Well, now the 2 players I hoped to never see play in a Brewer uniform (the other being Julian Tavarez) will have both done exactly that. Thanks, Doug Melvin and Gord Ash.

If Patterson takes even 1 at-bat away from Gerut the rest of the season, it will be a real shame.

I don't mind Patterson coming up...after the AAA season is over. Calling him up now makes very little sense. Gerut is actually starting to play well, Cat has been just fine in the reserve role.

I don't understand the timing at all. With Nashville only a half game out and the "winning mentality" supposed to be spread throughout the organization, this makes very little sense to me. He was playing well in AAA, would it really hurt to leave down there for 4 more days to see what happens?

It's not like he's going to do much up here that will help anyway.

From my perspective "winning mentality" means no Corey Patterson on the roster. So maybe this is why he's in Milwaukee-to give the Sounds a better chance to win!

Where is all the Gerut love coming from?!?! Gerut is playing well? Gerut needs ABs? Was it the two games against CIN and WAS? He is still batting .205/.283/.318 in a Brewer uniform, how in H-E-Double Hockey Sticks could Patterson be that much worse?

You say Gerut, I say Patterson. Potato, potato, tomato, tomato. Let's call the whole thing off! How can anyone be upset over which crappy player will get ABs in a meaningless Sept? They are both crappy!

Gerut's season has been largely deflated by his .228 BABIP, despite his 18.7 LD%. I think it's pretty reasonable to think Gerut holds an average or slightly below average bat, and a solid glove. Patterson might not be as terrible as many think he is, but I don't think he can come anywhere near the level of an average player.

Warning: arbitrary time span coming up.

Since July 20, Gerut's line is .292/.382/.500/.882. As brwrsfan said, Gerut has started to play well.

At this point I see nothing wrong with kicking the tires on players. Of course it isnt for this year, they are well out of it, so you might as well see what you have.

I agree. I would just prefer to kick the tires for the remainder of the season on somebody who might actually have a chance at being a contributor next year -- which is Gerut. Jody Gerut is only one year removed from a very nice .296/.351/.494/.845 season with over 350 plate appearances. Patterson's never had a season that good. His career OBP is .291. That's beyond putrid. If Cam isn't back, we need to see a little more a Gerut and get him as many ABs as possible in preparation for next year.

Corey Patterson simply cannot be figured as even a possibility for the future of the outfield. If he is being so much as considered, that would be enough for immediate dismissal of Melvin/Ash, in my opinion.

his .228 BABIP

I was thinking his low BABIP is a product of his propensity for routinely weakly grounding out to 2B.

What if he puts up a .300/.360/.510 type of line in September? I understand why most believe Patterson is trash for life, but its not out of the realm of possibility that he finds a place somewhere and gets into a groove.

Using THT's xBABIP calculator, you get .309 for Gerut. Do I think that xBABIP is a perfect predictor of future BABIP? Of course not, but taken with his .280 career BABIP, I find there to be little reason to expect Gerut to continue to post such a low BABIP. Bumping it up to a pretty conservative .270 (you have to figure he'll post a higher BABIP than Kendall), his line changes to .271/.325/.398/.723, which really isn't that far from being respectable, and actually isn't that far off his career averages. Like I said, he is probably slightly below average (-5 to -10 runs/season) at the plate, and those numbers would back that up.

I believe this was Gerut's 5th year of big league service, so he'll be eligible for his last year of arbitration this winter. He's making $1.77 million this year after avoiding arby with the Padres this past winter, so he shouldn't be too expensive to keep around. I don't see why they wouldn't at least keep him around for spring training.

I don't doubt Gerut is better than his numbers in MKE have shown. I also don't doubt Gerut is worse than his 2008 career best numbers. I would hope he is not in the cards for 500+ ABs next year, but I accept it as a possibility.

2008 wasn't his only good year. He had a terrific rookie season in 2003: .279/.336/.494, 22 HR, 75 RBI, 4th in ROY voting.
