Link Report for Wed. 7/29 -- Sounds Win, Rattlers Fall in Early Action

Final: Great Falls (White Sox) 5, Helena 4

Errors Cause Brewers Loss

By CURT SYNNESS - Independent Record - 07/30/09

The Helena Brewers were shaded 5-4 by the Great Falls Voyagers Wednesday at Kindrick Legion Field, as the Brewers were undone by too many errors.

The two teams both put up eight hits on the board, but the critical difference was under the "E" category, with Helena leading in errors, 4-2.

"How many of those five runs were unearned?" asked hometeam manager Rene Gonzales afterwards.

The answer: three.

"There you go. We gave the game away, and we've been doing that way too often lately. We've got to start making them earn it," the Brewers' skipper said.

Adrian Rosario started on the hill for Helena and went six complete innings, allowing eight hits and all five runs, although only two were earned. Kristian Bueno and Ben Jeffers combined to pitch the last three hitless innings in relief. Jeffers fanned two of the three men he faced in the ninth.

The Brewers took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning, provided by Cameron Garfield, Edgar Trejo and Joseph Paciorek.

The Electric City crew scored one in the top of the third, but the locals answered right back in their half of the stanza on a single by Josh Prince, Mike Brownstein's double and a sacrifice fly by Scott Krieger.

Great Falls then scored two in the fourth, and one each in the fifth and sixth frames, for the deciding margin.

The hosts rallied for a run in the eighth, on Brownstein's walk and a steal of second, Krieger reaching on a groundball error, and Chris Ellington's sacrifice fly to center field.

Pacing the Voyagers attack on the evening were Kevin Dubler (2-for-3, two doubles), Jesus Avilla (2-4, double) and Johnny Celis (2-4).

The visitor's Ryan Hamme, who came in as a pinch runner for Kyle Colligan in the sixth, scored on one of Dubler's two-baggers. Hamme is a college teammate of former Helena Senators legion standout Quinn LeSage. LeSage and Hamme both played for North Carolina's Campbell University Camels a few years back.

Justin Collop started for the Voyagers and went five innings for the win. He was relieved by Brandon Kloess, who pitched the rest of the way to earn the save.

The Capital City group was led offensively by Garfield and Cutter Dykstra, with two hits apiece.

Great Falls improves to 19-15, sharing the Pioneer League's Northern Division lead with Missoula. Helena is two games back in third place, at 17-17.

The two clubs meet again tonight at Kindrick, beginning at 7:05.

Helena Box Score

The H-Crew really let this one slip a away which hurts the team's 1st half playoff chase as costly errors sunk the Brewers in this game, Paciorek's error on what sounded like a routine play, Garfield's error on a Strike Out to the next batter both led to unearned runs. Later in the game Trejo isn't able to find the bag with his foot for an error, that runner eventually came around to score as well. As I noted above Rosario needs to throw something other than a get me over fastball as the first pitch, when he got hit, that's mostly what they hit. Have I mentioned Brownstein is the man? He plays solid D EVERYWHERE, is a heady player, is productive at the plate and on the basepaths. Mike was 1 for 3 with a 2B and a SB Garfield is back smacking the ball around after that homer got him back on track yesterday, he went 2 for 4 today with a SB, Dykstra also went 2 for 4 with a SB.

Media-wise, one of the bigger disappointments of the season is that the two local papers in Nashville, particularly the Tennessean, have abandoned any semblance of covering the team at all. Obviously you're only going to get coverage on all levels for home games, but the Sounds may as well be the Manatees in terms of ink these days. Virtually nothing, maybe a feature article one or twice a month.

You would think that the Sounds marketing would be throwing freebees at the newpaper reporters to get them to attend more games or simply write some more. Having articles in the sports section is free advertizing for the team. The LaCrosse Loggers have articles in the paper and highlights on the news all the time.
