change of scenery

Clearly trading Hall won't bring anything of value. But could the Brewers trade him for a similar player- an unperforming, overpaid player who might benefit from a change of scenery?

Looking around the only guys that I thought MIGHT be a possibility would be Gary Matthews Jr., Brian Giles, Randy Winn, Miguel Batista, Nate Robertson, and Khalil Greene. I didn't really check into length of contract, but I am pretty sure Matthews signed something like a 5 year 50M contract a year or two ago, so he is probably off the list. I guess I would like to take the chance with Batista or Robertson(because he is a lefty). Matthews, Giles and Winn are really just getting up there in age so a bounce back is less likely. Anyone else have any names?

Matthews Jr seems like the most likely possibility/match from your list, but has 2 years 20 million left on his contract vs. Hall at 1 year at 8.4, so I'd want something else back from the Angels if they would make that trade.

Brian Giles has a full no-trade clause and used that power recently to stay close to home, so he'd almost certainly be off the list.

I looked up Matthews yesterday as well.

I knew he wasn't earning his contract, but I didn't realize his production had fallen off that badly. He has a .624 OPS. Bill Hall has a .592.

Hall can play 3B, SS, 2B, and CF.

Matthews can play CF.

The difference is so small, even ignoring the money - I'd almost rather have Bill Hall.

I'd opt for Zito. I think he's coming around. He's healthy; and he's had a number of excellent starts this year. Of course we'd need extra compensation because of the enormity of his contract.

And Zito would be an enormous risk I realize, but with no pitching on the horizon, maybe a risk is in order. Zito would probably be our 2nd best starter right now. They'd also have to take someone like Suppan. Just a thought, but I understand your extreme disagreement; it is playing with fire.

I'll agree that Nate Robertson is the perfect fit here. The Hall situation has died. Robertson has the same contract, and theres a chance the chane of scenary/coaching gets him at least back to a useful lefty reliever. If not, cut him. Adam Heether would give the Brewers better depth than Hall. Its also a worthwhile deal for Detroit, as Robertson is just as awful for them as Hall is for us.
