Tim Cuprisin one of many MJ/S employees taking voluntary retirement

It just seemed to me that he always just copied articles that you can find on any major site from the day before. I never learned anything new from him at all. I always was admittedly jealous of his job. It seemed like one of the easiest in the world.

OK....fill me in on a site.

But, Eileen, did you learn anything from Dave Tianen?

He just gave his opinion on concerts if I got this guy correct

Yahoo.com, ew.com, pollstar.com, usatoday.com, variety.com, billboard.com to name a few. There have been many days where I saw some entertainment news in the USA Today and Tim Cuprisin would have it in his article the next day. Pretty easy money if you ask me. I was honest when I stated that I was jealous of his job.

Plus you can Google or Wikipedia anything you need to find out about a certain show, actor, actress, rating, etc.

If you read my post, I never said I learned anything from Dave Tianen. You are implying things here. I said that I thought his job was one of the coolest in Milwaukee and an easy one. I did always like to read his reviews of concerts that I went to and compare what he thought of it to what I thought of it. I also would like to read his reviews of concerts that I didn't go to that I was interested in. I was always jealous of his job too.

The shrinking of the Journal Sentinel staff is depressing to me. I think there's still room in the world for newspapers with a strong local connection.

The problem is, all of their national and international content is avaiilable online 24/7, that there's no need for them to print up day-old AP stories.

If they behaved like a true local community newspaper, I think there would be a market for that.

I probably shouldn't get started on what bothers me about newspapers nowadays (because I might not stop). Last fall, when I picked up the Journal Sentinels with special postseason coverage, I found myself actually surprised that the MJS still had local content, and then sad to have that be a surprise.

The Wisconsin State Journal is fast becoming little besides AP stories, advertising flyers, and Badger/Packer coverage.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

Yeah where to begin?

The only thing the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has to offer that I can't find on the internet is stong local angles and columnists. The late Dennis Getto was more important to my reading the paper than reprinting some AP story. And that seems to be the first thing they cut.

The ever shrinking comics page is another thing I'll take issue with. Go find a comic geek friend with a glorious copy of DC's Wednesday Comics and compare to what you get in the paper, even on Sunday. They've shrunk it to the point where it's practically unreadable. Go clear out the deadwood and blow up the strips that they do reprint to a size where you can appreciate the work and you might have something. Heck, equating Doonesbury to Mallard Fillmore (which is neither written well or drawn well and shows no ability to take advantage of sequential storytelling) and then chickening out and dropping both is symptomatic of being spineless and directionless.

I'll grant the JS that their Packer coverage is good. There's really no other state equivalent to their coverage of the Brewers, warts and all. Jim Stingl does a good job too. As well as Spivak and Bice. But, overall, it's a paper lacking an identity and strong tie to the community.
