I wonder what the story is with Billings... he gives up far too many hits for the amount of BBs and Ks...

Odorizzi is pitching well, he gave up a run last inning while I was messing around watching the Brewer post game, not sure what happened the box score hasn't caught up yet.

Forgettable pitching in Nashville and Wisconsin, but Gillespie goes yard and Cain had 2 doubles.

Rivas continues to pitch well, there's plenty of room on his bandwagon yet.... hint, hint. Gindl with a 2B, everything we read and hear about him is extremely positive, as he keeps reducing his Ks he becomes more exciting, at least in my opinion.

Ellington 2 for 2 and Garfield with a hit and RBI in addition to Odorizzi having 6Ks against 1BB (I think).

I-Cubs Erupt Late To Blow Out Sounds, 11-4

DES MOINES - The Nashville Sounds resumed play on a sour note following the All-Star break as the division-rival Iowa Cubs erupted for 11 runs in their final two trips to the plate en route to an 11-4 victory on Thursday evening at Principal Park.

The first-place Sounds (51-40) saw their division lead over the I-Cubs reduced to four games with the defeat.

Nashville grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning against Cubs starter Esmailin Caridad. Jason Bourgeois led off the frame with a single then stole second with two outs before scoring the contest's first run on Joe Koshansky's RBI single to right.

The Sounds upped the advantage to 4-0 with a three-run rally in the sixth. Left fielder Cole Gillespie led off with his seventh home run of the year, a solo shot to left off Caridad. Shortstop Johnny Raburn followed with a triple into the right field corner and scored on a Freddy Parejo single. Hernan Iribarren wrapped up the frame's scoring with a two-out RBI single to right.

Nashville starter Tim Dillard cruised through the first six innings, allowing only two hits, before Iowa got to him with a big rally in the bottom of the seventh, plating six runs to jump out to a 5-4 lead.

Iowa first baseman Matt Craig pulled the home team back within a run with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the seventh, drilling a three-run homer off Dillard. The blast, which made it a 4-3 contest, was the infielder's fourth roundtripper of the year.

A pair of errors on Sounds third baseman Adam Heether opened the door for the remainder of the scoring in the frame. The home team took its first lead of the night at 5-4 on Nate Spears' one-out, two-run single to left, which chased Dillard. Sounds reliever John Axford worked out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam with little damage as veteran outfielder So Taguchi provided an insurance run for Iowa with a sacrifice fly that increased the lead to 6-4.

The four-run lead held by Nashville in the contest was the largest blown by the club in a defeat all season.

The Cubs closed out the evening's scoring in the eighth with five two-out runs off Axford to put the game out of reach at 11-4. Matt Camp ripped an RBI triple before Spears added his second run-scoring knock of the night, a two-run double to left. Pinch-hitter Jason Dubois added a run-scoring double of his own before Taguchi plated the contest's final run with a single to right.

Iowa reliever Justin Berg (4-1) picked up the win after hurling a scoreless inning behind Caridad.

Greg Reinherd kept Nashville off the board in the eighth before Jason Waddell came on to work a scoreless ninth to secure the victory.

Dillard (9-4) took the loss for the Sounds after allowing six runs (three earned) on five hits over 6 1/3 innings of work.

The teams continue the series with another 7:05 PM matchup on Friday night. Nashville sends left-hander Chris Cody (3-4, 3,24) to the bump to face Iowa right-hander Jose Ascanio (2-1, 1.63).

Nashville Box Score

John Axford's AAA ERA is going to be skewed high for a while; Alcides Escobar resting after all his mid-season All-Star duties...

Final: Great Lakes (Dodgers) 9, Wisconsin 5

Wisconsin Site Game Summary

Great Lakes lead is too much for Rattlers

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons were up 9-1 on the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers heading into the eighth inning at Dow Diamond on Thursday night. Wisconsin scored four times in the eighth and threatened in the ninth, but the Loons held on for the 9-5 win. JonMichael Redding allowed one run on three hits and struck out seven over six innings for his eleventh win of the season.

Great Lakes (49-41 overall, 9-11 second half) had runners at first and third with no outs in the bottom of the first inning. Rattlers starting pitcher Cody Adams got Angelo Songco to ground into a 6-3 double play, but the runner at third scored on the play to put the Loons up 1-0.

Wisconsin (45-44, 11-8) manufactured a run in the top of the second inning. Brock Kjeldgaard drew a walk, stole second, and went to third on a grounder by Michael Vass. A sacrifice fly by Jose Duran sent Kjeldgaard home with the tying run.

But, the first six Loons hitters in the bottom of the second inning reached and four of them scored against Adams for a 5-1 lead. Alfredo Silverio doubled in the first run. Nick Buss singled in two more. Dee Gordon plated the fourth run of the frame with a single.

The Loons would have the first five batters reach base in the bottom of the fourth inning against reliever Daniel Meadows. Silverio started the inning with a triple. A walk to Matt Wallach was followed by a bunt single by Nick Buss that sent Silverio home. Gordon singled to load the bases and Jaime Pedroza drew a bases loaded walk to force in another run.

Pedroza and Silverio were involved in the next two runs for Great Lakes. Pedroz singled home a run in the sixth. Silverio homered against Nick Tyson in the seventh for a 9-1 lead. Silverio went 3-for-4 in the game and needed only a single to complete the cycle.

Wisconsin clawed their way back into the game in the top of the eighth inning with four runs after Redding had left the game. Lorenzo Cain lined a one-out double to left-center against reliever Jordan Pratt to send Pete Fatse home from first base. Corey Kemp walked on four pitches, but Pratt would get the second out and seemed to get the third. However, the Rattlers got a break.

Michael Vass sent an apparent routine flyball to the left-center field gap. But, both the left fielder and the center fielder lost the ball in the lights and the ball dropped in on the warning track for a two-run double. Later in the inning, Vass scored on a wild pitch to get the Rattlers to within 9-5.

In the top of the ninth, Michael Marseco walked and Juan Sanchez doubled to start the frame against Loons reliever Robert Boothe. Lefty Cole St. Clair came on to face Fatse, a left-handed batter. But, right-hander Brett Lawrie came on to pinch hit.

St. Clair struck out Lawrie. Then St. Clair struck out Cain. Then St. Clair struck out Kemp. Game over and save number five for St. Clair.

The final game of the three game series at Dow Diamond is set for Friday night. Wily Peralta (3-1, 3.33) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Josh Walter (5-3, 3.43) is set to start for the Loons. Game time is 6:05 PM CDT.

So, after being a reliever for a year plus, how many innings exactly do we expect to use Dillard before his arm falls off. Tonights game is a sign they need to back off, IMHO. Cody Adams was not a good pick.

Huntsville Site Game Summary

Braves Battle Through Wind and Rain to Beat Stars

Mississippi Victorious in Marathon Game

By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars

Brett Butts scored the game winning run in the bottom of the eleventh inning on an infield pop up in the rain that was not caught, as Mississippi outlasted Huntsville 5-4 Thursday night in the second of a five-game set at Trustmark Park. The Braves improved to 9-13 in the second half and 40-52 overall, while the Stars slipped to 9-13 in the second half and 47-44 overall. The start of the game was delayed because of rain for an hour and 48 minutes.

Butts, the winning pitcher, singled with one out in the 11th and moved to second on a check-swing infield single by Matt Young before Kody Kirkland flied out for the second out of the frame. Jason Heyward then skied a pop up towards third base that Taylor Green could not make the catch on after fighting the driving rain blowing across the field from left to right. Casey Baron, who opened the inning on the hill, suffered the loss to fall to 4-5 on the season, as the Braves won their third straight against the Stars after dropping the first four in the season series.

Trailing 4-1, the Stars loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth before left-hander Tommy Palica was called on to face Adam Stern. The left-hand swinging outfielder lifted a fly ball to left field that Concepcion Rodriguez, fighting a stiff breeze blowing from left to right, got his glove on but couldn't wrap up as all three runners scored to tie the game.

Young led off the home first against Mike Jones with a single and came in to score on a triple by Kody Kirkland, who would score to give the Braves a 2-0 lead when Jones uncorked his first wild pitch with the Stars. The Braves added to their lead in the home third when Heyward doubled with two outs and scored on a base hit by Freddie Freeman, who knocked in his third run of the series.

Braves' starter Ryne Reynoso allowed only three singles, walked three and fanned three over 6 2/3 scoreless innings of work. He struck out Yohannis Perez with two runners on base to end the second inning and was lifted with two runners on and replaced by Jerome Gamble, who got Perez to fly out to end the seventh inning.

The visitors finally got on the board in the eighth inning against Brian Dumensil when Shane Justis led off with a pinch-hit double that Heyward lost in the lights. Stern followed with a single before Chuck Caufield struck out for the first out of the frame. Drew Anderson then smashed a fly ball into the gap in right-center field that was hauled in on a fine running grab by Heyward, allowing Justis to score to cut the lead to 3-1.

Jones settled in and wound up throwing seven innings and recording 11 ground ball outs, giving him 23 over his last two starts. He allowed eight hits, did not walk a batter and fanned five in matching his longest outing of the season. Rob Wooten took over for Jones and gave up a long ball to Heyward leading off in the eighth that increased the Braves lead to 4-1 and ended a stretch of 126 frames without a home run for the home team dating back to June 22. It was Heyward's first at the double-A level and gave him eight extra-base hits in his ten games with the Braves.

The series continues Friday night with Stars left-hander Sam Narron taking the hill against Braves' right-hander Jeff Lyman. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 PM central time and can be heard through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Brewers can't hold lead, fall to Idaho Falls

By Helena Independent Record

The Helena Brewers suffered a tough loss Thursday night at the hands of the Idaho Falls Chukars. Despite leading after seven complete innings, the Brewers fell 4-3 thanks to a two-RBI triple by Idaho Falls first baseman Jason Morales in the eighth inning.

The Brewers weren't helped by the fact that they left the bases loaded three times.

Helena had at least a share of the lead for almost the entire game. Josh Prince singled in the fifth inning and stole his league-leading 21st base before scoring on a Chris Ellington single. Scott Krieger later scored to double the Helena lead.

The Chukars answered in the bottom of the fifth when Deivy Batista drove home Marvin Cooper. The Helena bats were still alive, however, as the Brewers chalked another score in the top of the sixth when Chad Stang hit an RBI triple. He was later thrown out at home trying to tag up on Prince's flyout to foul territory.

Idaho Falls scored again in the sixth to cut the Helena lead to one, then struck in the bottom of the eighth. Allen Caldwell singled off Eric Arnett to lead off the inning. After a Hilton Richardson base hit, Jason Morales tripled to left, driving home two runs. Arnett got the next two players out, but the damage had been done.

Arnett was handed his first loss of the season. The Brewers' top draft pick of 2009 saw his ERA rise to 8.31. Idaho Falls pitcher Nick Wooley got the win, his first of the year.

The loss drops the Brewers back to an even 11-11 while Idaho Falls moved to 13-7. Helena is in third place in the Pioneer League North, two games behind the Missoula Osprey.

Helena Box Score

Only one of Eric Arnett's first five appearances, none covering more than 2.1 innings, has been scoreless; Jake Odorizzi throwing strikes, doing a nice job of avoiding early-inning troubles that would knock him out, as he's worked at least five innings in his last four starts, never allowing more than two earned runs in any of those starts, with a 16-to-2 K-to-BB ratio, nice; 6'6" first baseman Hitaniel Arias with 21 K's in 56 AB's; RHP Chad Robinson hasn't pitched since June 28th -- uh-oh...

Helena Game Log

2-for-14 with RISP and ten stranded usually doesn't equal a win -- it didn't here...

I think a few Power 50 editors might have been a little too excited about Arnett.

I always contend that the Power 50 is a top prospect list, not a hot sheet. Arnett is performing poorly so far, but his upside is nearly unrivaled in the system. I saw him at 94-96 this spring with a wipeout slider, and he's a great overall athlete. If he pulls a Cody Adams and continues to struggle at this time next year, I may change my stance on him, but it's too early to be concerned about the results so far.

He tossed 108 innings this past spring for Indiana, 66 in '08 and 35 in '07.

He's pitched poorly as a reliever, but that doesn't mean much to me. Tunnell said in the audio interview that they basically just observe players in their first season and then go from there. Much like Frederickson last season, they won't start tweaking him till instructionals.
