Streaking Brewers return for homestand sitting in first place

By JASON SCOTT - Helena Independent Record

It's about as short a homestand as you're likely to see.

The Helena Brewers begin a two-game home stint as they take on the Great Falls Voyagers starting tonight in the friendly confines of Kindrick Legion Field.

Helena returns while in lone possession of first place in the Pioneer League North division. The Brewers, at 15-12, are one game up on the Missoula Osprey and Great Falls. Billings rounds out the division at 8-17. The Idaho Falls Chukars lead the South with a 16-9 record, while the Ogden Raptors are in second at 16-11.

Though the homestand is only two games long, the Brewers will face the Voyagers in four straight. Saturday, Helena will travel to the Electric City for two games before two in Missoula.

The Brewers have won two straight games and four of their last five. Helena has outscored opponents 32-23 during that stretch. In the last 10 games, the Brewers have six wins. In that time, the top two batters in the Helena order, Josh Prince and Mike Brownstein, are hitting .359 and .372, respectively. Prince also has 23 stolen bases and a .450 on-base percentage this year.

Great Falls, which won against the Orem Owlz 8-6 on Tuesday, is 14-13 and has lost two of its last three. The Voyagers, along with the rest of the league, got the day off Wednesday.

Last week, Helena's Nick Bucci became the first Pioneer League pitcher to win four games when he beat Idaho Falls, then five after downing Casper. Bucci (5-0) threw 13 innings in the two games and allowed just one earned run. He also struck out 13. He was awarded Pitcher of the Week honors by the league.

Helena hopes to improve its home record of 5-7. The Brewers have relied on success on the road to offset their poor showings at Kindrick. They're riding the longest winning streak in the Pioneer League, though at .556, there's room for improvement.

For the Voyagers, Nick Ciolli is 8-for-19 (.421) in his last five games while second baseman Jesus Avila and catcher Zachary Larson also had big weeks. Both hit .417 (5-for-12), though Avila homered and drove in four runs, while Larson had two RBIs.

Great Falls has suffered tough losses over the last few games.

After falling 8-7 to Orem in the first game of the series - thanks to four errors and poor clutch hitting - the Voyagers dropped a 4-hour marathon 14-13 that saw 17 hits, eight wild pitches, nine errors, two passed balls and a hit batsman. It all resulted in a combined 27 runs and 24 hits.

Former Brewer Jerry Augustine is providing some pretty good insight on some mechanical issues Evan Frederickson is having that may be preventing him from throwing more strikes. Augustine is talking about how Frederickson is striding towards the third base bag, which is causing his arm to "drag." I've also been told that this can lead to throwing across one's body, which of course can lead to arm problems.

Overall he has a pretty slow, deliberate delivery. It's hard not to like the size and athletic proportions, but his fastball is all over the place and he really needs to tighten his curveball (his arm slows down when throwing this pitch, and doesn't seem to fool many batters with it).

Final: DSL Brewers / Orioles 5, DSL Yankees # 1 squad 4, ten innings

DSL Brewers / Orioles Box Score

Another DSL game that looks like it was a blast from an entertainment standpoint -- the "Brorioles" scored two in the bottom of the 8th to tie the game at 3-3, then the Yankees took a 4-3 10th inning lead, before Jhonatan Javier tied the game again at 4-4 with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the 10th! The next batter, an Oriole kid, homered to end it in walk-off style.

Javier was the DH here, as he is each night he's not behind the plate, OPS now at 1.042 -- yes, he was HBP yet again, this is not a recording; six different Brorioles combined to steal seven bases, but Brewer second baseman Joan Abreu was only successful on 1-of-3 attempts -- Abreu made the first out of the 5th inning attempting to steal third base, and then was lifted to start the 6th, no injury notation, perhaps a miffed manager move; SS Andres Martinez (down to .172) walked in five trips; LF Juan Barrini walked in three trips and stole his 4th base as the back end of a double steal; lefty Jose Ramos continued recent struggles, but super-workhorse closer Edwin Linares was Rollie Fingers-like with 2.1 scoreless innings for the win...

Augustine keeps saying that Peralta might make a nice setup guy, which is true enough if he never develops a good changeup, but then, after Peralta DID throw a changeup, and a quality one, Augustine again emphasized the setup role--"maybe even a closer". I don't know if that's an overvaluing of relievers on his part or what, but if Peralta throws three quality pitches, his upside is not a setup guy. That's just useless analysis.

I agree that Peralta's upside is greater than a nice setup guy, but I wouldn't be surprised if that is where he winds up. He's somewhat of a max effort guy, really raring back to throw in the mid-90s with a really nasty breaking ball, but again there is a lot of effort to the way he pitches. He throws more like a short reliever than a starter IMO, and I think Augustine is drawing the same parallel.

Sulbaran really looked good before being pulled with a blister. Former Brewers draftee LHP Andrew Bowman now in pitching for the Dragons.

Right, Peralta may well end up as a reliever, but a) Augustine didn't even mention his max-effort delivery, and b) after Peralta throws a good changeup is a great time to mention what he would have to do to continue starting, not to continue blathering about him being a setup man.

True enough. Maybe it's that sitting next to Brainerd, Augustine sounds like a genius to me http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif.

Peralta reminds me a lot of Coco Cordero.

Lawrie is one aggressive hitter. I've noticed that the other handful of times these games have been on TV, so it's not just an observation from this game alone. At least he makes really good contact with good plate coverage, and he has a lightning quick bat, but like Braun, he is going to be a lot more lethal of a hitter when he learns to take more pitches and work the count. It's important for me to remind myself that this is still his pro debut, as he does look like a natural at the plate while putting up solid, not spectacular numbers.

The announcers just noted that R.J. Seidel will be starting tomorrow night's game, taking the place in the rotation for Merklinger. It would be really nice to hear how hard he's throwing these days (hint hint http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif).

Final: Brevard County 5, St. Lucie (Mets) 4

Brevard County Box Score

Down 4-2 heading to the bottom of the 8th, Logan Schafer and Eric Farris set the table, then Lee Haydel and Steffan Wilson hit sacrifice flies (love those productive outs) before Caleb Gindl hit the go-ahead blast, his 12th of the season -- at just 20 years of age, Gindl is in the top 10 in the FSL in both OBP and SLG, that is just awesome; RHP Omar Aguilar closed it out with a perfect 9th, K'ing two; Logan Schafer doubled, singled twice, and walked; starter RHP Michael Bowman was fortunate to allow only three runs (two earned) as he allowed 13 baserunners in 5.1 innings...

Final: Carolina (Reds) 8, Huntsville 4

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

HUNTSVILLE'S HOME STRUGGLES CONTINUE

Brett Pollock, Huntsville Stars

Stephen Chapman belted the decisive home run and Logan Parker knocked in a pair of runs to power Carolina to an 8-4 win over Huntsville Thursday night in the middle of a five-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Mudcats have taken two of three in the series to lift their record to 11-17 in the second half and 48-49 overall, while the Stars slipped to 12-16 in the second half and 50-47 overall. The Stars have lost seven of their last at home to fall to 19-24 on home soil.

Logan Parker's two-out, run-scoring single in the first inning gave the visitors the early lead before Stars' pitcher Donovan Hand singled in a run with two outs in the second inning to get the game tied.

Hand struck out Zack Cozart with runners at second and third and one out in the third and appeared to have struck out Chapman to end the inning on a 1-2 pitch that was not called a strike. The former Brewers farmhand took advantage by clubbing the next pitch for a three-run home run, his second of the series, to give the Mudcats a 4-1 lead. Cozart's two-out, run-scoring hit in the fifth inning made it 5-1 and knocked Hand out of the game. The right-hander allowed a season-high nine hits, walked two and struck out two and suffered the loss to fall to 8-3.

Vinny Rottino's run-scoring double in the sixth cut the lead to 7-2 and chased Carolina starter Tom Cochran from the game. Ruben Medina took over and retired all three batters he faced, including a Kevin Melillo sacrifice fly that trimmed the lead to 7-3 and a diving catch in left field by Todd Frazier to rob pinch-hitter Adam Stern of extra bases to end the inning. Cochran gave up three runs on five hits over five-plus innings and grabbed the win to improve to 3-3. He walked two and fanned three.

Drew Anderson doubled in a run in the home seventh that sliced the lead to 7-4 and gave him a run batted in in seven straight games and in 11 out of his last 12. Carolina tacked on a final run in the eighth on Parker's second run-scoring hit of the night off of Bobby Bramhall, who allowed his first run over four relief outings. Enerio Del Rosario, who was making his double-A debut, tossed a scoreless eighth inning after yielding the run in the seventh and was followed by Phillippe Valiquette, who struck out a pair in a scoreless ninth inning to end the game.

The series continues Friday night with right-hander Mark Holliman taking the hill for the Stars against Mudcats' right-hander Scott Carroll. Coverage of the game begins at 6:45 PM central time and can be heard through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Lorenzo Cain 0-for-5 with three K's; Vinny Rottino behind the plate as Jonathan Lucroy watched; Rottino has nine stolen bases in ten attempts this season -- that's running, not throwing; Drew Anderson should be in AAA again, but the Brewers need left field with the Sounds for Adam Heether...

Final: Memphis (Cardinals) 5, Nashville 1

Nashville Site Game Summary:

Sounds Lose 5-1, Split Series With Redbirds

MEMPHIS - The Nashville Sounds lost to the state-rival Memphis Redbirds 5-1 on Thursday night at AutoZone Park in Memphis. Nashville stranded a total of 11 runners on base on the evening, going 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

Nashville's loss marks the fourth consecutive series split between the two teams at AutoZone Field.

Memphis starter Mitchell Boggs (6-4) earned the win after allowing just one run on eight hits while striking out three in six innings of work. Second basemen Jarrett Hoffpauir chimed in with three hits, including a double and two RBIs in the Redbird win.

Allen Craig got the Redbirds on the board with his 13th homer of the season that gave Memphis an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

After two straight singles to lead off the second inning, Boggs helped his own cause when he knocked home Hoffpauir on an infield groundout, giving Memphis a 3-0 lead.

Hoffpauir then added two more to the Redbirds 5-0 advantage in the next frame on a two-run base hit to left field that scored Craig and Khalil Greene.

Nashville's only run came in the sixth inning when Brendan Katin singled in the top of the sixth inning, followed by a Joe Koshansky double. With both runners in scoring position, Carlos Corporan struck out on a Boggs wild pitch that allowed Katin to score and cut it 5-1.

Jason Bourgeois and Alcides Escobar singled to reach base in the ninth inning, but Jess Todd struck out Mat Gamel to end the game and earn his 23rd save.

Sounds starter Lindsay Gulin (5-6) took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts over five innings. John Axford provided three scoreless innings in relief for the Sounds.

AUDIO: Adam Heether Double Play -- Nice throw from left field to first base...

The Sounds travel to Oklahoma City to begin the third leg of their longest road trip of the season against the RedHawks. The four-game series begins at 7:05 PM CT on Friday and will be the last regular season meeting between the clubs in 2009. Sounds southpaw Chris Narveson (3-3, 3.77) takes the hill against right-hander Luis Mendoza (2-4, 4.89) for Oklahoma City.

Nashville Box Score

Jason Bourgeois (two hits including a triple) and Alcides Escobar (3-for-5) at the top of the lineup; Mat Gamel's fielding error in the 3rd led to two unearned runs; after stranding runners at 3rd base with just one out in both the 2nd and 3rd innings, the Sounds then had Hernan Iribarren thrown out at the plate to end the 4th...

Final: Dayton (Reds) 4, Wisconsin 1

Wisconsin Site Game Summary:

THERE BE DRAGONS HERE

Chris Mehring, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Dayton Dragons scored three first inning runs and that would be enough to beat the struggling Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Thursday night at Time Warner Cable Field. The Dragons topped Wisconsin 4-1 as three Dayton hurlers held scattered eight hits and worked around four walks.

Dayton (40-56 overall, 12-14 second half) jumped out to a quick lead with three runs on four hits in the first inning against Rattlers starter Evan Frederickson. Cody Puckett drove in the first two runs of the frame with a double down the third base line. Puckett scored on a two-out single by Kevin Coddington.

Wisconsin (46-49, 12-13) got a run in the bottom of the first. Corey Kemp's two-out infield single knocked home Juan Sanchez from third base.

But, the Dragons scored again in the top of the second on an RBI fielder's choice by Miguel Rojas.

And that was it for the scoring. Dayton starter J.C. Sulbaran had to leave the game with a 2-2 count on Pete Fatse with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, so he did not qualify for the win. Andrew Bowman struck out Fatse and pitched two more scoreless to qualify for the win.

Aguido Gonzalez pitched two more scoreless innings out of the bullpen to pick up his twelfth save. But, not without the Rattlers making it interesting in the ninth.

The first two batters reached to bring the tying run to the plate. Then, Gonzalez struck out pinch-hitter Jose Duran and got Sanchez to ground into a game-ending double play for Dayton's fifth consecutive win.

Wisconsin hitters struck out 12 times in the game and would strand nine runners on base while going 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

The Rattlers have lost seven of their last eight games and have fallen below the .500 mark in the second half for the first time.

The final game of the series is Friday night. R.J. Seidel, the #18 prospect of the Milwaukee Brewers, will make his Timber Rattlers debut as the starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Dayton counters with Lance Janke (5-5, 4.09).

Friday is North Shore Bank Family Night featuring Kids eat free for children 12 and under. Children 14 and under may run the bases courtesy of Thedacare after the post game fireworks display sponsored by 95.9-KISS-FM.

The Timber Rattlers are also celebrating the birthday of Fang, their mascot, on Friday night. Fans are asked to bring a new toy for The Santa Squad Toy Drive. Toys will be collected and distributed during the holidays to children of needy families in the Fox Cities. There will also be a pre-game kickball game featuring Fang and over 25 area mascots. The gates to Time Warner Cable Field open at 5:30 PM with the game scheduled to start at 7:05 PM.

Wisconsin Box Score

Glad to see Brewer farmhands are preparing for their future big league futility with RISP -- sigh; catcher Corey Kemp singled three times; thanks, guys, for the pitching obsevations via TV made above...
