Mark Hendrickson?

dpapo

If Melvin can't find a good trade match for Mench with other teams, the L.A. Dodgers may be a back up plan. The Mark Hendrickson part is speculation by the writer, but it appears that the Dodgers did ask the Brewers about Mench.

"Meanwhile, Colletti seems to be accepting that he can't acquire a power bat without emptying the farm system, and he's not willing to do that. What he is willing to do, he won't exactly say."

"...The Dodgers also are believed to have made a run at Milwaukee outfielder Kevin Mench, as they did at last year's Winter Meetings, when he was coming off a 25-homer season in Texas. He was traded to Milwaukee during the 2006 season, in which he hit only 13 homers. The Brewers are looking for starting pitching, so Mark Hendrickson could be a trade candidate."

It's tough to judge what Lieber will do in the future, as he's thrown about 2000 innings and could break down, but he's a stud compared to Mark H.

I'd say banking on a guy that will be 37 at the start of 2007 to rebound in any way is quite unlikely. He's had two poor years out of the last three (his 2004 ERA is quite deceptive).

I'll take the guy who is 4-5 years younger, 5 million cheaper, had a better season last year, and probably wouldn't cost us Turnbow to acquire as well.

I'd still rather have Mench than either of them, but yes, if Lieber rebounds to his 2005 form, he's better.

I think the advantages of Hendrickson over Lieber is that Hendrickson is a few years younger, is left handed, cheaper, wouldn't have to give up Turnbow or Capellan, and if Villanueva or one of the other young pitchers appear ready to take a spot in the starting rotation, Hendrickson would probaby make a good left handed reliever out of the bullpen.

However, Lieber is probably more of a sure thing as far as being a starting pitcher.

His last two years are moer deceptive as he played in the bandbox in Philly. He has better numbers on the road than at home. 2004 is based on him playing in a better home park and having a great second half. Lieber is a better second half pitcher a la Jenks is supposedly as a hitter.

I don't think anyone is banking on him just that he would ne a nice veteran on the staff to stablize the bottom part of the order.

Yuk. Mark Hendrickson would make everyone here very nostalgic for Doug Davis. Or even for Ben Hendrickson. I really don't see him as an improvement on the pool of #5 starters...Tampa was really smart to cash in his fluky hot streak.

For all Lieber's issues, I think he's more likely to be close to a league average pitcher next year.

If the Brewers are scraping to get Hendrickson and Lieber I really don't understand why they aren't at least semi-pursuing Ohka

I'm almost positive that Doug spoke with team doctors about Ohka and they handed him an enormous red flag. If that's not the case, I'm equally baffled.
