Gary Sheffield is about to burn bridges with yet another team. Personally, I have lost count on how many teams he has been on bad terms with.

And instead of disciplining him the Mets pinch hit him tonight. No one is bigger than the team. A suspension without pay for disrupting the team would have been more appropriate and let him grieve away at it.

What a surprise. I'd assume he doesn't realize that corner outfielders who are able to swing a decent bat are not valuable if they are both crippled and butchers in the field. Mr. Sheffield: You are old, and you are no longer good at baseball. Please quit now.

All that guy thinks about is his next contract. $154M in career earnings and he has to bring up his next contract in August.

How does Sheffield have ANY leverage to negotiate a contract? He just got released by a team owing him $14 million and signed with the Mets where the only reason he is even getting playing time is because their entire team is on the DL. He's a known clubhouse cancer, a known BALCO doser, and hated by half of cities in the big leagues. Get real Gary.

I am not defending it, but his motivation is pretty obvious. The Mets stink and are going nowhere. He already has his money, and if he is to stick around with a bad team for the rest of the season, he wants teh extension to 'make it worth his while.' Alternatively, the Mets release him, and he potentially has an opportunity to sign with a contender for the stretch run. Not defensing the tactic, but its really a no risk maneuver on his part. As this thread demonstrates, his reputation is already garbage, and the results will be he gets the rest of the summer off, taking no financial hit, or he goes and signs with a contender.
