Cardinals trade Chris Duncan to Red Sox for Julio Lugo

From MLB Trade Rumors:http://www.stltoday.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=644756

Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post Dispatch reports that the Cardinals will trade Chris Duncan to the Red Sox for Julio Lugo. On his Twitter Miklasz says the Cards won't be responsible for Lugo's salary.

Duncan has a career .851 OPS against right-handers and is under team control through 2012.

I was hoping the Cards picked up all of Lugo's salary so I could laugh... unfortunately not.

Some guy on another messageboard I post on joked said that the teams didn't make this deal, Lugo and Duncan negotiated it themselves.

I would've liked to have seen the Cards get handcuffed by Lugo's contract as well...what can you do I guess.

Some who follow the Red Sox expect Duncan to head straight to AAA Pawtucket, since there really isn't any PT for him in Boston right now. The reaction on their end of the deal is similar to what I imagine the general feeling here would be like if the Brewers managed to trade Bill Hall for a lukewarm body: http://firebrandal.com/2009/07/22/red-sox-trade-lugo-to-cardinals-for-duncan.html

I wonder if there is some underlying tension between LaRussa & the front office in the post-Jocketty era. One minute LaRussa and his drunken arrogance is defending the pitching coach's kid like a little league coach that constantly plays his kid at shortstop even if he's a mediocre player, the next minute the kid's got a one way ticket to PinchHitterVille. Very odd. I wonder if LaRussa's act is getting old in St. Louis.

Duncan & LaRoche all in one day?

I had a brief moment of hilarious surprise when I read the title of this post and the first words that entered my brain were 'Cardinals-trade-Julio.' In fact, there was a millisecond in my mind where I thought they may have been idiotic enough to acquire Jorge Julio by choice. We can only wish...

Nope, that'd be the Rays, who picked him up on a minor league deal a week after the Brewers released him. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
