Kane County (71-61, 30-32) immediately struck back. Conner Crumbliss started the bottom of the first with a triple. He scored on a wild pitch by Rattlers starting pitcher Cody Scarpetta.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Cougars took the lead. Jeremy Barfield doubled to lead off the inning. Petey Paramore was next and he doubled to drive in Barfield for a 2-1 lead.

Kane County added to their lead in the seventh. They loaded the bases with one out against reliever Pedro Lambertus. The Rattlers reliever got the second out of the inning on a popup. But, he walked Barfield on a 3-1 pitch to force in a run. Liam Ohlmann relieved Lambertus and got out of the inning without further damage.

The Cougars scored two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Corey Frerichs walked a pair of batters with one out. Then, Leonardo Gil singled in a run. A sacrifice fly by Steve Parker pushed the final run of the game across the plate.

Erik Miller had an infield single in the third inning for Wisconsin's only hit off Leblanc-Poirier. Pete Fatse singled in the seventh and Josh Prince singled in the eighth for the other Rattlers hits.

Wisconsin box score

Another offensive explosion! In addition to his hit, Fatse walked twice; with Derrick Alfonso's walk and Kjeldgaard's HBP added in, that's seven Rattlers on base all game, and they still managed to hit into three double plays. Scarpetta's line is pretty blah.

Final: Brevard County 9, Tampa 2

Brevard County Box Score

Logan Schafer and Eric Farris continue to swing the bat well, each with a pair of hits. Both of Farris' were doubles, and we swipes his 63rd bag of the year. Steffan Wilson with a two-run shot in the 'Tees six-run second inning. Alex Periard and Lucas Luetge combine on a pretty good effort, as Luetge was "on" today in the middle of an on again, off again season.

Brevard County Game Log

The six run sixth inning included a lot of wildness from the opposing pitcher, who struck out the side before a single run had crossed home plate:

Brevard County Top 2nd

Final: Nashville 5, Round Rock 4

Nashville box score

It was the Hernan Iribarren show tonight; the Hurricane had a double in the 3rd and hit a grand slam in the Sounds' five-run 4th. Mat Gamel was 1-4 with three strikeouts and a fielding error, and J.J. Hardy was 0-4. John Axford struck out looking in his first professional plate appearance, but we'll forgive him since he performed well on the other side of the box score, striking out two in his two innings and not allowing a run for the first time in five outings.

Nashville play-by-play

Nashville Top 4th

Final: Birmingham 7, Huntsville 6

Huntsville Comeback Goes For Naught in Ninth Inning Loss

Brett Pollock/HuntsvilleStars.com

David Cook singled in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Birmingham to a 7-6 win over Huntsville Saturday night in the second of a five-game set at Regions Park. The Barons stopped a four-game slide and lifted their record to 37-25 in the second half and 85-46 overall, while the Stars four-game win streak was snapped, as they fell to 25-35 in the second half and 63-67 overall. The Barons have taken eight out of 12 from the Stars, including six of eight in Birmingham.

Mike McClendon tossed 3 1/3 scoreless innings behind Stars' starterJosh Butler and gave way in the ninth to Wes Littleton, who walked the leadoff man Robbie Hudson. Jordan Danks dropped down a sacrifice bunt before CJ Retherford fanned for the second out. The Stars intentionally walked the lefty-swinging Christian Marrero to get to Cook, who cracked a ground ball past a diving Shane Justis at third base into left field to deliver Hudson with the decisive run. It was Cook's league-leading 82nd RBI of the season.

Ricky Brooks followed Barons' starter Matt Long and kept the Stars scoreless through an inning and a third and turned over a 6-4 edge heading into the eighth inning to Clevelan Santeliz, who gave up a run-scoring double to Chuck Caufield that trimmed the Barons' lead to 6-5. The right-hander then gave up the tying run in the ninth when Justis led off with a double, moved to third base on a ground ball out and came in to score, after a collision at the plate, on a Jonathan Lucroy sacrifice fly. The tying run was only the fifth earned run allowed by Santeliz in 52 innings of work. Santeliz was tossed from the game after the inning was over but wound up picking up his fourth win of the season.

Jared Price doubled with one out in the third, the first hit for either side, moved to third base on a Butler wild pitch and scored on a Hudson ground out to give the Barons a 1-0 lead. Long held the Stars hitless until Drew Anderson doubled with one out in the fourth. Taylor Green singled with two outs into right field from where Marrero made a one-hop throw to cut Anderson down at the plate to keep the Barons in front.

The Barons collected only one hit in a five-run fifth, a run-scoring single by Danks, and took advantage of three errors, three walks and catcher's interference to move out to a 6-0 lead. A Butler throwing error on a bunt attempt by Price allowed a run to score, another Butler wild pitch chased in a run, a run-scoring ground out by Dayan Viciedo brought in another run, as did an error by Lorenzo Cain after he overran the base hit by Danks. Butler was lifted after 4 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits.

The Stars climbed right back into the game with four runs in the sixth. Green drove in the first run with a base hit before JR Hopf's scoring fly ball cut the lead to 6-2. Caufield's two-out, run-scoring hit made it 6-3 and knocked Long out of the game. Brooks took over and gave up a run-scoring hit to Michael Garciaparra that completed the rally. Long, who had allowed only two runs over 25 innings in his prior four outings, was charged with four runs on seven hits, while walking three and striking out three.

Huntsville box score

Lucroy's new hitting streak ended at four games, but he did walk and knocked in the tying run in the top of the 9th on a sac fly before Littleton gave up the go-ahead run in the bottom half. Green was 2-5, Cain 1-3 with a walk, and Brett Lawrie an ugly 0-5 with four K's. Butler did not have a great outing, giving up six runs (three earned) in 4.2 innings, striking out four against three hits and three walks (one intentional), plus a hit batter and two wild pitches. He was doing fine, though, until the 5th, when a catcher's interference by Hopf and his own throwing error set the table for the Barons. At least Butler's sinker was working, judging by his 8/2 GO/AO.

Huntsville play-by-play

The fateful 5th:

Birmingham Bottom 5th

  • Javier Colina walks.
  • Lee Cruz reaches on catcher interference by J. R. Hopf. Javier Colina to 2nd. Lee Cruz to 1st.
  • Jared Price reaches on force attempt, throwing error by pitcher Josh Butler. Javier Colina scores. Lee Cruz to 3rd.
  • Robert Hudson walks. Jared Price to 2nd.
  • Coaching visit to mound.
  • Jordan Danks singles on a ground ball to center fielder Lorenzo Cain. Lee Cruz scores. Jared Price scores. Robert Hudson to 2nd. Fielding error by center fielder Lorenzo Cain.

Final: Great Falls 6, Helena 0

Helena box score

The H-Crew had three baserunners all night and didn't get one past first base (though Sean Halton did his damnedest, getting thrown out stretching his leadoff single in the 5th). That clears the way for us to talk about Jake Odorizzi; despite taking the loss after allowing two runs on six hits in 4.2 innings, Odorizzi finally flashed some strikeout sexiness while maintaining his precocious control, punching out eight Voyagers and walking none. On the season now, he's got a 33/6 K/BB in 40.1 innings, with 41 hits allowed. Obviously, we'd like to see some more signs of dominance, but compared to his 2008 classmastes Evan Frederickson and Seth Lintz, you've got to love the lack of walks.

Final: AZL Athletics 3, AZL Brewers 2

AZL Brewers box score

I guess Seth Lintz got the message from Jake Odorizzi earlier tonight; he struck out three and walked none in his 2.2 innings of work, though he did give up three hits, two of which came in the bottom of the 9th and led to the walk-off loss. Not much going on for the Brewers offensively besides Brandon Sizemore's 7th homer; as college sluggers, he and Khris Davis stick out like sore thumbs in this lineup. Max Walla went 0-4 with two K's to drop his average to .199. Chris Dennis hasn't played since the 23rd.

AZL Brewers play-by-play

AZL Athletics Bottom 9th

  • Alcibiades Made singles on a ground ball to shortstop Carlos George.
  • Abraham De Leon out on a sacrifice bunt to first baseman Brandon Sizemore. Alcibiades Made to 2nd.
  • Joel Eusebio pops out to shortstop Carlos George in foul territory.
  • Gernaldo Castillo doubles (7) on a fly ball to center fielder Franklin Romero. Alcibiades Made scores.

Nashville edges Round Rock with slam

RoundRockExpress.com

ROUND ROCK - Nashville (70-65) had one more big hit than Round Rock (58-77) Saturday night at Dell Diamond, and it was the difference in a 5-4 loss for the Express.

Reggie Abercrombie led the Express with three hits, including a home run from Abercrombie.

Abercrombie jump-started Round Rock in the bottom of the first inning with the solo home run to left field on a 2-1 pitch from Sounds starter Chase Wright.

Corey Patterson started the Nashville rally in the fourth inning with a triple to right-center field. Joe Koshansky kept it going with a single to right-center field, scoring Patterson to tie the game. Mat Gamel and Tike Redman followed with singles of their own to load the bases, and Hernan Iribarren struck the biggest blow of the night when he hit a grand slam to right field on a 1-2 pitch from Express starter Jose Capellan.

But the Express rallied.

In the bottom of the inning, John Gall led off with a double to left field. Kata singled to left field to put runners at first and third, and Jason Smith loaded the bases with a walk. After Brian Esposito struck out, J.R. Towles came through with a pinch-hit single that scored Gall and pulled Round Rock within three. Abercrombie came through again with a single of his own that scored Kata and Smith to make it 5-4.

Round Rock had one more crack at a comeback in the eighth inning, loading the bases with one out before Yordany Ramirez flew out to first base, and Brian Bogusevic grounded out to first base to end the rally.

Voyagers blank Brewers

Amber Kuehn/The Independent Record

The Helena Brewers didn't have an answer for Great Falls ace Matt Wickswat.

Or the rest of the Voyagers pitching staff for that matter.

Great Falls (10-14) turned in its most well rounded effort of the season Saturday, using near-perfect pitching, solid fielding and strong hitting to beat the Brewers 6-0 in a Pioneer League game front of 913 fans at Kindrick Field.

It was the first time the Voyagers have won back-to-back games in more than two weeks, as Great Falls swept the two-game series. The two teams will meet again today in Great Falls.

Helena (7-17) had a relatively clean game, registering just one error, and two double plays highlighted a phenomenal fielding effort.

Jake Odorizzi had his strongest start since coming back from an elbow injury. But all of that was overshadowed by the arm of the southpaw Wickswat, who allowed just three Helena hits.

"That Wickswat, he's kind of stuck it to us a couple times," Brewers manager Rene Gonzales said. "We can't seem to get anything off of him. I think we're going to have a different approach the next time we do see him, hopefully try to bunt on him, get him off the mound."

Wickswat picked up his second win of the season, throwing six stellar shutout innings with seven strikeouts and showing excellent command of his changeup and fastball.

"He baffles us, that's for sure," Gonzales said. "His numbers were good and we can't seem to get a read on him."

The middle of the Brewers lineup saw the only offense. The only players with hits were Sean Halton, Cameron Garfield and Cutter Dykstra, whose father, former major leaguer Lenny Dykstra, was in the stands watching from behind home plate.

What started out as a pitcher's duel turned into a Great Falls slugging contest, as the Voyagers scored three runs in the seventh off Helena reliever Andre Lamontagne, with singles, a double and a triple. Great Falls finished with 13 hits.

Todd Gossage, son of former major leaguer Goose Gossage, was 1-for-4 with a sacrifice RBI. Jesus Avila and Nick Ciolli paced the Voyagers at the plate, going 3-for-5 and scoring the first two runs of the game in the top of the fourth.

Odorizzi took the loss, hurling 4 2/3 innings and giving up six hits, two earned runs and striking out eight.

"It's safe to say Odorizzi is back," Gonzales said, adding he was also pleased with reliever Ben Jeffers, who has a 14.54 ERA when facing Great Falls. Jeffers gave up a base hit but helped to strand a runner on third.

Voyagers reliever Jake Wilson, who kept the Brewers from getting comfortable with a slick sidearm, fanned three in two innings and kept the Brewers from scoring.

"We just didn't have it tonight," Gonzales said.

Lintz is starting to come around - in his last five outings he has 5 BB, 15 K, 11 H, and 4 ER in 12.2 IP. Dykstra hitting over .400 in his last 9 games. Nothing to get real excited about yet, but moving in the right direction.
