Link Report for Thurs. 8/20 -- Final Updates Now Available; Dykstra Leaves Game with Head Injury

Mass Haas
wasn't Seidel throwing in the upper 80s lower 90s out of high school?

He was mid to high 80"s, like he is now, but the thought was he'd add velocity as he filled out. Problem is, he hasn't filled out yet. The injury this past offseason wrecked any chance of him getting in the offseason weight lifting he needs, hopefully he gets his work done this offseason. A couple of ticks more on the fastball would make him a real nice prospect.

His change-up is far better than what you see from guys tthis age. His curve was real good the 1st 3 innings tonight, before it lost its drop the final 2. He showed his athletism with a couple real good defense plays. Both his control and command are very strong. He was hitting his spots, or close to them, all night. Not suprising given his combination of athletism and smooth, sound mechanics.

Efrain Nieves may not walk anyone, but thats just because he pitches aggressively. His command is poor. He consistent misses the zone by wide margins, and misses the catchers glove by the width of the plate. I think this is because his delivery is so long in back. However, that does give him good deception, which accounts for his pretty solid K totals. Hitters just can't recognize when he's throwing his curve, and they flail away at it. He commands his curve well, its his fastball that gives him fits.

Final: Orem (Angels) 11, Helena 5

Helena Independent Record:

Orem ties franchise record with win over Brewers

The Orem Owlz tied a franchise record with their 14th straight win, beating the Helena Brewers 11-5 Thursday night in Orem.

Orangel Arenas threw six shutout innings for the Owlz and Helena didn't score until Mike Marseco singled and Cameron Garfield brought him in two batters later with an RBI single. Also in the inning, Joey Paciorek hit his second home run of the season for the Brewers, a grand slam to left field to trim the deficit.

The Brewers are now 4-11 and locked in the basement of the Pioneer League North division while the Owlz continue to stretch their lead in the South.

Arenas picked up the win, giving up just two hits and striking out five in six innings. Helena pitcher Adrian Rosario, however, hurled just 1/3 of an inning, giving up seven hits and seven runs, six of them earned.

Eric Arnett took the mound for the first time since Aug. 6. The Brewers first-round draft pick had been out with a sore arm and, just as the Helena staff has been doing lately with pitchers in their first games back, he started and went just a single inning. Arnett allowed just one hit, walked one and struck out a single batter.

Marseco paced the Helena offense, going 3-for-4 with one run scored. Orem third baseman Casey Haerther had the hot bat for the Owlz, hitting 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.

The Brewers are back in Orem today for a doubleheader, making up for Sunday's rainout at Kindrick Field. The two teams will play two seven-inning games beginning at 5:05 PM.

Helena Box Score

All we know is that we need to see RHP Eric Arnett hit the ground running next April, chewing up starts in either Wisconsin or Brevard to start the season; RHP Joel Morales allows at least one run for the 7th consecutive relief outing -- the Puerto Rico native has really struggled; RHP Ryan Platt, 24 years old next week, with his best outing of the season in garbage time; Michael Marseco raking in Helena -- everything he didn't do in Wisconsin; corner infielder Joey Paciorek isn't quite 21 years old yet, and there are some offensive skills there to build on...
