Sports Memorabilia Auction

Jofis11ep

Hey guys, I am on the UW-L Men's tennis team. Earlier this summer our team was cut due to budget cuts. We will be able to reinstate our team if we are able to raise a substantial amount of money. As a way to do this, we are holding an online auction on some very nice sports memorabilia.

Some of the Brewers items include a signed Prince Fielder throwback pinstripe jersey, signed Ryan Braun ball, signed Prince Fielder ball, signed Yovanni Gallardo ball and a Brewers package which includes 4 tickets, 4 Metevante Passes, A preffered parking pass and a signed Corey Hart ball.

There are also some nice Packers things such as an autographed Greg Jennings jersey, a signed Favre collage with pictures from the game after his father passed away, and a package including tickets.

Ther are also some cool Wisconsin Badger things including a Ron Dayne signed jersey as well as a signed lithograph picture of Barry Alvarez that is signed.

There is some other cool memorabilia as well. Check it out, the website is: http://www.saveuwlmenstennis.com/online-auction.cfm

Let me know if you guys have any questions, thanks!

Isn't the baseball team also being cut? Its sad that these programs are being disbanded. It would be an unpopular choice, but it makes on wonder how many programs could be kept if the football team was cut.

Probably not that much considering Football is one of the only sports that is self-supportive and brings money in to the university. They get paid oodles to go around the country and get beat up by D1 teams in the non-conference schedule.

They traveled to North Dakota last year to get beat up by the D1 North Dakota Fighting Sioux 45 - 7 and got paid very handsomely to do so.

I VERY highly doubt UW-L got paid very handsomely go to play North Dakota. And North Dakota is hardly a D1 school. 2008 was their first year playing D1-AA schools... the same schools that go play the big boys just to keep their teams in operation.

I go to LaX and have a bunch of buddies on the team. Supposedly they got paid over 6-digits, in addition to traveling expenses, to play ND.

The ND/UW-L game drew a "crowd" of 10,256. Maybe UW-L got travel and meal money. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
That's triple the average attendance of a UW-Whitewater home game (one of the best DIII football schools in the nation). So I'm not sure why you put quotations around crowd...

I know you didn't quote me, but what I was trying to say is be in an unpopular choice cutting football. I can't see how football makes money at that level, because it is so expensive to run. The revenues taken in can't be that great. Its "sucks" (lack of a better term) that sports like tennis and baseball gets cut. The prop 16 language also prohibits schools and thus not dropping too many female sports.

anyways, I hope your auctions are a success and your able to keep tour athletics. Will the teams have to raise money every year?

Yes, the teams would have to raise money every year. It looks like the two programs will be able to raise enough for next year; but then they need to raise a boatload before next May to be able to be solvent for 4 straight years so they can tell incoming freshman that the programs will be stable for at least the 4 years they'll be attending.

And we can all thank lovely Gov. Doyle for these cuts. He took UWL's auxiliary money (basically a savings account) and spent it on new financial aid initiatives for incoming students at all UW system schools while cutting programs and raising tuition for current UWL students... Sure doesn't seem to make much sense to me but what do I know.

How much would it cost to operate the tennis team as a club sport?
It would cost pretty much the same to run as an NCAA sport as a club sport. Except we would receive ABSOLUTELY NO help from the school financially. The only expenses for a tennis team are general uniform fees, some court time, travel expenses (vans, food, hotels - which are usually occupied by 4 players a room with a total of maybe 3 rooms where the football team for instance uses 2 to a room.) All of this would be paid straight from the teams pockets.

I hope you all are able to help out in some way. The auction items are very nice and I hope you bid on them.

I thanks all for your support. We are having a golf outing as well as a tennis tournament and dinner/banquet. This banquet is where the auction will commence. If any of you would be interested in participating in the golf outing or the dinner/banquet, we would love to have you. The weekend is August 22dna dn 23rd, it is fast approaching and we are really trying to get people signed up and it should be a good time and for a good cause. If you would be interested, PM me or e-mail me at Jofis11ep@yahoo.com. Thanks guys!

Just an update, the chancellor has officially reisntated both the tennis and baseball teams at UW-L for next year. Both teams still need to raise money for the future, but it is at least reassuring that we have another couple of months to set some things up!

Keep checking back at the auction website, we have some great items to bid on! http://www.saveuwlmenstennis.com/online-auction.cfm

Get your bids in before August 22nd!!

But ND isn't DIII so why compare the attendance to Whitewater?

I go to North Dakota and attended the game vs. UW-L. 10,200 isn't a bad crowd considering that the capacity of the Alerus Center is 13,500 and Grand Forks is a hockey town. UW-L traveled well. It was a fun atmosphere even though the game was one-sided. This year, North Dakota had better luck filling out its schedule. They even have a marquee matchup against Texas Tech slated for September.

Congrats on having tennis and baseball reinstated, even if it's only for a year. Good luck with all of your fundraising efforts.
