Wouldn't Another Solid Reliever Be Splendid?

No, I'm not calling for McClung or Villanueva to be DFA'd but I think one more solid reliever in the Todd Coffey mold would be absolutely terrific. Chris Smith seems all right on the surface but 6 HR in 23.1 innings scares me. He's given up 7 total runs and 6 HR. Once there are a few guys on base when he gives up the HR his ERA will rise accordingly.

Now if we're going to look at acquiring somebody to push Villanueva and McClung into lower leverage roles, we'd need to be getting somebody that is, you know, actually better than them. Danys Baez is available, but how much of an upgrade would that be, if at all?

Taking a look at MLB Trade Rumor's Relief Pitcher Trade Candidates, I'm not sure what would be a realistic option for the Crew, or if there is anything else not listed that may be worth looking into. A lot of the guys possibly worth trading for such as George Sherrill are under team control for more than just this year (in the case of Sherrill, 2011). That would drive their prices up, obviously.

So, I will pose the question to you all. Is there a possible fit out there? Or maybe we can even find another Todd Coffey like last year on the scrap heap?

I think Tyler Walker would be in the mold of Seth Mcclung. I think Sherrill could be in the mix especially since the Orioles picked up Cla Meredith from the Padres today. I could see a Sherrill & Guthrie combo coming over from the O's.

I wouldnt mind going after Rafael Betancourt, Kiko Calero, or Joe Beimel as some rentals. The fact that there all potential type B free agents makes it more enticing and we wouldnt have to see McClung out there in the 8th again...

I wouldn't mind grabbing another reliever, but there are a lot of people who surf these forums that would disagree and say that our bullpen is fine as is. I think it totally makes sense to grab another reliever (if possible) because the market is ridiculous for starting pitching. Brad Penny is one of the top deadline starters, REALLY? Our current starting rotation has trouble making it to 5 innings. Ok, why don't we accept that, not gamel with our future, and get more capable arms to spread out the load in our bullpen? I agree that an upgrade in our rotation would be ideal, but it does not look like that is going to happen.
