Rule 5 - 40 man; Latest: OF Cain, RHP Rivas Protected

cheezscott

Bumping this thread, as players need to be added to the 40-man roster by Friday November 20th in order to be protected from Rule 5:

Remember --

Players who signed when 18 or younger are eligible for the draft after five years.

Players who signed when 19 or older are eligible after four years.

This is why LHP Zach Braddock and IF Taylor Green, for instance, do not need to be added this fall.

So in terms of 40-man roster consideration, these are the players who would be Rule 5 eligible if not placed on the 40-man roster.

Thanks to poster Minigoon for tracking a lot of this for us --

RHP Chris Cody

RHP Robert Hinton

RHP David Johnson

OF Brendan Katin

1B Joe Koshansky

RHP Josh Butler

OF Lorenzo Cain

OF Chuckie Caufield

C/1B J.R. Hopf

2B Shane Justis

RHP Mike McClendon

SS Yohannis Perez

LHP David Welch

LHP Brae Wright

C Anderson De La Rosa

1B Chris Errecart

LHP Mike Ramlow

RHP Amaury Rivas

UT Juan Sanchez

1B Brock Kjeldgaard

LHP Jose Romero

RHP Rolando Pascual

IF Erick Almonte

C Patrick Arlis

RHP Mike Jones

RHP Mike Burns

INF Johnny Raburn

RHP Juan Sandoval

OF Adam Stern

RHP Jim Henderson

So Lorenzo Cain, Josh Butler, and Amaury Rivas appear to be locks. Close but probably no cigar on Chris Cody.

That would bump the 40-man roster from 33 to 36.

I'll make a pitch for Welch - mediocre season overall, but look at what he did after the All-Star break (can't find the stats) and in the WBC. Easy to stash a LHP in the pen for a year. Sure, unlikely to happen, however IIRC his ERA after the All Star break was well under 3.00 and he pitched as good as Bucci in the WBC.

As for minor league free agents, I'd like to see Capuano, Corporan, and maybe Flores back, but the rest I couldn't care less about.

Over the course of this year and next, I anticipate the Brewers putting together some trades like Gamel/Anundsen/Baron for one real player and bring down the 45+ players vying to make the 40 man roster to a number much closer to the actual 40...

Yes, nice when all the analysis reaches a fairly obvious conclusion. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

The moves are being discussed in the Major league Forum here. We'll close this thread and open a new Rule 5 thread when the Winter Meetings draw near in December.

Once a player's original affiliated contract is terminated, minor league players all assume one-year deals going forward with any organization that signs them. Often, especially with younger players below AAA who perform well after literally being picked up from the scrap heap, the organization and the player will both seek to renew the contract for another season fairly quickly -- RHP's Jim Henderson and Brandon Kintzler would seem to fall into that category this year. Here are some of the players who aren't on their original Brewers affiliated contract who would otherwise be free to walk in mid-October:

RHP Brandon Kintzler

C Martin Maldonado

C Sean McCraw

RHP Ryan DeLaughter

Every year when we try and determine who is eligible for minor league free agency, this issue comes up. Then we don't see their names on any Baseball America transaction list and get puzzled.

Someone was kind enough to help us out --

Normally the player is signed to a contract with the same number of years that were remaining on the player's original contract when he was released. It's kind of picked up where it was left off.

It saves an organization the hassle of having to renegotiate more contracts each season and doesn't delay the player's minor league free agency (if the player makes it that far). Plus the player is often more than willing to sign for multiple years, given they don't normally have any other options as a released player.

So in Sean McCraw's case, for instance, he was signed to a 3-year contract last spring. Makes perfect sense, and now we know. Less headaches next fall! Thanks!
