Hardy and Hart's futures with the team

T B0NE 10
I still like JJ but Melvin really blew it big time not trading him last offseason. Now he is gonna wind up getting a lousy pitcher in return for Hardy.
Because Melvin was supposed to know that a player in his growth phase coming off of back to back good seasons was going to fall off a cliff? Escobar wasn't ready and we were in win now mode, I still think not trading Hardy was the right thing to do unless we could get a very solid starter which is what Melvin was holding out for I'm sure.

If Melvin could have gotten a good young starting pitcher for Hardy last offseason he should have done it. We could have used Counsell and other stop gap types for a year until Escobar was ready. Taking Hardy out of the lineup would have hurt but much less than the gain of adding a top young arm. Melvin was negligent going into the season with the rotation we had.

This season was lost before it ever started due to awful starting pitching which was not hard to predict.

You remember how bad Counsell was last year right. If we would have went with him as a starter there would have an uprising on this board. Counsell had a lower OPS the two seasons before this one than Hardy has had this year. There are not a lot of good stop gap shortstops that I can think of.

Before this season, we heard names such as Matt Cain, Zach Grienke as possibilities for Hardy. Now, we are probably going to get a Jonathan Sanchez/Manny Parra type. A pitcher with 'great stuff', who hasn't put it together yet.

If the Brewers and Cubs had any intention of helping eachother, I think that JJ Hardy for Sean Marshall would be fair.

Realistically, a Sean Marshall type is what the Brewers are going to get. Next year will be Hardy's last before he becomes a free agent, what GM is going to give up a quality pitcher for a guy in the last year of his contract and coming off a year where he was ranked in the bottom of most offensive categories among shortstop's.

I don't see the Cubs & Brewers making any trades unless its for unused backups.
I know. I think the last deal the 2 teams made was a waiver deal for Ben Grieve in 2004.

As for trade value, if the Brewers packaged Hart and Hardy, they could probably get a number 2-3 type starter. If they were to package Fielder and Hardy, it would be hard to imagine them not getting an ace, and with Fielders deal up after 2010, thats something they should seriously consider.

Most likely he has 2 years left since I don't see them bringing him up in under 20 days. I still think Hardy nets a major league level prospect, kind of like Delmon Young brought back Garza as an example. Not an ace prospect but a decent one.
