Rough end to Rattlers road trip

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

LANSING, MI - The Lansing Lugnuts hit three homers and banged out 21 hits in a 15-1 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Monday night at Oldsmobile Park. Wisconsin ended the six game road trip to Great Lakes and Lansing with a 1-5 record and got outscored 54-22.

Lansing (34-58 overall, 8-15 second half) broke in front in the first inning. Johermyn Chavez drove the run that put the Lugnuts up 1-0 with a sacrifice fly.

Mike McDade hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the third inning. One out later, Jon Talley hit a solo shot. Later in the frame, an error and a bad hop single kept the inning alive for Chris Emanuele. The Lansing Lugnut hitter picked up an RBI single, his third hit of the game for a 5-0 lead.

It took the Rattlers (46-47, 12-11) awhile, but they finally solved Lansing starter Chad Beck. Brett Lawrie singled with one out in the seventh and stole second. Jose Duran singled with two outs to drive in Lawrie and cut the Lugnut lead to 5-1. But, that was it for Wisconsin's offense.

But, Lansing put a crooked number on the board in the bottom of the seventh by scoring five runs with two outs. A two-run single by Luis Fernandez was followed by an RBI double off the bat of Brian Van Kirk. That double knocked Rattlers reliever Pedro Lambertus out of the game. Chavez welcomed Liam Ohlmann to the game with a two-run homer and the Lugnuts were up 10-1.

Lansing added five more in the eighth inning. Van Kirk was up with two outs, the bases loaded, and a 3-2 count. He looped a fly ball into right field for a single to drive in two runs. The ball also got past right fielder Juan Sanchez for an error to allow the runner at first to come around to score. Ohlmann walked Chavez and Wisconsin called on Rigoberto Almonte to get out of the eighth.

He would allow a two-run double to McDade to account for hit number 21 and run number 15 for the Lugnuts before getting the final out.

Wisconsin went down quietly in the top of the ninth inning and finished the season series 1-5 against the team with the worst record in the Midwest League.

The Rattlers are off on Tuesday and return to action on Wednesday at Time Warner Cable Field. Wisconsin will host the Dayton Dragons, the Midwest League affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. Lefty Daniel Meadows (11-1, 3.60) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Dayton has J.C. Sulbaran (2-2, 5.12) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 7:05 PM.

Brewers shut out Ghosts behind strong pitching

By PETE NICKEAS - Casper Star-Tribune

CASPER - One night after putting up a season-high 11 runs against the visiting Helena Brewers, the Casper Ghosts couldn't muster a single run.

The Brewers tagged Ghosts starter Ricardo Ferrer for two runs before the Ghosts even saw a pitch.

Ferrar settled into a groove and retired nine of the next 10 batters until the fifth inning, when Helena's eighth and ninth batters reached safely.

Josh Prince, leadoff man for the Brewers who reached in his two previous at bats, doubled the two baserunners home and Prince advanced to third on an overthrow by Ghosts center fielder Eliezer Mesa. Brewer third baseman Mike Brownstein singled Prince home and Scott Krieger hit his third home run in as many games, giving the Brewers a 7-0 lead.

It was Ferrer's meltdown that put the game out of reach for the Ghosts. Ferrer faced six batters in the fifth inning without recording an out before Ghosts manager Tony Diaz gave Ferrer the hook.

If there was a silver lining, it was the five innings of relief tossed by the Ghosts relievers. They scattered four hits without allowing a single run, walking just one batter.

"The bullpen looks like it settled down," Diaz said after the game. "They stopped the bleeding, they gave us a chance to come back, but it wasn't there offensively for us tonight."

Brewers starter Nick Bucci pitched six shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out four and walking three. He worked with a "catch-throw-catch-throw" pace that kept the Ghosts off balance all night.

"He worked fast, and we were unable to break his rhythm," Diaz said. "You try to do that when a pitcher has that type of fast tempo on the mound, but you have to give him credit."

After the Ghosts' 11-3 shellacking of the Brewers Sunday, Diaz spoke high praise of his team's situational hitting. But the offensive outburst was a distant memory.

The Ghosts couldn't advance a runner to third base until the sixth inning and had just five hits all night. With the bases loaded and no outs in the ninth inning, threatening for the first time all game, Nick Valdez and Jose Rivera struck out and Joe Scott flew out to right field to end the game.

"You like to capitalize in that situation but realistically, that's the only inning we put any pressure on," Diaz said.

Arizona Box Score

Rehabbing LHP Jose Romero was the listed starter, but apparently never threw a pitch; fantastic effort from 22-year-old RHP Caleb Thielbar, six innings allowing only one unearned run; RHP Seth Lintz (24 walks in 18.2 IP) managed two innings of shutout ball despite four walks, his own throwing error, and a wild pitch; SS Carlos George tripled and doubled (.295, .791 OPS) and is also displaying better defense; rehabbing OF Erik Komatsu singled and hit a sacrifice fly in his five innings of work...

DSL Brewers / Orioles Box Score

Closer Edwin Linares fell to 2-4 with his third blown save, allowing two inherited runners to score and then three (unearned) of his own in a disastrous five-run Blue Jay 8th inning that defies description with three errors, two wild pitches an HBP, a runner out at the plate, and a partridge in a pear tree; Jhonatan Javier was your DH, and yes, was HBP again -- the 14th time in 165 AB's; SS Andres Martinez a late pinch-hit strikeout...
