Link Report Bonus -- to the Archives!

I definitely have a soft spot for the independent leaguers, so I'm looking forward to Brandon Kintzler's debut with the Stars tonight. Whenever we have a game like that, I think back to one of the most unique days in Stars' history -- Sunday, July 20th, 2003.

Game One: Huntsville 10, West Tenn (Cubs) 0

Game Two: Huntsville 1, West Tenn 0

Pretty much what will go down as a very special night in Stars' history, as team historian and ultra-fan David Weiser would most certainly agree.

Following up LHP Jeff Housman's scintillatingly efficient AA debut, 26-year-old Jason Shelley, fresh from absolutely dominating Frontier League competition for a year and a half now, tosses a complete game, three-hit, ten strikeout, seven-inning shutout as Huntsville wins a squeaker in game two of Sunday's twinbill.

Shelly mixed a 90-92 MPH fastball with two out pitches, what he himself deemed a "slurve", and a very effective and seemingly nasty splitter.

Even at age 26, it's a wonder that no one plucked Shelley from the independent ranks prior to this.

They'll be talking about this evening for a long time in Huntsville.

It is such a hoot to go back and look at old Link Reports, particularly the one for that day. Prince Fielder nearly killed a catcher in Beloit in a home plate collision (no, not the infamous Chattanooga photograph -- that was later in AA), Corey Hart updates, Chris Saenz, ah yes, all good times.

Pleased to report that TheCrew07 has kindly responded to my request to take on an evening of summaries as your guest Link Reporter tonight. He's been a wonderful contributor here this season, and will allow me to kick back a bit this evening and enjoy Carlos Villanueva's upcoming perfect game. Thanks in advance!

Peralta gives up a HR on the 2nd pitch of the game... the T-Rats staff has been giving up HRs in bunches lately.

Mark Rogers is rolling again tonight. He just keeps getting sharper as the season rolls along. Its pretty amazing that he can do anything considering he missed almost 2 1/2 years.

Well since X had to jinx it!!! I've been listening in and he's hitting 97 on the stadium gun pretty regularly. Rogers hasn't walked multiple batters since July 4. He hasn't walked more than 2 since June 17. I realize he was only pitching 2 innings per outing, but it's improvement none the less.

The WI feed is still in and out today, Nashville and Huntsville delayed.

edit. Check that, Huntsville Postponed.

What did I jinx? He's still doing what he's doing through 4. I doubt you can jinx a 97 MPH fastball.

Boo, Rogers goes 4 complete with a perfect game, I was hoping they'd let him go for the win.

Looks like Rogers has it down again tonight. 4 k's, no walks, and no hits. The pitch count is starting to get annoying. They need to let the boy throw. A start like that and he can not get the win. That drives me crazy!

Are you kidding me? Let the kid go another inning for pete's sake. Let him go for the win.

No one will give a rats behind how many Rogers won in A+ when he dominating in the majors. If the doctors think this is the best approach, stick with it.

The important thing is, Rogers has become consistent with his mechanics, his velocity has returned, He's immensely improving both his control and command, he's learned the art of pitching resulting in him getting loads of groundouts, and most importantly, he's healthy.

Steve interviews strength and conditioning coach Nick Miller. They discuss many issues near and dear to my heart including the proper nutrition of athletes, a good listen.

the problem with rogers is the pitch count...clearly, he's on a schedule, so you can't use him out of the pen in any traditional sense and the fact that he can only go 3-4 innings means he's not really a starter...yeah, he's got huge potential, but all the question marks remain...
