Davis, Hall, Richardson and Gennett all sign

Hall should get done. Even if he claimed to be 50/50, the Brewers wouldn't have taken him that high if they any doubt getting that deal done.

Same goes for Davis, who is more of a wild card due to the Boras factor. I think that one gets done, but we may not find out about it until late Monday or Tuesday.

Not sure about Gennett. I didn't think signing Davis, Hall, Howell & Gennett was possible, but again, you never know. The Brewers aren't going cheap with their picks, that's for sure.

If Davis or Hall doesn't get done, I could see the team poney up for Kyle Hansen. BA had him in their top 200, and I think he has more potential than the smallish Gennet.

Why shouldn't we expect more signings after Davis, Hall, and Gennett? Those signings have apparently been in the works for awhile and the Brewers were still willing to spend $2.5M on Doug Davis, so presumably they have some money to spend even if it was not budgeted for signing players from the 2009 draft. There are certainly a lot of high school arms who should be a good risk(otherwise why draft them). Michael Ojala would be a good risk. Just seems to me that this is no time to become complacent. You never know when you might sign the next Hunter Pence.

Great news getting Davis signed. He was one of the better hitters available for the draft this year, but IIRC was dealing with a few nagging injuries. As a draft-eligible sophomore, and a Boras client, I thought he would be a little tougher to sign, so $1.2 M doesn't sound too bad (I heard the two sides were never far apart, and the Brewers didn't sound too worried at any point about making that deal happen).

I haven't heard if the deals are for this year or next. It would be nice to get Davis to Helena, or possibly even Wisconsin, and let him get a few weeks and 30-40 ABs since it's not a matter of keeping his arm fresh. He might even help out a team like BC in the postseason.

When speaking about the Richardson signing, Seid mentioned the Brewers checked into signing him to a 2010 contract, because they knew he wouldn't be assigned to any of the teams this year. The Brewers were told it matters when you sign the deal, not when you report to the organization. I take that to mean any contract signed between the day of the draft and today (and through the end of the minor league season) would be a 2009 contract regardless of whether the player plays in 2009 or not.

Thanks Toby. As noted on the minor league forum, none of these guys will be assigned to a team to end the year. Too bad, I'd like to see Davis and Gennett in particular get some ABs, even if it is only at the AZL level.

I'm really excited to see those two bats in particular get signed. Davis offers a lot that the organization doesn't have: A left-handed bat with pop and speed, that could play CF even if he may be a better fit in LF that could hit first, second or third in a lineup. His bat is polished even though he does have a tendency to bite on pitches low and away. He is an exciting offensive player that has some things to work on, but has already enjoyed two successful years at Tennessee and one with Team USA last summer.

Gennett is also a left-handed bat, built shorter like Cutter Dykstra, and while he doesn't possess the same kind of athleticism as Dykstra (particularly the speed), he's a baseball rat with a polished bat and an instinctive approach to the game. With the addition of Gennett and the move of Dykstra to 2B, 2B immediately becomes one of the organization's biggest strengths with Lawrie, Iribarren and Farris (and Mass may argue that Justis needs to be added to the conversation as well). That's one prospect for almost every level that could very well be on the P50 as soon as tomorrow.

For those looking to familiarize yourself Davis and Gennett past what I have provided (and I'm particularly excited since these have been two of my more favorite prospects the past several years), I encourage you to read some of the comments from my PG Crosschecker Associate Anup Sinha, who got to see both of these young men (as well as Richardson and Heckathorn) play this spring:

Will Davis open the season in Appleton?

Absolutely. If Lawrie began his career at Wisconsin, so will Davis. I would suggest that Brevard County is a possibility, but the Brewers haven't been that aggressive with any of their prospects.

The talent at Wisconsin should be impressive once again, if not better, but hopefully the overall results will be better.

BA has a page up showing what teams spent on their picks among the top 10 rounds. The Brewers came in at 10th with just over $6M. That's a pretty good haul, and while the team did have extra comp picks, their first pick didn't come until 26th overall, and this also doesn't count what it took to sign Howell & Gennett in the mid-teens.

Wow the Angels spent more than the Crew even with a token signing.
