Back to School

hammytime
I don't think it's that time yet in Wisconsin, but, here in Arizona, schools are getting ready to start the new year. My husband and I are already back at work (we're both teachers), and we greet the students Thursday morning. I was curious, since my husband is rather grumpy about school starting, what others remember about going back to school. Did you look forward to the first day? Did you dread it? Those of you with school age children, are you like the parents in the Staples commercial of a few years ago, dancing down the aisles loading up the cart with school supplies, while the children follow sullenly behind?

Don't think I was ever happy about going back to school but it was so long ago I barely remember. I probably didn't mind it much during grade school. My daughter couldn't wait for school to start through 8th grade. In high school now she doesn't dread it, she knows it just has to be done, but wishes it could be postponed a few more months or maybe forever. My son liked school through 6th grade or so, puts up with it since but no complaints verbal or otherwise. His senior year so it's going to be busy with college/scholarship applications along with the coursework and activities.

I go back to school 2 weeks from today for 3 inservice days before I do my student teaching. AHH!!! I'm anxious and nervous and excited all at once. I don't remember ever feeling this scared/excited as a student. I didn't fret the return of school, and in high school I probably looked forward to it.

I was never happy about going back to school, but I didn't care about the first day because that was basically just a waste. The get to know you crap and the syllabus was basically all that happened in the first day of classes.

In junior high and high school (my education was all pre-middle school), I didn't have much of a social life outside of school, so by the end of summer I was more or less ready to get back into the saddle.

My work nowadays is still heavily affected by the academic year. In recent Augusts I've just felt tired when I think of the upcoming school year, since it brings so much more work at the library. However, when I interview or otherwise meet a first year student who's all enthusiastic about college, it kind of restores my spirit. (Hasn't happened yet this August, but most of the kids aren't back in town yet.)

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

I'm actually really excited for my last semester of my undergraduate college career, even though I gave myself a brutal schedule. However, after school starts, it's not long before there's frost on the ground in the morning...

I HATED going back to school from about 2nd grade all the way up through high school. I'm much more of a fan of being an adult than I was of being a kid and having to deal with all of the stresses of trying to find my identity, fit in and whatnot. All of the cliques were lame, and kids ranging in age from about 10 to 17 can be some of the most mean-spirited people on the planet.

I never really minded when going back to college after the summer though.

I am also a teacher in madison. We start sept. 1st or 2nd......First week is always brutal. Beginning year 3, and I still feel as though I do not have enough stuff to fill one classroom. But the teaching itself is pretty easy, so that is good.

Why do I feel like I was more mature in high school than the kids I teach today? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

We reported today in my district in AZ...well, I had my mentoring program last Friday followed by a 4 day weekend thanks to our work furlough. So today was sort of my report date. kids enter the classrooms on Monday. I'm ready, because I'm no longer sick of kids. Wait till Feb, though, and things will change

Man, I have one full year left and I'm pretty bummed about that. I really don't feel old enough to soon be entering the "real world."

Our first day is in the books, and I didn't hear of any major problems today. Lots of little things, but that's part of the start of the new year.

For those of you finishing your education (whatever that may mean), good luck, and enjoy your final year. For the new teachers among us, good luck. The first year can be tough, it can be pretty good (mine was tough), and the second year may be the opposite (my second year is still one of my best, and I'm starting my 16th). If you can stick it out, it can be and usually is very rewarding.

I have no intentions of entering the real world...that might happen after a few years of graduate school ;-)
