This and that:

Is this a Ryan Braun "Rematee" that Rattlers' Pitching Coach Chris Hook is styling?

Fresno LHP and former Brewer farmhand Steve Hammond pitched Thursday, so the Sounds won't see him in their series. But RHP's Matt Kinney and Steve Palazzolo should see action.

RHP Roque Mercedes (Felipe Lopez trade) should face Huntsville at some point this weekend.

Excitement builds for Jeff Suppan's rehab start with Timber Rattlers

By Brett Christopherson

Post-Crescent staff writer

Aaron Hahn was listening to Thursday's Milwaukee Brewers game on the radio when announcer Bob Uecker mentioned pitcher Jeff Suppan and the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in the same sentence.

And he couldn't help but think, "How cool is that?"

"It's not great on the Brewers' end (because it usually involves an injury)," said Hahn, the Rattlers' assistant general manager. "But we're always excited."

Suppan, a member of the Brewers' starting rotation, is scheduled to make a rehab start for Wisconsin on Saturday at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute. The Timber Rattlers host the Beloit Snappers at 6:35 PM.

The right-hander, 5-8 with a 5.27 ERA in 21 starts this season for the Crew, has been on the disabled list and hasn't pitched since July 27.

"There's a little bit more energy, a little more excitement to have a major league guy coming to the ballpark," Rattlers president Rob Zerjav said.

Brewers pitcher Dave Bush made a rehab assignment on July 10 in front of a Fox Cities Stadium crowd of 5,433.

Hahn said roughly 750 tickets remained for Saturday's game by late Thursday afternoon, and a sellout crowd is expected. The ballpark's official capacity is 5,500.

"But we've had a few calls (about Suppan's) appearance for sure, and the last few bleacher seats and general admission grass seats are being snapped up," he said.

Final: Orem (Angels) 6, Helena 4

Orem continues mastery of Brewers

By AMBER KUEHN - Helena Independent Record

The Orem Owlz haven't lost to the Helena Brewers since Aug. 17, 2007.

They weren't about to let that streak end Friday night.

The Owlz beat Helena in a tight 6-4 contest at Kindrick Field to win their ninth straight game this season and their ninth in a row against the Brewers going back two years.

"They've handled us," Helena manager Rene Gonzales said. "But these guys don't know that."

Helena starter Adrian Rosario walked the first two batters he faced and gave up three runs in the first inning to give Orem a quick 3-0 lead.

The Brewers would score four unanswered runs, with Scott Krieger's two-run homer over the left field wall providing the go-ahead run in the third. It was Krieger's 12th long ball of the year, third in the Pioneer League.

After Orem took a 5-4 lead on a couple of hits in the ninth and tacked on an insurance run in the ninth when Helena pitcher Rob Currie was called for a balk, the Brewers put a couple of runners in scoring position in the final frame. The 1,056 fans in attendance put their rally caps on and pleaded loudly for Krieger to complete one final comeback.

Instead, the right fielder would strike out for the third straight time since his home run six innings earlier, giving him a team-high 69 strikeouts on the season. Chris Ellington grounded out in the Brewers final breath, and Helena dropped to 3-7 in the second half. Orem, the hottest team in the league - and especially the South division, jumps to a 10-1 record.

The Brewers actually outplayed the Owlz defensively, as Orem tallied three errors in an odd first inning. Helena shortstop Mike Marseco was stellar throughout the entire contest, making every play that came his way and hustling to make ones seemingly out of reach.

"Marseco's a good shortstop," the Brewers skipper said. "I think he was the best shortstop in the league last year and now that he's back I'll say it again. He is. And he can hit."

Marseco was 3-for-5 at the plate, with three singles and a steal. He also scored two of Helena's runs. The Brewers had missed him, after the shortstop had to sit out the last three games of the Ogden series after being hit in the head by a pitch.

"He might have been the difference in those Ogden games if he had been out there," Gonzales said.

Rosario suffered his fifth loss of the season, giving up seven hits, five runs (four earned) and walking two while striking out three in 6 1/3 innings.

"You can't lead off the game and start walking guys," Gonzales said. "He didn't have command."

Orem reliever Adam Clerici got his first win of the year, going three innings and allowing just two hits, no runs and fanning five.

"We're going to see these guys for the next week-and-a-half," Gonzales said of the Owlz. "I want to get out in front for a change and have somebody else play catchup."

These two teams will face each other in game two of the three game series on Saturday night. RHP Hiram Burgos (1-2, 8.33) will take the mound for Helena.

DIAMOND NOTES: On Thursday night, former Helena closer Michael Fiers got his first win in the Florida State League. Pitching for the High A Brevard County Manatees, Fiers played perfect ball. He closed out the final 2 1/3 innings against Dunedin, striking out one and not giving up any runs, hits or base on balls.

Helena Box Score

In his nine appearances (seven starts), RHP Adrian Rosario has allowed over two earned runs twice (in his two most recent) -- nine unearned runs allowed this season hint at his overall (in)effectiveness limiting the damage, but there's still promise there; C / CF Michael Roberts patrolled CF in this one; Cameron Garfield hitting just .217 in July and August after his smoking June start; a rare 0-for-5 for Mike Brownstein; day off for Cutter Dykstra, 4-for-his-last-38 -- Dykstra and Evan Frederickson the draft picks netted in the Scott Linebrink deal, sigh...

Final: Mobile (Diamondbacks) 5, Huntsville 2

Huntsville Game Summary

Stars Can't Solve Torra in Loss to Mobile

Huntsville's Green Pitches Well But Falters Late in Defeat

By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars

Matt Torra spun seven splendid innings and the BayBears scored multiple runs in two frames to defeat Huntsville 5-2 Friday night in the middle of a five-game set at Hank Aaron Stadium. The BayBears won their second in a row to improve to 20-28 in the second half and 57-61 overall, while the Stars fell to 17-30 in the second half and 55-61 overall. The BayBears have won nine of the 13 games in the season series and sent the Stars to their 13th loss in the last 16 games.

The Stars opened the scoring in the first inning when Drew Anderson singled with two outs, to extend his hitting streak to nine games, and came around on a double by Jonathan Lucroy, who pushed his hitting streak to 15 games. Mobile answered right back in its half of the frame with run-scoring singles by Ricardo Sosa and Cyle Hankerd to take the lead against Stars' starter Nick Green, who avoided further trouble by getting Pete Clifford to ground into an inning-ending double play.

Torra then took over and retired the last 13 batters he faced and 18 of the last 19 he encountered, save for a Shane Justis base hit in the third inning. He struck out six and did not walk a batter and has now gone 19 straight frames without issuing a free pass over his last three starts. Torra had entered the game with a record of 2-6 and a 5.07 earned run average in 11 previous home starts. He beat the Stars for a second time this season to lift his record to 8-11.

Green held the home side in check until the seventh inning when Matt Tupman and pinch-hitter Pedro Ciriaco strung together back-to-back two-out singles and came in to score when Evan Frey tripled into the alley in left-center field to make it 4-1 and knock Green out of the game. The right-hander suffered the loss to fall to 0-3 in three starts with the Stars after allowing five runs on ten hits. Huntsville has scored two runs while he has been on the mound. Mike McClendon took over and uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Frey to score to make it a 5-1 game.

Lorenzo Cain's pinch-hit sacrifice fly in the eighth against Kyler Newby cut the visitors' deficit to 5-2. Leyson Septimo took over in the ninth and struck out all three batters he faced to earn his second save. Torra and Septimo combined to set down the Stars in order in six of the nine innings.

The series continues Saturday night with right-hander Mark Holliman taking the mound for the Stars against BayBears' right-hander Cody Evans. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 PM central time and can be heard through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Huntsville Box Score

RHP Nick Green was more effective than his line shows, 13 groundball outs -- a couple of two-out groundball singles in the 7th hurt; only five baserunners for the Stars all game; as noted above, Lorenzo Cain didn't start but did hit a sac fly as a pinch-hitter...

Final: Arizona Giants 5, Arizona Brewers 2

Arizona Box Score

Brewers outhit, 13-5; encouraging four-inning stint for RHP Seth Lintz (only one walk), piggy-backing rehabbing RHP Josh Butler; third baseman Allixon Cequea (OBP .277) managed to reach all three times up; the cupboard is pretty bare offensively here, outside of Brandon Sizemore, there's no remaining candidates for action in Helena; trying very hard not to mention SS Carlos George's errors until we see him in Helena at some point, away from the Maryvale dust...

Final: Wisconsin 13, Cedar Rapids (Angels) 8

Wisconsin Site Game Summary

Rattlers batter Kernels for third straight win

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - Brett Lawrie had three hits and four RBI to lead the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to a 13-8 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels Friday night at Perfect Game Field. The win was the third straight for Wisconsin, their first three-game winning streak since they won the first three games of the second half.

Wisconsin (18-29 second half, 52-65 overall) scored three runs in the first inning to grab a lead. Pete Fatse was hit by a pitch with one out and stole second. Lawrie punched a single through the right side of the infield and Fatse scored. Brock Kjeldgaard followed with an RBI triple to knock in Lawrie. Erik Komatsu was next and his sacrifice fly to left was deep enough to score Kjeldgaard.

The Kernels (65-53, 25-23) scored a run without a hit in the bottom of the first. Trey Watten walked Tyson Auer to start the inning. A stolen base and a wild pitch on a walk put runners at the corners with no outs. Watten got Roberto Lopez to ground into a 6-4-3 double play for two outs as Auer scored on the play.

Lawrie struck again in the second inning. Josh Prince singled with two outs and Fatse drew a four-pitch walk. Lawrie jumped on a 3-0 pitch from Chaffee and lined it out of the stadium for his twelfth home run of the season and a 6-1 Timber Rattlers lead.

Wisconsin added five more runs in the top of the fourth inning. The first run scored when Derrick McPhearson crashed into catcher Beau Brooks to knock the ball loose on a play at the plate. Kjeldgaard followed with an RBI single. Corey Kemp made the score 10-1 with a two-run single. Erik Miller's RBI single capped the inning for the Rattlers.

The five-run frame matched the most productive inning of the season for the Timber Rattlers. They also scored five runs in the fourth inning of a game at West Michigan on May 31.

But, the Kernels didn't go quietly. Cedar Rapids scored three times in the bottom of the fourth inning and tacked on a run in the fifth. Watten got the final out of the inning to qualify for the win.

Prince helped the Rattlers add to their lead in the top of the seventh inning. He drove in the first run of the inning on a double to left. Prince took third on a wild pitch and scored on a fielding error to make the score 13-5.

Liam Ohlmann pitched a scoreless sixth inning. However, in the seventh, Adam Younger got a hold of a 1-0 pitch from Ohlmann with two on and two outs for a three-run homer to make the score 13-8.

Pedro Lambertus closed out the Kernels with two scoreless innings.

Wisconsin wrapped up their eight game road trip to Peoria and Cedar Rapids with a 4-4 record.

The Timber Rattlers return home to start an eight-game homestand on Saturday night. Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Jeff Suppan is scheduled to make a rehab start for the Timber Rattlers. Daniel Osterbrock (5-9, 5.86) is set to start for the Beloit Snappers.

Saturday night is the Timber Rattlers Tribute to Elvis Presley. Look out for an appearance by Elvis himself. Enjoy live, Elvis-infused music outside the stadium with a pre-game concert by local Kaukauna Band, 1st Degree starting at 5:00 PM.

There is also a scheduled post-game fireworks display courtesy of FOX 11.

Game time is 6:35 PM.

Almonte Delivers Go-Ahead Run In 7-6 Win

NASHVILLE - Pinch hitter extraordinaire Erick Almonte delivered a go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Sounds a 7-6 win over the Fresno Grizzlies on Friday night in front of 7,270 fans at historic Greer Stadium.

Fresno attempted to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, but Sounds right fielder Brendan Katin threw out Fresno shortstop Ryan Rohlinger at home plate to preserve the win. Nashville closer Chris Smith got Joe Borchard to line out to end the game, picking up his 14th save.

AUDIO: Brendan Katin's Game-Saving Throw

With the win, Nashville's (64-56) picks up its eighth straight victory over Fresno and stays a half game behind Memphis in the American Northern Division

In his Sounds debut, outfielder Adam Stern went 4-for-5 with a double and two runs scored. Adam Heether added three hits, including a double and two RBIs in the win.

The Sounds took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning for the 10th time in the last 20 games. Stern doubled and later scored on a Heether RBI base hit to left field.

Heether led off the bottom of fourth inning with a double down the right field line to start another rally for Nashville. Joe Koshansky followed with a base hit that moved Heether to third, with Katin bringing Heether home on a softly hit, broken-bat single over the second baseman.

The Sounds added two more runs later in the inning when Koshansky scored on a wild pitch and catcher Carlos Corporan hit a sacrifice fly that scored Mat Gamel for a 4-0 lead.

After a leadoff walk to catcher Nestor Rojas, centerfielder Clay Timpner broke up Lindsay Gulin's no-hitter in the next frame. Later in the inning, Kevin Frandsen hit a sacrifice fly that put Fresno on the board and trimming the Nashville lead to 4-1.

Stern singled to lead off the next frame for the Sounds and stole second base. After advancing to third on a fielder's choice, Heether's third hit of the game brought Stern home for another run for a 5-1 advantage.

The Grizzlies struck back in the next inning after loading the bases on Gulin. In his Sounds' home debut, Robert Hinton came into the game to relieve Gulin and allowed a two-run single to pinch hitter Ben Copeland and an RBI base hit by Timpner that cut the Nashville lead to 5-4.

Fresno added two runs in the following frame and took a 6-5 lead for the first time in the game. Borchard doubled home Jesus Guzman to tie the game at 5, and later scored on a Matt Downs single to give Fresno the one run lead.

With one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning, Corporan hit his second sacrifice fly of the game that scored Koshansky to tie the game at six. Almonte followed with another pinch hit RBI single to score Katin from third base for a 7-6 lead. It was Almonte's team-leading 13th pinch hit and third game-winning hit of the season for the Sounds.

Gulin earned a no decision, giving up three runs on two hits with five walks and six strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. John Axford (3-0) picked up the win after throwing a scoreless frame in relief.

Pucetas surrendered five runs on eight hits while striking out eight in five innings for Fresno. Alex Hinshaw (1-2) took the loss after giving up two runs in 2/3 of an inning.

The Sounds and Grizzlies continue with the second game of a four-game series at 6:00 PM CT on Saturday night at historic Greer Stadium. Sounds left-hander Chris Narveson (4-4, 3.88) makes the start against righty Ramon Ortiz (5-3, 2.49) for Fresno.
