Worst TV Play by Play Teams

Buckylovesbeer
Rob Dibble is the only baseball analyst on television I've ever heard make noises during a play with regularity, i.e. "Ooh! Oh! I dunno if he'll make it... WOW!"
Ever listen to a Cubs radio broadcast? Ron Santo is the king of doing that. I find it very ammusing.

The fact that no one mentioned Bill Walton is the greatest atrocity in the history of the internet.

DHonks mentioned him in post #7. Atrocity averted.

Joe Buck is a disgusting act...FACT.

But the worst announcing team ever would be one of Chris Berman, John Madden, and Joe Morgan. I don't think I could even watch that for the unintentional comedic value. And I love unintentional comedy.

While we're on the subject of terrible play by play guys and Joe Morgan has been mentioned in this thread. I thought this would be the time to break out the funniest chat response ever.

After the weekend Texiera had, and the fact that he plays for a winning team do you see him as the favorite to win the AL MVP? Also who do you think is in the running for the AL Cy Young?

Joe Morgan (11:22 AM)

I see him as the front runner at this point. Remember there's still a long way to go. There's still a long way to go. Right now, he's the front runner.

Analysts usually don't get on my nerves. I guess I don't look for them to point out every amazing thing in the realm of the sport...just be somewhat interesting. I really liked Madden and I consider myself more than a 'casual' football fan. He made it entertaining IMO...were you going to learn all the ins and outs of the sport? Would it always make sense? Probably not...but IMO he didn't divert too much from the action on the field. The old ESPN Sunday Night crew was probably my favorite football crew...which goes against the grain a little bit to what people here have said and probably the general viewing public. Most fans here and at LL.net are more than 'casual' fans and I guess I don't expect to find a 'perfect' team.

I do though have guys that drive me nuts. Joe Buck and Troy Aikman are terrible. The major thing that drives me nuts is when there seems to be a bias and I think that duo is the king of a bias or easily changing their opinions as the game goes on. I'd much rather have 'simple' talk or other non-sense than having Buck or Aikman gushing or bashing a player. I know he's not a favorite, but over the years Aikman threw Favre under the bus numerous times during his years in Green Bay...it was annoying. Aikman would do the same with old Cowboys rivals too. IMO it was a clear bias and it still continues. Aikman just can't call an unbiased game IMO.

One thing I think we maybe need to remember is that in baseball the 'home' guys are going to be homers. That just comes with the territory.

Joe Buck bothers me because he never seems to get excited about anything.

except Randy Moss.

New question: why is it that all of the major networks' #1 guys are hated by most fans? Do casual fans (as in, the ones who don't post on message boards) actually like Joes Buck and Morgan? Also, does anyone else find that radio announcers are almost always better than TV announcers?

I think part of this is because you can't see the action most likely if your choosing radio (obviously you can choose radio and mute the tv). I think it's easier to 'paint the picture' at times then it is to actually breakdown video that the audience can see. I think it makes mistakes much more obvious in television when you're watching something and the tv guys botch what is going on...on radio you simply wouldn't know at times if something was botched. I also think people expect more entertainment value out of tv than they do radio.

Since I have seen a couple of radio guys mentioned(I do realize that this is a TV thread) I am going to throw Larry McCarren's name out there. He does provide some decent game analysis but during big plays he is in Ron Santo territory.

I never realized all the disdain for Joe Buck. I have always thought that he is pretty good but I guess that I do get the lack of excitement on his end. But worst TV team is any one that includes Tony Siragusa.

Now, if anyone wants to start a "best of" thread I have a couple ideas for that one

I despised Madden with a passion, the game had passed him bye and he spent a great deal of time uttering absolute nonsense.

I love Matt V in general, but hated him doing football. He just doesn't have the right voice for it.

People like Joe Morgan and Tim McCarver I can tolerate because they have good voices. I find myself rarely listening to their nonsense anyways, because since they're color guys, they just tend to recycle the same old cliches over and over again anyways.

I'll reiterate Joe Morgan, Kornheiser and Theismann. Even though he's not doing it anymore, don't forget about Dennis Miller.

The NFL needs to just record every game and have Jaws do the announcing before they air it. Either that or give him 16 TVs and let him announce all of them.

I love Matt V in general, but hated him doing football. He just doesn't have the right voice for it.

Maybe it was just nostalgia, but I actually liked Matty V doing football.

Why is that a funny chat response? Because it was repetitive?

Sometimes I think people hate or like someone so much that no matter what they say or do they can do no wrong or right in that person's eyes.

I think it's funny. It's not only repetitive, which is the way you might say something in real life but sounds stupid online, but it offers zero analysis, which is essentially what his opinion is worth.

This is one of those subjects that comes up all the time in various threads. This is the first time I have seen a thread completely dedicated to bad announcing. I guess I'm always surprised at how people get worked up about this topic. I honestly can not think of a sports announcer that annoys me to the point that I would list them on this thread. I either just don't notice it or I don't care. Or, in the case of someone like Ron Santo, I find it ammusing and I enjoy listening to it.

I guess the only time I ever get somewhat annoyed by an announcer is when I'm listening on the radio and I'm not sure what is going on or what the score is. Uecker is guilty of this on many occasions, but I still love him. Class Ueckerism's:

-"There's a fly ball. This one's going to end up in the left field seats" - usually this is a foul ball, but you would not necessarily know that if you didn't listen to Ueck on a regular basis.

-"Hey get up, get up, get off that wall......caught" - Uuuughhh!

-"There's a line drive to right, that will bring in two runs" - and then he does not give the updated score.

-"There's a line drive to right and that will bring up Dunn" - Ok, was that a hit or was it caught?

Now if we were talking about habits of bad drivers (and there was a thread about that a while ago), I could go on and on.

Its funny because its repetitive, doesn't actually say anything, and completely ignores half of the question. And it never fails - he has a response exactly like that in every chat he does.

I also think it's funny that he "chats" the same way he actually talks/broadcasts, which is rare.
