Yesterday's Manatees' win deserves more detail, and the club provided it:

Wilson's Walkoff Slam Gives Manatees Win No. 999

(Viera, FL) Steffan Wilson's tenth inning, walkoff grand slam lifted the Manatees to a 6-2 win over Lakeland Sunday afternoon. Now, the Manatees are closing in on what might be the biggest milestone of their season, their 1,000th win. With Sunday's victory, the Manatees are just one win away from 1,000.

Michael Bowman took a no-hitter through 5.2 innings as the Manatees built a 2-0 lead. Bowman finished with just one hit allowed in six innings, while striking out eight. The game remained 2-0 into the ninth inning, with Jim Henderson looking to close out the victory. Flying Tigers leadoff hitter Devin Thomas reached base on an errant throw from Brent Brewer, however, opening the door for a Lakeland comeback. With Brevard County hanging on to a 2-1 lead with two outs and the bases loaded, Audy Ciriaco slapped a single up the middle. Jeramy Laster scored to tie the game, but Chris White was gunned down at the plate by Logan Schafer to leave the game tied at two.

Anderson De La Rosa led off the tenth inning with a double to left field. Schafer was then able to beat out a bunt single, giving the Manatees runners on first and third with no outs. After Eric Farris was intentionally walked to load the bases, Wilson blasted the second offering from Lakeland's Nolan Cain over the left field wall to win the game. It was Wilson's ninth homer of the season. Rafael Lluberes (3-2) earned the win in relief for Brevard County.

The Manatees look to win their 1,000th game tonight, as they close out the series with Lakeland. All-Star Evan Anundsen (8-7, 2.94) will be on the mound for the Manatees, facing Andrew Hess (6-9, 3.34). If the Manatees do not reach the milestone tonight, they will still have three more chances on this homestand, as Dunedin comes to town for a three-game series beginning Tuesday. Make sure to check out Space Coast Stadium during this homestand to see the Manatees make a run at a milestone!

It's unusual to see Schafer with an 0-fer at the plate these days. Cain is 2 for 2 with 2 RBI's. Lucroy with a double and another caught stealing. Nashville really seems to be struggling at the moment.

Edit: And right after I type this, Nashville scores 5 in the 3rd. Salome with a homerun.

Final: Lakeland (Tigers) 3, Brevard County 1

Brevard County Box Score

No baserunner for either team reached second base after the Flying Tigers scored two in the top of the 5th to take the lead; Evan Anundesn with a decent, actually strong, line; Omar Aguilar has been so dominant since his demotion from Huntsville, one wonders if he could bypass AA on the way back up; Lee Haydel the lone multi-hit night...

Final: Wisconsin 1, Peoria (Cubs) 0

Wisconsin Site Game Summary from Chris Mehring:

SCARPETTA & FIERS SHUTOUT CHIEFS; STOP LOSING STREAK

PEORIA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers ended their eight-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over the Peoria Chiefs Monday night at O'Brien Field. Cody Scarpetta pitched six scoreless innings for the win. Mike Fiers tossed three scoreless frames for the save.

Josh Prince kick started the Wisconsin offense scored in the top of the first inning. The Rattlers leadoff hitter singled and stole second to start the game. Pete Fatse followed with an RBI single for a 1-0 lead. Wisconsin (49-64 overall, 15-28 second half) would load the bases with one out in the inning, but they could not score again. But on Monday night, that didn't matter.

The Chiefs (63-49, 25-18) appeared poised to tie the game or take the lead in the bottom of the first. The first two batters of the inning reached on a double and a walk. But, Scarpetta got a 6-4-3 double play and a grounder to second to get out of the inning.

Scarpetta gave up three hits over six scoreless frames, struck out five, and finished strong by retiring the final seven batters he faced before turning the ball over to Fiers.

Fiers relieved Scarpetta to start the seventh inning and gave up a lead off single. But, the Wisconsin defense turned a 5-4-3 double play and Fiers got a strikeout to end the inning.

After a 1-2-3 eighth inning, Brett Jackson started the bottom of the ninth with a single. But, Fiers, who was 8-for-8 in save opportunities with Helena in the Pioneer League before being promoted to the Timber Rattlers last week, got a pair of strikeouts and a grounder to first to record his first Midwest League save.

The Timber Rattlers continue their eight-game road trip with the first game of a four-game set at Cedar Rapids on Tuesday night. Daniel Meadows (12-4, 3.95) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Tyler Chatwood (3-7, 4.62) is set to start for the Kernels. Game time at Perfect Game Field is 6:35 PM.

Poor Max Walla... 133 Abs, 60 strike outs.

Yeah, I know it's *way* too early for this, but, in another thread, second round busts were being mentioned. I think it was LouisEly who posted "Josh Murray says 'hi'" - and my immediate reaction was "Max Walla says 'hi.'"

Again, I know it's way too early for that talk and I'm sure Walla will come around. I'm just surprised at the initial struggle from someone who's supposed to have a short, compact stroke. You think he'd be able to put the bat on the ball a bit more consistently. Hopefully, it's just an 18 year old adjusting to the nerves of playing professionally - trying to do too much, etc. He sure had a gung-ho attitude on draft day.

Final: Huntsville 8, Mississippi (Braves) 2

Huntsville Site Game Summary

Welch Leads Stars Back Into Win Column

Timely Hitting Helps Huntsville End Skid

By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars

David Welch worked into and out of trouble for most of his seven innings of work and Huntsville scored in four straight innings en route to an 8-2 win over Mississippi Monday night in the fourth of a five-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars improved to 16-28 in the second half and snapped their six-game losing streak, while the Braves slipped to 22-22 in the second half and 53-61. The Stars won for only a third time in their last 14 home games since June 27 and lifted their record at "the Joe" to 21-28.

Jason Heyward tripled with two outs in the first inning and scored when Freddie Freeman singled into center field to give the visitors the early lead and mark the second straight day they had scored in their first at-bat. Jonathan Lucroy led off the home second with a double to push his hitting streak to a season-high 12 straight games and came in to score two batters later on a Lorenzo Cain single. Cain advanced to second base on a two-out walk to Yohannis Perez and came in to score the go-ahead run on a single by Welch, who drove in his first run of the season. Kevin Melillo led off the home third with a triple and scored on a two-out hit by Cain, who knocked in a pair of runs for a third time this season, to extend the cushion to 3-1.

Perez singled to lead off the fourth, moved to second base on a Welch sacrifice and then tagged up and moved to third base on an Adam Stern line out to right field. Shortstop Brandon Hicks mishandled Heyward's throw back to the infield to allow Perez to score to push the home team's lead to 4-1. Drew Anderson singled to start the fifth, stole second base, moved to third on a ground out and scored when Eric Campbell misplayed Taylor Green's grounder to third to extend the lead to 5-1. Braves' starter Tim Gustafson was lifted after five frames and charged with three earned runs on seven hits, while he issued four walks and struck out two. He took the loss to fall to 1-3 on the season.

Welch stranded a pair of runners in the third, fourth and fifth innings before retiring the side in order in the sixth. Matt Young opened the seventh with a triple and scored on a Heyward ground out that sliced the Stars' lead to 5-2. Welch was removed after allowing eight hits, walking three and fanning two. He stranded eight base runners to grab his sixth win of the season, and third at home.

Huntsville added three runs in the seventh against Jeff Lyman on a two-out, two-run single with the bases loaded by J.R. Hopf and a wild pitch that scored Lucroy. The Stars last scored eight runs in a game in the first game of the last road trip at Montgomery on July 27. The Stars lifted their overall record to 54-59 and squared the season series at seven games apiece.

The series wraps up Tuesday night with right-hander Brandon Kintzler taking the hill for the Stars against Braves' right-hander Ryne Reynoso. Coverage of the game begins at 6:45 PM central time and can be heard through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Stars Manager Bob Miscik ejected in the 7th after Taylor Green was called out on strikes; Jonathan Lucroy on base three more times; Lorenzo Cain a modest four-game hit streak...

Final: Helena 8, Ogden (Dodgers) 1

Helena Box Score

Best team effort in weeks? Chad Robinson (one inning, one unearned run), Hiram Burgos (five scoreless innings, 7 K's), and Jon Pokorny (three scoreless, four K's) shined; no Brewer had more than one base hit, but nearly all contributed; SS Michael Marseco left the game after a HBP in the 5th -- hopefully he's OK; much more in the AM from the Helena press....
