Why not Marquis instead of Lieber

Gone

There has been a lot of talk about a possible deal for Lieber. Rumors have the Crew possibly sending Tbow AND Mench to Philly for a 37 year old pitcher who's getting paid $7 mil plus.

I realize Jason Marquis is coming off a terrible year (6+ ERA), but his previous years he's really been pretty good. My question is, would you rather have Marquis and not have to give up anything and hope that Maddux can bring him back to his career norm. Or, would you want Lieber for $7 mi + and have to give up Mench and Tbow?

I guess I would want Marquis and I'm not sure why the Crew wouldn't explore that option first before a trade.

Marquis will probably demand about 10 million dollars per in this ridiculous free agent environment.

I'm guessing more than that, Lilly got $10 million and has a career 162 Avg. ERA of 4.60, While Marquis has one of 4.55, granted Lilly is a lefty and has been an all star, but he won't come for very cheap.

I like Marquis. I have to believe he will improve over this past year. Although, La Russa lost all confidence in him and doesn't want him back.

I also like Mulder. I have no idea how good Mulder will be after his surgery or when he'll return, but several teams are talking to him, so they must feel he will be ready.

I've got no idea of much much money each pitcher would demand to be paid. I think both pitchers are better than Mench, Lieber and Lilly.

how's my typing?

I guess I can see why some may think Marquis will still get a good contract.

My thinking was that he's coming off a really poor year and really didn't have an "excuse" (injury, etc). I thought he'd be a guy looking at signing a short term deal, hopefully improve his production and cash in next year.

Other points are definately valid as t his is a crazy year for Free Agency. I guess I have a hard time gauging it

I say let Sheets go via trade or free agency when his time is up and sign Marquis to a market average deal for a pitcher coming off of a season with a 6.00+ ERA and 3 of the past 5 years of ERA over 5.00, to a 4 year 44 million dollar deal. At least we can count on 225 innings of below average innings, which is more than I can say for the EXTREMELY overpaid and disappointing Ben Sheets.

Do I really need to put that in blue font?

I would love to add Marquis, however, I can't imagine us getting him.

Remember, his numbers are horribly skewed because of two outings when he got shelled. He was hit so hard because the night before the previous start got lit up. He took one (or two) for the team, and didn't complain. The rest of the time he's more than adequate.

And also remember even if you take out those two starts his numbers are still bad.

184.2 IP/5.12 ERA/1.44 WHIP/72 BB's/89 K's

He's not better than what we currently have and will cost a lot of money to be mediocre.
