Final: Arizona Rangers 9, Arizona Brewers 6

Arizona Box Score

Brewers scored four in the first, and it remained that way until a four-run Ranger 5th against RHP R.J. Seidel, who also didn't retire any of the three batters he faced in the 6th for a total of seven runs allowed -- after some stellar outings, Seidel likely wishes his extended rehab stint (knee surgery) in Maryvale had been moved elsewhere by now; fantastic to see 21-year-old OF Erik Komatsu back after a near three-week layoff with a hamstring injury (this coming during his wrist rehab), Erik drove in two with a single and sacrifice fly; slugging RH bat, first baseman Sean Halton, went 4-for-4 with two doubles, now sporting a .980 OPS, 2009 2nd round OF Max Walla 0-for-4 (.569 OPS), dropped to 7th in the lineup...

Arizona Game Log

After Komatsu left the game to begin the 6th, LF Jose Garcia was brought in. But he played only one defensive inning, before Demetrius McKelvie hit in that spot and took over. Garcia handled one ball in the 6th, and McKelvie fell to .030 (1-for-33)...

Final: Casper (Rockies) 11, Helena 3

Casper takes advantage as Brewers pitchers struggle

Helena Independent Record

It wasn't that Helena's bats went cold Sunday in Casper.

A dismal performance from the mound in an 11-3 loss prevented the Brewers from picking up a second straight victory over the Ghosts. It also kept Helena from breaking out of a tie at the top to sit alone in first in the Pioneer League's North Division.

The Brewers managed 10 hits and Scott Krieger homered once again for Helena. But Casper came out on fire, scoring three runs in the first inning off Brewers' starter Hiram Burgos, who picked up his second loss of the season.

Burgos allowed nine hits and seven runs - six of them earned - in just four innings of work. Later in the game, Helena's Jonathan Pokorny also struggled from the mound, giving up seven hits and four earned runs in just over two innings.

For Casper, Jared Clark couldn't have had a much better performance. The first baseman went 4-for-4 with five RBIs.

The loss didn't do much to Helena in the standings. Missoula and Great Falls also were defeated Sunday, so the three teams remain tied for first in the standings.

Great quote from Capser manager Tony Diaz --

The Ghosts haven't crept to .500 yet but have turned it around after an abysmal 2-12 start the season; they are now 8-15. Diaz expressed optimism for his team after the game, saying they've always had the character and have begun to show more maturity at the plate.

"A lot of time the record and the stats are like bikinis. They show a lot but they don't show everything. Maybe we could've probably been over .500, but I don't like to dwell on the could've-would've-should've."

Helena Box Score

Cutter Dykstra has committed ten errors in just 18 games at second base in Helena; 13 Helena base hits but no walks drawn; only one of RHP Hiram Burgos' five outings has been successful -- the 6th round pick out of Bethune-Cookman is off to a rough pro start with an 11.50 ERA...

Helena Game Log

More from the Casper Star-Tribune -- in the seventh, Brewers designated hitter Mike Roberts was thrown out at third trying to stretch a double into a triple. Edgar Trejo then doubled, but the Brewers could only manage one run in the inning despite their first two batters reaching on extra-base hits...

Final: Wisconsin 9, Lansing (Blue Jays) 7

Wisconsin Site Game Summary

Rattlers rally to victory

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

LANSING, MI -- Pete Fatse's two-out, two-run triple in the top of the eighth inning capped a four-run frame for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to complete their 9-7 comeback win over the Lansing Lugnuts Sunday afternoon at Oldsmobile Park. The win snapped Wisconsin's four game losing streak.

Lansing (33-58 overall, 7-15 second half) scored first. They got an RBI single from Balbino Fuenmayor in the second inning for the 1-0 lead. The Lugnuts loaded the bases with two more singles in the inning, but Rattlers starting pitcher Cody Scarpetta got out of the inning by inducing Kenny Wilson to ground into an inning-ending double play.

The Lugnuts also loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning. But Scarpetta escaped by striking out Wilson and Tyler Pastornicky.

Wisconsin's offense rewarded Scarpetta with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. John Delaney drew a walk to break a streak of 12 straight batters retired by Lansing starting pitcher Chris Holguin. Sean McCraw was next and he homered to right to give the Rattlers (46-46, 12-10) a 2-1 lead. The home run was the first since August 29, 2007 for the Rattlers catcher.

But, Rattlers reliever Rigoberto Almonte could not get out of a self-made jam in the bottom of the fifth. He walked the first two batters of the inning and a bunt single loaded the bases for Lansing. Almonte got the first out, but Fuenmayor doubled down the right field to drive in a pair of runs. Later in the inning, Fuenmayor scored on a single by A.J. Jimenez for a 4-2 lead.

Wisconsin went back in front with a three-run rally in the top of the sixth. Delaney doubled against Lansing reliever Ryan Koch with one out, Brock Kjeldgaard, at first and Brett Lawrie at second. Lawrie scored, but Kjeldgaard was out at the plate. Delaney took third on the throw home. That was a key play.

The Lugnuts decided to walk McCraw intentionally, but the first pitch from Koch was very wide and the ball went to the backstop for a wild pitch. Delaney scored on the play and tied the game 4-4. McCraw and Derrick McPhearson both walked and Michael Marseco singled to center to chase McCraw home with the run that put the Rattlers ahead 5-4.

But, Lansing rallied against Efrain Nieves in the bottom of the sixth. A two-out RBI single by Yohermyn Chavez was followed by an RBI double by Chris Emanuele to give Lansing a 6-5 lead.

In the seventh, a homer by Luis Fernandez put the Lugnuts up 7-5. But, the game was far from over.

Kjeldgaard started the rally in the top of the eighth inning with a leadoff homer. The blast was the sixteenth of the season for and it got the Rattlers to within 7-6.

The next two Rattler hitters walked and that forced the Lugnuts to go to their closer early. Matt Daly entered to face pinch-hitter Jose Duran.

Duran dropped a bunt single down the third base line to load the bases with no outs. Marseco was next and his fielder's choice knocked in the tying run.

The potential go-ahead run was thrown out at the plate after a tapper to the mound by Sanchez and that set the stage for Fatse.

He worked the count to 3-2 and lined a triple to center that scored Marseco and Sanchez easily to put Wisconsin up 9-7.

Brandon Ritchie relieved Nieves in the eighth and pitched two scoreless innings for his second save.

Wisconsin and Lansing wrap up their series on Monday night at Oldsmobile Park. Trey Watten (4-8, 4.16) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Lansing counters with Chad Beck (2-4, 6.22). Game time is 6:05 PM CDT.

Wisconsin Box Score

When you see a final score of 9-7, you hope for a concise game summary, and Chris came through for us, thanks -- that looks like it was one heck of an entertaining contest, all three hours, 32 minutes of it; LHP Efrain Nieves got the win, but wasn't particularly impressive, but fellow lefty Brandon Ritchie looks to be a keeper...

Final: Brevard County 7, Jupiter (Marlins) 4

Brevard County Box Score

Lee Haydel doubled in Logan Schafer to snap a 4-4 tie in the 7th; RHP Evan Anundsen struck out nine and walked one in six innings of work, posting yet another amazing line; defense wins -- Hammerheads five errors, Manatees zero; Chris Errecart and Zelous Wheeler combined for three base hits and two sacrifice flies as every Manatee reached base at least once; Martin Maldonado, a strong defensive catcher, with his 11th passed ball -- as with the case of Jonathan Lucroy this season and Angel Salome in the past, we need to accept inflated minor league numbers in this regard, even at AA and high-A...

Final: Mississippi (Braves) 4, Huntsville 3

Huntsville Site Game Summary

Braves Survive Late Rally to Hold Off Huntsville

Stars Strand 12 in Series-Ending Loss

By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars

Kyle Cofield worked 6 2/3 solid innings and Travis Jones belted what turned out to be the game-winning home run in Mississippi's 4-3 win Sunday afternoon in the last of a five-game set at Trustmark Park. The Braves improved to 10-15 in the second half and 41-54 overall, while the Stars dipped to 11-14 in the second half and 49-45 overall. The Stars fell to 18-10 in games decided by one run, while the Braves have split 40 of them.

Drew Anderson blasted a two-out solo home run in the ninth inning to cut the Braves' lead to 4-3 before Deunte Heath walked Taylor Green and Vinny Rottino and was lifted from the game and replaced Brett Butts, who uncorked a wild pitch to advance the two runners before Kevin Melillo struck out to end the game. The Braves took three of five in the series and trail in the season series six games to four.

Yohannis Perez singled with one out in the first inning, advanced to third base on a single by Anderson and scored the game's first run on a two-out single to right field by Rottino. The Braves tied the game in the bottom of the second when Concepcion Rodriguez scored on a Jones base hit, his first of three on the day. Stars' starter Mark Holliman worked out of further trouble by striking out Cofield and getting Matt Young to ground to end the inning and strand runners at second and third base.

Shane Justis led off the third inning with a single and scored the go-ahead run on a base hit by Taylor Green, who knocked in his first run of the series. The Stars had runners at the corners with one out but Rottino struck out and with Green breaking from first, Anderson was caught in a rundown between third base and the plate for the final out.

The Braves put runners at the corners with nobody out in the fourth before Phillip Britton bounced into a force out at second base. Jones then jumped on Holliman's next pitch and drove it into the Braves' bullpen in left field for Mississippi's first three-run home run of the season and a 4-2 lead. Holliman was lifted after another force play at second base and replaced by David Welch, who got Jason Heyward to fly out to end the frame. Holliman was charged with six hits, while walking three and fanning three and took the loss to fall to 7-4. Welch tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings in his third relief appearance of the year.

Cofield was lifted after a Perez double in the seventh and followed by Heath, who hit Anderson before fanning Green to end the frame. Cofield gave up eight hits, walked only one and fanned four to grab his first win since June 19 to improve to 6-3. Heath gave up a hit and a walk to open the eighth but retired the next three hitters to get out of the jam.

The Stars return home Tuesday to begin a five-game series with Carolina, as right-hander Mike Jones will start for Huntsville against Mudcats' left-hander Lee Tabor. Coverage of the game begins at 6:45 PM central time and can be heard through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

David Weiser's starsboxscore.com

The Temptations warned about trying to keep up with the Joneses. The Stars had only one to keep up with. Turned out it was one too many.

Not an imposing force at the plate (.229, .167 in July, .190 w/RISP), Travis Jones did it all this Sunday, going 3-for-3 and driving in all four runs, and making several nice plays in the field as the M'Braves beat the Stars, 4-3...... The Stars kept this close and could have had this game. Here's why.

While Kyle Cofield had the control (2/3 of his 92 pitches were strikes), seven-game winner Mark Holliman struggled with his while trying to hold on to an early 2-1 lead. By the start of the 4th, Holliman had thrown --- 27 pitches for strikes (54%), 23 for balls, including three walks and a wild pitch. The Braves left two in the 1st and left two in scoring position after one had already scored in the 2nd...... Holliman had a 1-2-3 inning in the 3rd, but seven of his 13 pitches missed the plate. It was a matter of time, and the time was the 4th.

Concepcion Rodriguez (to this point 3-for-9 in the series) singled. Then came three balls to .228-hitting Greg Creek, the first low and outside and the next two, way-high and outside. Creek wound up with a single through the infield into left..... He was forced out by catcher Phillip Britton, putting runners on the corners....... Travis Jones was next, and on the first pitch, Jones smacked a strike inside and just above the knees and drove it into the Braves' bullpen in left to give the Braves a 4-2 lead. That's all they would need....... Cofield then lined a single to right on the first pitch he saw and Matt Young walked on four straight pitches after fouling the first one off. Holliman was done.

David Welch, Bobby Bramhall, and Robert Hinton were effective. As a group, they held the Braves scoreless on two hits over 4 1/3 innings, but the Stars were unable to capitalize on clutch opportunities -- something that's uncharacteristically plagued them this month (.221 w/RISP from July 1-17)...... The Braves committed two errors in the 5th, yet the Braves were able to slip out of harm thanks to a double play grounder by Yohannis Perez, who swung at a pitch too far inside -- the only one he saw, and Taylor Green, who struck out on three outside pitches....... In the 7th, Perez lined a double down the left field line and after Deunte Heath replaced Cofield, Drew Anderson was hit with a 1-2 pitch, but Green struck out to end the inning after being ahead 3-and-0 on the count....... In the 8th, the Stars had runners on 1st and 2nd with no one out, but Heath retired the next three hitters........ In the 9th, Anderson made it a one-run game blasting a home run deep to right field with two out (his first since May 29). That unnerved Heath enough to walk Green and Vinny Rottino on 13 pitches...... Bryan Butts was called in with the tying run on 2nd. Kevin Melillo worked the count full, but Butts struck him out swinging to end the game.

The Stars left 12 on base and were 2-for-9 w/RISP....... Cofield grabbed his first win since June 19..... The Stars now have not won a series since beating Chattanooga in their six-gamer, June 24-27, just after they won the first-half title...... Hinton passed Scott Huntsman for 5th place with his 108th pitching appearance for the Stars. Huntsman was in a club- record 60 ballgames in 2000. The books show 59, but he pitched the very last inning in the very last game of the season (a 3-2 victory over Mobile), and was never included in the box score. I was not there, but I called Steve Kornya, who was doing the radio broadcasts then, on two different occasions, and he corroborated that each time....... Heyward, who was 8-for-15 in the series stepping into this game, was stopped cold in four at-bats...... Bramhall pitched three games in this series, pitching 3 1/3 innings without allowing a run or a hit and striking out five....... Shane Justis was 7-for-18 (.389) in the series, striking out just twice, and scoring four runs as the leadoff man in four of the five games..... Drew Anderson is hitting .333 since coming back from Nashville....... Taylor Green is hitting .304 since coming off the DL, but has left 29 men on base in 46 at-bats (1.58 per AB)...... Chuck Caufield left 16 men on base in 20 at-bats in the series....... Kevin Melillo is working on a seven-game hitting streak.

The Brewers, Sunday, traded former Stars outfielder Cole Gillespie to the Arizona Diamondbacks, along with Brevard County reliever Roque Mercedes for 2nd baseman Felipe Lopez. The Brewers also sent Mat Gamel back to Nashville...... The trade fills a void for the Brewers who have lost Rickie Weeks for the season due to a mid-May wrist injury...... Gillespie hit .281 for the Stars last season, but was hitting just .242 in 45 games for the Sounds this year, after starting out on the disabled list..... Mercedes was part of the Manatees' strong bullpen crew (1-1, 1.08, 28 games)...... Lopez, who played for the Chattanooga Lookouts back in 2000, carries a .305 average with him after 85 games. He's in his 9th major league season.

Tuesday, Mike Jones (2-3, 4.81) will take the mound against lefty Lee Tabor (1-1, 2.91). Tabor's had just one bad outing in his last seven appearances. Chattanooga pounded him on July 1.....

Final: Nashville 5, Iowa (Cubs) 4

Nashville Site Game Summary:

Sounds Drop Series Finale To I-Cubs, 5-4

DES MOINES -- Matt Camp delivered a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Iowa Cubs held on to edge the Nashville Sounds by a 5-4 score on Sunday afternoon at Principal Park in the finale of a four-game series.

With the win, the Cubs secured a three-games-to-one series victory over the first-place Sounds (52-42) and trimmed Nashville's lead in the PCL American North to three games.

Sunday's contest was the final game between the clubs in 2009. Nashville won the season series against the I-Cubs by a 9-7 margin.

Camp's single off Nashville reliever Ryan Houston (5-2) scored Bobby Scales from second base. Scales led off the inning with a walk and had moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Luis Rivas.

Iowa's Greg Reinhard (2-3) was credited with the win. Blake Parker, pitching for the second consecutive game, pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 11th save.

Luis Rivas staked Iowa to a 3-0 lead with a three-run triple in the first inning. On an 0-2 pitch from Sounds starter Chris Narveson, Rivas connected on a shot into the right-center field gap that was just beyond the grasp of a diving Jason Bourgeois. The triple was Rivas' first of the year.

Nashville scored single runs in the second and third innings on RBI singles by Freddy Parejo and Brendan Katin to trim the Iowa advantage to 3-2. Katin's 20th home run of the season in the sixth, off Cubs starter Mitch Atkins, capped the Nashville comeback and tied the game 3-3.

AUDIO: Brendan Katin's 20th HR

A bases-loaded single by Darwin Barney in the sixth inning temporarily gave the Cubs a 4-3 lead. Barney's single plated Jason Dubois from third base, but Scales was thrown out trying to score on an errant throw from the outfield.

The Sounds re-tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the eighth when Adam Heether delivered an RBI single.

Houston (5-2) took the loss for the Sounds after allowing the game-deciding run in his lone inning of work.

In his first start of the season, Narveson allowed four runs on four hits over 5 1/3 innings and took a no-decision.

The Sounds travel to Memphis tonight to continue their longest road trip of the year at AutoZone Park with a four-game series beginning on Monday evening. Nashville has yet to announce its starting pitcher for the contest. Memphis will send right-hander Clayton Mortensen (7-5, 4.09) to the hill.

Nashville Box Score

Alcides Escobar a busy day -- two singles, an intentional walk, his 33rd stolen base in 41 attempts, and his 8th error as a shortstop (13th overall)...
