Manatees up 5-1 with bases loaded and one out in the 2nd inning of the opener, but there's a rain delay. Hopefully things don't get wiped out. Chris Errecart and Brent Brewer (only his 2nd of the season, slugging .288 - ouch) have homered.

Final: Nashville 9, Fresno (Giants) 1

Nashville Box Score

Nice day at the plate for most of the Sounds, and hopefully J.J. Hardy's 1-4 performance, including a BB and a 2-run shot will get his swing straightened out sooner rather than later for his return to Milwaukee. Mat Gamel continues to hit the ball better with a 2-4 night, and Chris Narveson Ks 11 in 5.2 IP.

Nashville Game Log

I'm not sure how Fresno only scored one run in the sixth, but that seemed to wake up the Sounds' bats.

Alright, the above post took way too long with my iPhone, so I'll abbreviate the link report before Mass stops by in the morning to work his usual magic.

Final: Huntsville 0, Mobile 1

Lucroy as noted above continues to be on fire, going 2-3 with his 26th double and a BB.

The Brevard County games as noted by Mass above unfortunately were both washed out.

Final: Beloit 4, Wisconsin 2

4 of the 5 hits Suppan gave up went for extra bases. Nick Tyson goes 4+ strong innings in relief, and Kjeldgaard hits his 18th dinger.

Final: Orem 9, Helena 3

Bright spots include Hiram Burgos having a strong start, and Cameron Garfield hitting his 3rd home run.

The baby Brewers are down 6-5 to the Indians. Tyler Roberts is 2-2 so far with a BB. Blake Billings got roughed up early in this one.

Sellout Watches Narveson Fan 11 In 9-1 Win

NASHVILLE - The Nashville Sounds beat the Fresno Grizzlies 9-1 on Saturday night at historic Greer Stadium, the ninth straight victory over Fresno. A season-high 10,675 fans attended historic Greer Stadium for this evening's game, the largest crowd in 119 games since May 5, 2008 against Salt Lake.

Nashville (65-56) is now in first place in the American Northern Division by a half game over Memphis after the Redbirds lost to Sacramento earlier in the evening.

The top of the lineup occupied by Adam Stern and Corey Patterson went a combined 6-for-9 with four RBIs and two runs scored. In his second game with the Sounds, shortstop J.J. Hardy added a two-run home run in the win.

The Nashville pitching staff fanned a season-high 14 batters on Saturday night, with starting pitcher Chris Narveson accounting for a season-high 11 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings of work for the Sounds.

Narveson struck out the first four batters of the game and fanned 11 of the first 15 batters he faced. The southpaw allowed two hits in the opening frame, then retired the next 13 consecutive batters. The Grizzlies got to Narveson in the top of the sixth inning with three straight base hits by Ben Copeland, Kevin Frandsen, and John Bowker that gave Grizzlies a short 1-0 in the top of the sixth inning.

After Stern hit a single to start the rally for the Sounds in the next frame, Hardy blasted a two-run shot down the left field line that put the Sounds ahead at 2-1.

AUDIO: J.J. Hardy Two-Run Home Run

In the next inning, Mat Gamel smacked a double down the right field line, with Brendan Katin crushing his team-leading 31st double off the centerfield wall that scored Gamel. Later in the frame, Stern recorded his second hit of the game and scored Katin for another run. Fresno reliever Steve Edlefsen followed by walking the next three hitters that gave Nashville a 5-1 lead.

The Sounds tacked on four more runs in the next inning and extended the Nashville lead to 9-1. Gamel and Katin started the inning with hits again, with Stern and Patterson chiming in with RBI hits.

Matt Ginter (3-3) picked up the win for Nashville, relieving Narveson with the bases loaded in the sixth inning and getting Matt Downs to ground out and end the inning. Ryan Houston added two scoreless innings in relief, while also scoring a run at the plate.

Ramon Ortiz (5-4) took the loss, surrendering four runs on six hit while striking out seven in 6 2/3 innings for Fresno.

The Sounds and Grizzlies continue with the third game of a four-game series at 6:00 PM CT on Sunday evening. Nashville right-hander Tim Dillard (10-5, 4.21) toes the rubber against Fresno right-hander Ryan Sadowski (5-2, 4.24).

Huntsville Site Game Summary

BayBears Shutout Stars

Huntsville Held in Check Offensively, Again

By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars

Chris Rahl knocked in the only run of the game and three pitchers blanked Huntsville on seven hits in Mobile's 1-0 win Saturday night in the fourth of a five-game set at Hank Aaron Stadium. The BayBears won their third straight to improve to 21-28 in the second half and 58-61 overall, while the Stars fell to 17-31 in the second half and 55-62 overall. The BayBears have won ten of the 14 games in the season series and sent the Stars to their 14th loss in the last 17 games.

The Stars had chances early in the game, as they put runners at first and second base with one out in the first inning before Jonathan Lucroy grounded into a double play to end the inning. They loaded the bases with two hits and a walk with two outs in the third inning before Taylor Green bounced back to the mound to end the threat. Meanwhile, Stars' starter Mark Holliman worked out of a runners at first and second base and one out jam in each of the first two frames.

Mobile finally pushed across the game's lone run in the fourth when Orlando Mercado doubled with one out, moved to third base on a Cyle Hankerd single and scored on Rahl's fly ball to center field. Shane Justis singled with two outs in the top half of the fifth but was thrown out trying to score on a Drew Anderson double to end the inning.

BayBears' starter Cody Evans, 2-6 with a 6.13 earned run average in 11 prior home starts, blanked the Stars on six hits over five frames, walking three and striking out three. He picked up the win to improve to 5-11 and earned his first win since July 16. Mobile's starters have held Huntsville to two runs, one earned, on 17 hits over 24 2/3 innings in the four games. Abe Woody took over in the sixth and worked out of trouble by striking out Chuck Caufield and J.R. Hopf to end the inning and strand Lucroy, who had doubled to start the frame to extend his hitting streak to 16 games, at third base. Woody went two shutout frames and was followed by former Brewer farmhand Roque Mercedes (Felipe Lopez trade), who set down all six batters he faced to end the game and earn his first double-A save.

For a third time in his last four starts, Holliman went six innings and allowed only one run but did not receive enough support to wind up on the winning side of the ledger. He suffered his fifth straight losing decision after yielding six hits and walking three and remains winless since July 1. Bobby Bramhall tossed two scoreless innings in relief.

The series finishes Sunday night with southpaw David Welch taking the mound for the Stars against BayBears' right-hander Barry Enright. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 PM central time and can be heard through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Evans, bullpen help BayBears top Stars

By ARTHUR L. MACK

Mobile Press-Register Sports Correspondent

Mobile got five strong innings out of starter Cody Evans and Abe Woody and Roque Mercedes provided bullpen support as the BayBears defeated the Huntsville Stars 1-0 Saturday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.

Evans (5-1) allowed six of Huntsville's seven hits and struck out three. Woody allowed only one hit, and Mercedes retired all six batters he faced to pick up his first save of the year.

The BayBears won their third straight, ensuring their first series win since playing Birmingham from July 15-19. It was also their first 1-0 win in two years.

Orlando Mercado and Pedro Ciriaco accounted for four of the BayBears' seven hits. Defensively, second baseman Ciriaco teamed with shortstop Mark Hallberg to turn three double plays. Hallberg also hit safely in his 17th consecutive game.

"When you look and see all of those zeroes on the board, you can't ask for anything more," said Mobile manager Hector De La Cruz. "Evans did great tonight, and Mercedes never lost his tempo. They used their pitch selection effectively."

Mark Holliman (7-7) took the loss for Huntsville. Shane Justis hit safely in his 16th straight game for the Stars.

"In the first half of the season, we were getting hits and winning the close games, but in the second half, we haven't been scoring," said Stars manager Bob Miscik. "Mark battled and got some walks, but he gave us a chance (to win).

"We turned three double plays on them (Mobile) Friday night, and tonight they turned the tables on us."

Mercado gave Mobile the only run it needed in the bottom of the fourth when he doubled with one out and scored on Chris Rahl's bases-loaded sacrifice fly. The BayBears then turned back a Stars scoring threat in the top of the fifth when Justis singled and tried to reach home on Drew Anderson's line drive to right field, but was tagged out by Mercado on a relay throw by Ciriaco.

"That was me," Miscik said when asked about Justis' decision to score from first. "I told him let's try it because I was hoping for a bad throw or dropped ball. I took a shot, knowing he was out if they (Mobile) don't mess it up."

Right-hander Barry Enright (8-7, 3.98) starts for Mobile in the series finale tonight at 6:05 while Huntsville counters with left-hander David Welch (5-8, 4.87).

Wisconsin Site Game Summary

Beloit ends Rattlers win streak

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Daniel Osterbrock had another good outing against the Timber Rattlers. The lefty, who threw a seven-inning complete game against Wisconsin in June, allowed two runs (one earned) and struck out seven for the win. The Snappers ended Wisconsin's three-game winning streak and spoiled a rehab start by Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Jeff Suppan with a 4-2 win.

Beloit (48-71 overall, 21-28 second half) scored a pair of runs off Suppan in the second inning. Danny Rams reached on a leadoff single. One out later Michael Harrington drove Rams home with a double. Dominic De La Osa followed with an RBI double for a 2-0 lead.

Brock Kjeldgaard brought the Rattlers (52-67, 18-30) to within a run in the bottom of the second. He hit a moonshot homer to left-center to lead off the inning. The home run was the eighteenth of the season for Kjeldgaard and moved him to within three of tying the single season franchise record for home runs.

But the Snappers added single runs in the third an fourth innings against Suppan. James Beresford doubled to start the third and would score on an RBI grounder by Ramon Santana. In the fourth, John Waltenbury tripled to start the inning. An RBI grounder by Harrington made the score 4-1.

Suppan left the game after that grounder by Harrington. He allowed four runs on five hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out one.

Wisconsin scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Rattlers had runners at first and second with two outs and Sean McCraw's grounder to third went through the legs of Ramon Santana and a run scored to cut the lead to two runs.

The Rattlers bullpen kept the game close. Nick Tyson tossed 4-2/3 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief with four strikeouts. Corey Frerichs added a scoreless top of the ninth.

The Rattlers offense wasted a few opportunities. Wisconsin had two on with no outs in the seventh inning, but could not score.

Billy Bullock, the fourth Beloit pitcher of the night, retired the first two batters in the ninth. Wisconsin managed to put two runners on with two outs, but Bullock got the final out on a popup to close out the Rattlers.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Sunday afternoon. Daniel Meadows (12-5, 4.02) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Beloit will counter with Liam Hendricks (1-3, 4.03) as their starting pitcher.

Sunday is a Brewers Sunday at Time Warner Cable Field. Former Brewers pitcher Jerry Augustine will be on hand to throw out a first pitch before the game and sign autographs for the first three innings.

Timber Rattlers players will be wearing their Brewers-themed jerseys and will be available for a post-game autograph session.

Game time on Sunday is 1:05 PM.

Wisconsin Box Score

Tough 0-for-5 night for Josh Prince, and he ended both the 7th and 9th inning threats described above; the Snappers' James Beresford is the brother of former Aussie Brewer farmhand RHP Simon Beresford,,,

Suppan struggles in rehab start as Rattlers lose

By Brett Christopherson

Post-Crescent staff writer

GRAND CHUTE - When last we saw Milwaukee Brewers starter Jeff Suppan, he was knocked around for 10 earned runs and 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings in a 14-6 drubbing to lowly Washington on July 27.

His line didn't look much better on Saturday.

The right-hander was pelted for four extra-base hits and five overall while surrendering four earned runs through 3 1/3 innings to complete a bumpy rehab outing with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers during a 4-2 Midwest League setback against Beloit as a crowd of 5,325 looked on at Fox Cities Stadium.

Suppan, sidelined with an oblique injury, was scheduled to throw a maximum of 45 pitches. He exited after tossing 39 pitches - 31 of which were strikes - and wound up saddled with the loss.

Afterward, he insisted he was more concerned with his health, rather than the numbers.

"Preparing for this start after the layoff, I was looking for no apprehension on my part with my oblique, and I felt that I didn't have any apprehension," said the 34-year-old Suppan, who has scuffled in 21 starts this season with the Brewers, going 5-8 with a 5.27 ERA, with a 1.70 walks and hits per innings pitched average.

"So that was the main key for me. Pitch-wise … my command wasn't really where it would be (with) getting proper throwing and proper bullpens. But I was very happy overall with how I felt."

His start looked promising as he worked a three-up, three-down first. But the Snappers strung together consecutive doubles to highlight a two-run, three-hit second. A leadoff double in the third eventually scored, as did a triple to right-center to open the fourth.

To put Suppan's outing in perspective, relievers Nick Tyson and Corey Frerichs combined to blank the Snappers and allow only one hit over the final 5 2/3 innings.

"My main concern was my side," Suppan repeated. "Getting up and down. Going out and pitching."

And finding his way back into a Milwaukee rotation that's in need of a boost. The Brewers have also been without another starter in righty Dave Bush, whose trying to rebound from a triceps injury and hasn't pitched for the Crew since June 20.

Bush made a rehab start with the Rattlers on July 10 and is scheduled to do so again on Tuesday in a series-finale against Beloit at 7:05 PM.

"I've never had a type of injury like this before, and this is my first rehab start I've ever had," said Suppan, whose rehab work has included four bullpen sessions - two that saw him throw just fastballs at a 25-pitch maximum, and two others in which he was allowed to use all of this pitches.

"Obviously, my plan is not to be on the (disabled list), my plan is to help the team any way I can. We're still evaluating, and we'll see how things feel tomorrow. But all in all, I was very happy and pleased with how I felt today."

Rattlers coaches, meanwhile, were pleased to welcome another big leaguer to their clubhouse.

"When you have a guy like that coming through here, their eyes are wide open and they're taking it all in," manager Jeff Isom said. "Hopefully, they watch and see how these guys prepare. You have a guy who's in the big leagues right now, a major leaguer, and how he prepares and goes about his business, you just hope that our guys follow and watch and see what he does."

Brewers drop third straight

By CURT SYNNESS - Helena Independent Record

The streak continues for the Orem Owlz, at 10 straight…twice.

The Owlz beat the Helena Brewers 9-3 at Kindrick Field Saturday, extending their win streak to 10. It is also their 10th consecutive victory over the Brewers.

Orem has not lost to Helena since August 17, 2007.

The Owlz are leading the Pioneer League Southern Division second half, with an 11-1 record. The Brewers slide to 3-8 entering the final game of the three-game series this afternoon.

The game started out as a pitching duel between Orem's Orangel Arenas and Hiram Burgos. Both hurlers were firing fastballs at over 90 miles per hour, and each took no-hitters into the fourth inning.

Orem went ahead 2-0 in the top of the fourth. In the Brewers' half of the inning, Cameron Garfield put the home team on the board with a leadoff home run over the left field fence.

The two clubs traded scores in the sixth, Helena's tally coming on Chris Ellington's ninth tater of the season.

The Brewers tied things up at 3-all in the bottom of the seventh, as they loaded the bases with no one out. After Sean Halton and Joe Paciorek singled, Mike Roberts worked a base on balls. With one down, shortstop Michael Marseco brought home pinch-runner Edgar Trejo with a sacrifice fly to left, but Paciorek was doubled off between second and third to end the inning.

Then the Owlz pulled away late, scoring four in the eighth and two in the ninth.

Arenas and Burgos both went six innings, as each hurler struck out five batsmen apiece. Arenas, whose heater was clocked at 94 mph, allowed just three hits. He was relieved by Mike Piazza, who earned the win. Jonathan Pokorny took the loss.

One of the best defensive plays of the contest took place in the seventh stanza. Capital City left fielder Ellington fielded Justin Bass' single, and then rifled a seed to catcher Garfield, gunning down Terrell Alliman at the plate, who was trying to score from second.

Orem outhit Helena 12-6, led by Carlos Ramirez and Casey Haerther, with two base knocks and two runs batted in apiece. Teammate Kevin Ramos was 2-for-3, with a double and two runs scored.

Ellington swung the big stick for the locals, ripping a two-bagger to go along with his homer.

NOTE: The home plate umpire for Saturday's game was Roger Craig III. His grandfather, Roger Craig, played 11 years in the major leagues (1955-66), with the Dodgers, Mets, Cardinals, Reds and Phillies. Craig Sr. later managed the San Diego Padres and the San Francisco Giants.

Helena Box Score

Orem's Mike Piazza is the second cousin of the "other" Mike Piazza; Cutter Dykstra 0-for-4 as the DH, now at .197 with only three extra-base hits (all homers) in 137 Helena AB's (.567 OPS); this sqaud doesn't bode well for Wisconsin's 2010 success, does it?

Final: Arizona Brewers 8, Arizona Indians 7, 14 innings

Arizona Box Score

Wow, what a game! Each team scored five runs in the first, then the Indians led 6-5 after two innings before Tyler Roberts singled in Max Walla to tie it at 6-6 in the 7th; Stosh Wawrzasek pitched four stellar innings late, but looked to be the tough-luck loser when the baby Tribe pushed across an unearned 14th inning run; but Walla and Roberts teamed up again to lead off the bottom of the 14th with back-to-back jack-jackety-jacks for the walk-off win! Kudos to RHP Andrew Dunn, who stranded two of three baserunners to prevent RHP Blake Billings from an even more disastrous start; Billings retired only four of the 13 batters he faced, walking seven; RHP Tyler Cravy and rehabbing LHP Jose Romero were also excellent; the teams combined to steal 11 bases in 12 attempts...

By the way, did we tell you 18-year-old Roberts, the LH-hitting catcher drafted in the 10th round this year, reached all seven times up as well as crushing the game-winner (three singles, three walks, and the HR)!

Arizona Game Log

Tyler Roberts needs to get some love on the major league site or on MiLB.com's home page after that effort; Adam McCalvy will sneak it in tonight http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Other amazing points in this game:

-- Be sure to check the log link for the two five-run first innings

-- The Brewers and Jose Romero pitched around a leadoff Indian double in the 10th

-- Brandon Sizemore out at home on a fielder's choice in the Brewer 12th

-- The Brewers and Stosh Wawrzasek pitched around a leadoff Indian triple in the 13th!

DSL Brewers / Orioles

Congrats for sqaushing the Cubs, but that last game detailed above is impossible to top; no Brewers pitched; Jhonatan Javier whacked his 17th double; Hitaniel Arias doubled and singled; Andres Martinez (single), Juan Barrini (walk), and Joan Abreu (0-for-5) all saw action...

Arias was lifted in the 6th inning, no reason given...

Sunday's Link Report should be available by very early afternoon, I realize some of the games begin early today.

Cyndi Lauper in concert last night, the 56-year-old was amazing, not Tyler Roberts-amazing, but fantastic.

this sqaud doesn't bode well for Wisconsin's 2010 success, does it?
No worries. The squad in Wisconsin won't look much like this one. It will have a completely different OF, with Davis, Richardson, and Davis. It will have Arnett and Heckathorm pitching major innings. Those 2 things alone will make a major difference. The pitching staff in Wisconson will be far more exciting than the one their this year, and this years was pretty good.
