RHP Brooks Hall Video News Report on his Signing

Jim Callis comments in BA Chat:

Nathan (Milwaukee): How did the Brewers do in this year's draft?

Jim Callis: I liked their draft a lot. Their top three picks-Arnett, Davis and Heckathorn-were good talent values for where they went. Max Walla can really hit, they spent to add Brooks Hall's upside in the fourth round and Del Howell was a steal in the 15th round. Ditto for Scooter Gennett in the 16th.

Gamel with an early home run. I think he's found his stroke again.

Amaury Rivas demands our attention. He's got the best change-up in the FSL according to BA, plus he pitches in the low 90s. He's been phenomanol since the FSL All-Star break.

Nashville Bottom 4th

  • Joe Koshansky walks.
  • Adam Heether pops out to shortstop Adrian Cardenas.
  • Mat Gamel out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Jerome Williams to first baseman Jeff Baisley. Joe Koshansky to 2nd.

Why in the world are they having Gamel bunt runners over? Anybody else a little perturbed by this? Could have been Gamel just trying to bunt for a base hit too, but that just seems strange.

I'm perturbed by most Don Money stratigies, including this one. Why in the world does Joe Koshansky bat in front of Gamel and Heether?

Wow, Amaury Rivas struck out 10 in six innings against just three hits and a walk.
Where you been dude?!

Yay for other people pimping Rivas so And That and I don't have to anymore.

Good for young Mr. Dennis, you know who else is having a pretty good season in Helena but doesn't get much love is Chris Ellington, I know he went 0-4 tonight, but he's become a box score name for me personally.

Scarpetta has been really good sans July 25th since the break, if he can find some consistency with his stuff he could move fast. Once he quits giving away free runs with BBs he'll be in very good shape.

Lucroy didn't get his double, too bad, but he did extend his hitting streak. I don't recall Green ever slumping this hard for this long, he was hitting so well earlier, here's hoping he gets back on track soon.

I see the Nashville opponent Sacramento had Brett Wallace who is hitting a little under .300. He had a HR tonight. I'm glad he won't be around for the next half dozen or so years.

Final: Sacramento (Athletics) 11, Nashville 9

Nashville Site Game Summary:

River Cats Edge Sounds In Series Opener, 11-9

NASHVILLE - The Sacramento River Cats slammed four home runs to build an early lead then withstood a late Nashville rally to post a 11-9 victory over the Sounds on Tuesday evening at historic Greer Stadium in the opener of a four-game series.

Nashville (65-59) faced a 9-2 deficit after seven frames then scored seven runs over the final two innings and had the potential tying run in scoring position with one out in the bottom of the ninth before falling short.

Sacramento first baseman Jeff Baisley led the visitors' 16-hit attack with a 3-for-5, three-RBI effort and finished a triple short of the cycle in the contest.

Designated hitter Mat Gamel staked the Sounds to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with his tenth home run of the year, a two-run shot to right-center off Sacramento starter Jerome Williams. Gamel's longball extended his hitting streak to eight games, matching his best effort this season.

The River Cats used a trio of third-inning longballs to jump out to a 4-2 lead against Sounds starter Chris Cody. Catcher Anthony Recker evened the score at 2-2 with a two-run blast to left-center that careened off the guitar-shaped scoreboard. Later in the frame, third sacker Brett Wallace propelled the visitors into the lead later in the frame with a two-out solo longball to right-center, his 11th roundtripper of the year. Aaron Cunningham followed Wallace's blast with a solo homer to left, his tenth of the year.

Sacramento added to its lead in the fourth. After loading the bases with none out against Cody, Eric Patterson lifted a sacrifice fly to left to up the advantage to 5-2. Sounds shortstop J.J. Hardy thwarted the Cats' attempt to further increase the lead when he threw out Adrian Cardenas at home while he tried to score on a groundout.

The River Cats put the game out of reach with a four-spot in the top of the seventh against Sounds reliever Matt Ginter. Cunningham ripped an RBI double into the left field corner before ex-Sound Eric Munson followed with a two-run two-bagger down the right field line. Baisley added a two-out RBI single later in the frame to increase the lead to 9-2.

Nashville first baseman Joe Koshansky pulled into a tie for the team lead when he clubbed his 20th home run of the year in the bottom of the eighth inning, a three-run shot to right that chased Williams from the contest. The blast, which also scored Adam Stern and Corey Patterson, made it a 9-5 contest.

AUDIO: Joe Koshansky Two-Run HR

Baisley closed out the visitors' scoring with a two-run homer off David Johnson in the top of the ninth inning, the first baseman's eighth tater of the year.

For the second straight evening, the Sounds didn't go down without a fight when facing a ninth-inning deficit. After loading the bases with one out against River Cats reliever Henry Rodriguez on a pair of walks and a Stern single, Patterson (3-for-5) emptied the bags when he greeted Sam Demel with a triple into the right field corner.

Hardy followed with an RBI single to left that pulled Nashville within 11-9. Koshansky stepped to the plate and ripped a double off Baisley's glove at first base to put the potential tying run on second with only one out. Demel recovered to fan Adam Heether for the second out and, after intentionally walking Gamel to load the bases, struck out Brendan Katin on four pitches to end the contest and preserve the win.

Williams (4-4) picked up the win for Sacramento after allowing five runs on seven hits over 7 1/3 innings.

Cody (6-7) took the loss after giving up five runs on six hits, including three homers, in only four frames of action.

The clubs continue the series at 7:00 PM on Wednesday night. Right-hander Mike Jones will make his career Triple-A debut when he mans the bump for the Sounds to face right-hander Clayton Mortensen (7-7, 4.31).

Nashville Box Score

Top four in the Sounds order went 10-for-19; Corey Patterson a home run shy of a cycle; Joe Koshansky on base four times and a triple shy of a cycle; it would be nice to get an update on Angel Salome (finger still?), but there's been no media covergae of the Sounds for weeks -- oh yeah, he's still "banged up"; in his last six starts covering 30 innings, LHP Chris Cody has allowed 43 hits and 25 runs -- ouch, big time...

The two-run HR RHP David Johnson allowed in the top of the 9th proved not insignificant, but the difference in the end...

Final: West Tenn (Mariners) 4, Huntsville 1

Huntsville Site Game Summary

Seventh Inning Swings Game in Jaxx Favor

Two-Out Runs Turn Tables in West Tenn's Win

By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars

Matt Mangini drove in the tie-breaking runs with a two-out, two-run double in the seventh inning to push West Tenn past Huntsville 4-1 Tuesday night in the second of a five-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Jaxx improved to 28-24 in the second half and maintained their one game lead over Tennessee in the North Division with 18 games to go, while the Stars dipped to 19-32 in the second half and 57-63 overall.

Stars' starter Nick Green gave up a leadoff single to Ezequiel Carrera to start the game and then retired the next 15 hitters he faced, marking 29 out of 30 West Tenn hitters who had been set down since the fifth inning Monday night. The right-hander took a 1-0 lead into the seventh when Carrera legged out an infield hit to start the frame and advanced to third base on two groundball outs. Guillermo Quiroz singled to right field to deliver Carrera with the tying run and chase Green from the game. Bobby Bramhall took over and gave up a base hit to Johan Limnota that was followed by Mangini's decisive hit that Drew Anderson got his glove on but couldn't wrap up as he ran into the left field wall.

Green dropped to 0-4 after allowing two runs on four hits and fanning six. The Stars have totaled three runs scored for the right-hander while he has been on the hill in his four turns. Limonta doubled with two outs in the ninth and scored an insurance run when Mangini singled into center field. Anthony Varvaro tossed a perfect ninth to preserve the win for the Jaxx, who downed the Stars for a seventh time in 21 meetings. Brodie Downs, Edward Parades and Mumba Rivera combined to blank the home side in the seventh and eighth innings.

Chuck Caufield singled with two outs in the second inning, moved to second base when Brett Lawrie, Milwaukee's first round draft choice in 2008, was hit by a pitch in his first double-A at-bat, and scored when J.R. Hopf singled into center field to give the Stars a 1-0 lead. All five of Huntsville's runs in the series have been scored with two out. West Tenn starter Luis Munoz then shut out the home side over the next five frames to earn his seventh win of the season and first in four tries over Huntsville. He yielded five hits, walked one and struck out five to improve to 7-6.

Huntsville's Jonathan Lucroy extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a fourth inning single, while Drew Anderson lost a 12-game hit string and Lorenzo Cain's nine-game hit streak was brought to an end. The Stars fell to 22-29 at Joe Davis Stadium.

The series continues Wednesday night with right-hander Josh Butler taking the hill for the Stars against West Tenn right-hander Dan Cortes. Coverage of the game begins at 6:45 PM central time and can be heard through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Huntsville Box Score

MLB.com noted that Brett Lawrie would exclusively be a DH as the Stars are facing American League affiliates, but Lawrie played second base here as Shane Justis sat; RHP Nick Green hasn't sulked, at least statistically, after dropping to AA and losing his 40-man spot...

Final: Brevard County 2, Dunedin (Blue Jays) 1

Game Summary from the Blue Jays' Site

Manatees shut down Blue Jays in 2-1 win

Huggins hard-luck loser as Rivas strikes out 10 for Brevard

By Tim Livingston / Dunedin Blue Jays

The Dunedin Blue Jays offense has gone stagnant, and with Brevard County preparing for a playoff run, even when the Manatees offense isn't doing too well, that's still enough.

Amaury Rivas struck out 10 on his way to his 12th win of the year and the Blue Jays could not manage to come through with runners on base as they watched the Manatees take game two of their series, 2-1.

The Jays (58-59, 25-25) saw Scott Downs start the contest to get in his first inning of rehab work, but he only was able to record one out, giving up two hits and watching one of his inherited runners score on a sacrifice fly from Steffan Wilson.

Dunedin got the run back in the third when Sean Shoffit took Rivas deep and gone to right field to tie the game at 1-1. It was Shoffit's fourth home run of the season.

That was the only mistake that Rivas made all night, as he was brilliant the rest of the way, with his 10 strikeouts coming across six innings while giving up only three hits and walking one.

Rivas' main counterpart on the evening was pitching well himself, but Chuck Huggins (4-2) gave up one run too many, which sadly, was his only run given up, with Martin Maldonado slapping his second double of the night to left-center field in the fifth, scoring Sergio Miranda.

Huggins pitched very well himself, giving up three hits and that lone run while striking out three, but the offense was not there for him on what turned out to be his seventh straight quality start.

Dunedin left seven of their 10 base runners stranded on the night, and was 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. They had two on in the seventh with one away, but Raul Barron popped out and Shoffit grounded out to end that threat.

Then, the Blue Jays got two runners on with two outs in the ninth, but Barron grounded out sharply to Chris Errecart at first, who took a high hop off his shoulder, kept it in front of him, and flipped it to Michael Fiers covering first base to end the game, giving Fiers his first save of the season.

Bright spots for the Blue Jays included two hit nights from Manny Rodriguez and Tyler Pastornicky, who made his debut with the Blue Jays at shortstop after being called up from Lansing.

The Manatees (69-41, 29-17) have the best record in the Florida State League and have now won 13 of 17 games against Dunedin this season. They have a chance to go for their fourth series sweep of the Blue Jays this season on Wednesday at 7:00 PM (6:00 Central).

Brevard County Box Score

Eric Farris 2-for-4 with stolen base # 60, hitting an insane .436 in August with 14 steals in 15 attempts; Caleb Gindl his 16th steal in 20 attempts this season; RHP Amaury Rivas now with a 1.11 WHIP in 122 innings -- this is the FSL, but that's still outstanding...

Brevard County Game Log

Fantastic work by the meteoric reliever, Michael Fiers, to bail out LHP Lucas Luetge in the 7th --

  • Pitcher Change: Lucas Luetge replaces Amaury Rivas.
  • Matthew Liuzza walks.

Final: Wisconsin 1, Beloit (Twins) 0

Wisconsin Site Game Summary

Scarpetta is baseball for 1-0

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - A 1-0 score is getting to be old hat for Wisconsin Timber Rattlers pitcher Cody Scarpetta. The Rattlers right-hander picked up the win as the Rattlers beat the Beloit Snappers 1-0 on Tuesday night at Time Warner Cable Field. Scarpetta has been involved in four 1-0 games this season and he is 3-1 in games with just a single run crossing the plate. On Tuesday, he pitched six innings in relief of Dave Bush and struck out six for his fourth win of the season.

Wisconsin (55-66 overall, 21-30 second half) scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Josh Prince doubled to start the frame. A sacrifice bunt by Pete Fatse moved him to third base. Brock Kjeldgaard singled over the drawn in infield to send Prince home for the early advantage.

Bush, in his second rehab start for the Rattlers, pitched three scoreless and hitless innings. He walked one and struck out four before reaching his limit. Bush threw 37 pitches in the game before turning the game over to Scarpetta.

Chris Mehring notes Dave Bush's velocity (or lack thereof)

Beloit (48-74, 21-31) got a decent start from Daniel Berlind. The tall righty allowed one run on four hits over five innings, but he was tagged with his thirteenth loss of the season.

Scarpetta faced a jam in the top of the seventh inning. He gave up a one-out triple to Nate Hanson that put the tying run on third base. Scarpetta rose to the challenge and struck out the next batter for out number two. A grounder to short ended the inning and kept the Rattlers up 1-0.

Scarpetta pitched a perfect eighth and a perfect ninth to nail down the Rattlers third straight win.

Wisconsin's victory pulled them out of the cellar in the Midwest League's Western Division and -- with Clinton losing 6-3 to Cedar Rapids on Tuesday night -- the Rattlers are just three games out of the second half Wild Card spot with 19 games left in the regular season.

The Timber Rattlers will be off on Wednesday before resuming their homestand on Thursday. The Cedar Rapids Kernels will be in town to start a four-game series. Game time on Thursday night is 7:05 PM.

Wisconsin Box Score

How liberal is the Midwest League's playoff system that the T-Rats can still entertain postseason thoughts? No walks the most impressive part of Cody Scarpetta's evening; say what you will, but Brett Lawrie's absence does leave a hole in an already light lineup; a capable Mike Brownstein did arrive, and walked in his debut low-A game...

Brewers drop fifth straight with 6-3 loss to Ogden

Helena Independent Record

Another lead blown, another loss in the bag for the Helena Brewers, who dropped their fifth consecutive game with a 6-3 loss at Ogden on Tuesday.

It was the second night in a row that the Brewers gave up a lead, though it was much smaller one compared to Monday's, when they had a 5-1 difference before the Raptors rallied back - twice - to beat them 11-10.

The Brewers haven't won since a 3-2 victory over Ogden one week ago and are now 3-10 and remain firmly locked in the cellar of the Pioneer League North Division.

Helena's Michael Roberts hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Sean Halton to give the Brewers a 2-1 lead by the end of the second.

But, Ogden's Lenell McGee homered to lead off the bottom of the third, an error and wild pitch allowed runners to advance to scoring positions and Brian Cavazos-Galvez grounded out to score David Iden for the go-ahead run.

Helena tied it up when Scott Krieger tripled to bring in Roberts in the top of the fifth.

Just like they did before, the Raptors answered right back when Brian Ruggiano tripled to lead off the bottom of the inning and scored the gamewinner on a sacrifice fly by Cavazos-Galvez.

McGee went 2-for-4, scoring a run and two RBI, tripling in the eighth to score Jeremy Wise.

Iden also finised 2-4 with a run scored in the sixth, while Ruggiano was 2-4 with a run and an RBI.

Joey Paciorek went 3-3 for the Brewers, but wasn't able to score or bring in a runner. Krieger and Halton both finished 2-4.

Andre Lamontagne (2-2) ended with the loss after taking over for starter Jake Odorrizi in the fourth. Lamontagne finished with two earned runs on five hits with a walk and three strike outs.

Matthew Magill (5-2) lasted five innings for the win, giving up three runs, two of them earned, on six hits while walking two and striking out four. Jordan Roberts went three innings without giving up a hit while Steven Ames picked up the save by striking out the side.

The Brewers remain in Ogden tonight for the third game in their weeklong road trip to the South Division. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM (8:00 Central).

Helena Box Score

Michael Roberts continues his intriguing back-and-forth between catcher and center field; the two home runs Jake Odorizzi was victimized by were the first two he's allowed this season in 31.2 innings...
