IF we landed Schmidt, I don't know if I'd trade for Lieber.

Sheets, Schmidt, Cappy, Bush, Vargas is pretty good.

Then we could sweeten the pot with Tampa. Maybe go Villanueva, Aquino, Mench, Capellan + a prospect and get Crawford instead!!!

Weeks

Crawford/Baldelli

Estrada

Fielder

Hall

Hart

Koskie

Hardy

Wow, that's solid.

I highly doubt Schmidt is going to sign with Milwaukee, however the rumor came from Jon Heyman of cnnsi.com,

Dodgers may turn to Schmidt; Brewers, too

"The Mariners and Dodgers have been viewed as co-favorites for Schmidt, who already has turned away the Yankees and is thought to want to remain on the West Coast. The Padres had looked into Schmidt but are probably out of that derby assuming they finalize a Maddux deal. The Cubs, who are also chasing Ted Lilly, also have shown interest.

But the real surprise team in the Schmidt derby is the Brewers. A person familiar with the talks told SI.com that Milwaukee inquired about Schmidt's willingness to come there and hasn't been told no yet so it may also make an offer. The Schmidt sweepstakes is not expected to drag on too much longer.

Interestingly, the Giants, who have money to spend, don't appear to be as aggressively pursuing Schmidt as the others."

Let's just say the crew some way pulls it out and signs schmidt, do we then in turn have to give up draft picks because SF offered him arbitration?

Maybe this was all part of Doug's master plan with the Graffy move? Sign counsell, offer Graffy arby knowing full well he's going else where, get the picks, sign schmidt and give them our picks. Thus making it a wash. Hmmmmm

although Weirdos, theoretically we could deal Mench for Lieber, Jenkins for something, and then swap Vargas and ???? for Baldelli. I'd consider Lieber or Benson an upgrade over Vargas. He seems like the kind of pitcher the DRays might like...high potential, fairly young, fairly inexpensive.

I don't think the stars could possibly align to make that happen, could it?! If Doug Melvin actually thought of that strategy and pulled it off, I'd drive to Milwaukee and put a crown on him myself, and you for thinking of that possibility.

WOW

That's probably the most interesting development of this offseason for the Crew. The Estrada/Vargas/Aquino deal was nice and all, but WOW.

I've been saying that the "$10 million puzzle piece" is much more likely to be a pitcher, and this is one guy that I would not even blink at handing a 3/4 year, $35-45 mil contract. Sheets AND Schmidt? Two #1 starters? I think my brain just exploded.

I know this isn't even close to being a deal, or even a done deal. But it does sound like it's coming down to LAD, Sea, and US. That's awesome -- this is no Reggie White, but it would be a big step in the right direction

I would think that the asking price for Schmidt coming to Milwaukee would be somewhere in the 4 year 60 million dollar range and up. I think it would probably take a 4th year to convince Schmidt to come to Milwaukee over LA, if the rumor is true. Especially seeing what the Rangers might be offering Zito, per Ken Rosenthal,

"Rival executives continue to buzz about the size of the Rangers' expected offer to Zito, estimating that he will get a six-year proposal between $94 million and $102 million."

Losing a draft pick should not be a concern. Assuming Graffy signs elsewhere, we would be adding two picks in the top 40-50, and only losing one for Schmidt. it's a net gain, and the pick would be higher than our 2nd rounder

Be careful TLB, I got scolded for using the Reggie White comparison signing on this board by a few posters, when I stated that the Crew needs a big name to sign here and to give us credibility in that the Crew CAN COMPETE with all the young talent here.

I agree with you! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
