Final: Clearwater (Phillies) 6, Brevard County 1

Brevard County Box Score

Manatees never recovered after a four-run Thresher 1st inning; former Wisconsin closer Jim Henderson stranded two of Alex Periard's 2nd inning runners (came on with none out) to save Periard from an even more disastrous line -- Henderson would go on to toss 3.2 scoreless; Could it have been worse? You bet, as Brevard turned two double plays, Martin Maldonado threw out the lone basestealer, and the 'Tees racked up four (!) outfield assists; Caleb Gindl with two of the assists, including one at home; Gindl walked all four times up, OPS now .835 -- that's just beyond outstanding for this league at his age (21 nex month); Eric Farris stole his league-leading 41st base -- he's only been caught three times...

Odd end to the inning here -- not out at the plate? Maybe left too soon?

Brownstein now playing in right field tonight. He has put up very good numbers at the plate in hits, walks, and strikeouts but not showing much pop- prospect or another Marseco?
He's not the most toolsy guy, nor is he powerful, but I really like versatility and he seems to be willing to do whatever is required. He's a middle IF who's picked up the OF on the fly, can't argue with his determination. Maybe he'll be my next Sanchez, a glue type guy that just does whatever is asked of him.

Final: Great Lakes (Dodgers) 11, Wisconsin 1

Wisconsin Site Game Summary

Loons lower the boom

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons took advantage of four Wisconsin Timber Rattlers errors to build a big lead on Wednesday night at Dow Diamond. Pitchers Nathan Eovaldi and Ethan Martin were more than up to the task of protecting the big margin and bringing in an 11-1 win. Kyle Russell, Tony Delmonico, and Matt Wallach each had two RBI for the Loons.

Peter Fatse and Lorenzo Cain hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the top of the first inning to put the Rattlers (45, 43 overall, 11-7 second half) up 1-0. That was about it for the Wisconsin offense. They would collect just three more hits the rest of the game.

The Loons (48-41, 8-11) took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Alfredo Silverio blooped in a two-out double to shallow center to put runners at second and third. Wallach followed with a two-run single to left and the Loons were up 2-1.

Russell, the Midwest League leader in RBI, padded the Great Lakes lead in the bottom of the third. His two-out, two-strike double to right with runners at first and third drove in a run. An error on a grounder off the bat of Delmonico allowed two more runs to score. An RBI double by Anthony Hatch sent Delmonico home with the fourth run of the inning and Great Lakes was up 6-1.

Great Lakes added two more runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth inning. Wisconsin committed one error in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

Eovaldi pitched five innings and allowed one run on four hits with five strikeouts. Martin picked up his first professional save by pitching four scoreless innings. Martin struck out seven Rattlers including the final six that he faced in the game.

The Rattlers and Loons meet again on Thursday night. Cody Adams (3-5, 5.34) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Great Lakes has JonMichael Redding (10-3, 4.68) as their scheduled starting pitcher. Game time is 6:05 PM CDT.

Wisconsin Box Score

Chris politley didn't mention the fielding culprits -- 3B John Delaney (twice), RF Juan Sanchez, and P Pedro Lambertus -- Delaney was actually lifted for a pinch-hitter in the 7th after dropping a foul pop in the 6th that led to two runs; Rattler batters K'd 12 times; Lorenzo Cain has been slow to get going, but it's been ten games already; three rough starts wrapped around a July 4th gem for Trey Watten, all those after a brilliant stretch in late May and throughout June...

Bucci burns Chukars in Brewers win

By Helena Independent Record

Helena's starting pitcher Nick Bucci shut down Idaho Falls for the most part of seven innings and the Brewers had a break-out batting performance to rout Idaho Falls 17-5 on the road Wednesday night.

Coming off one of the worst performances of the season two nights before - Helena recorded seven errors in a 7-1 loss to Casper on Monday - the Brewers, and manager Rene Gonzales, were happy to see nearly everything turn in their favor on an errorless night.

"We went through one of our worst games," Gonzales said about the previous outing. "We only gave them two hits the other night. And tonight, breaking out, we got 18 hits and a complete turnaround."

Mike Brownstein went 4-for-5 at the plate, scoring two runs and bringing in two. Chris Ellington and Cutter Dykstra backed him up by getting three RBI apiece. Ellington finished 3-6 with a run while Dykstra was 2-4, scoring three runs and walking twice.

Still, Gonzales said, the star of the game came on the mound where Bucci gave up just one earned run off two hits and a walk while striking out nine.

"It was all Bucci, he set the tone of the game," Gonzales said. "We had balls fall in, not all of them hit hard.

"As for Idaho Falls, they didn't have much of a chance against Bucci, because his stuff is just that good."

Bucci, who leads the squad with a 4-0 record in five starts, lowered his ERA to 3.86.

"He did not want to come out of that game, but being 15-1, it was unnecessary (to leave him in)," Gonzales said. "There's supposed to be innings and pitching he can use down the line."

While Bucci was upset, Gonzales was proud to see a fiery attitude from his top hurler.

"He's upset for being pulled from the game, and that's what you want," the manager said.

Bucci hit the corners of the strike zone and teased batters with fastballs they couldn't hit.

His only struggle came in the fifth inning, when the Chukars did all their damage against the pitcher.

Bucci gave up a leadoff double to Salvador Perez before walking Allen Caldwell. Julio Aparicio grounded into a double play, which still allowed Perez to advance to third.

He would score a run on Hilton Richardson's double before Bucci struck out Jason Morales swinging.

With the Brewers' batters pummeling Idaho Falls' first two pitchers - starter Sugar Ray Marimon and Brendan Lafferty both lasted 1 1/3 innings apiece - Bucci certainly had plenty of room to relax.

Marimon gave up six earned runs on four hits and four walks. Lafferty followed up with five runs, three of them earned, on five hits and two walks.

Peter Hodge Nielsen replaced them over the next 3 1/3 innings, having perhaps the best day for the Chukars' bullpen with one earned run on four hits and a walk.

Helena's Mitch Miller relieved Bucci in the eighth, giving up an unearned run and a hit, while Michael Fiers struggled to close the final inning, giving up three runs on three hits.

Helena Box Score

Josh Prince showed restraint in the blowout, not attempting a steal despite a single and three walks; third baseman Kyle Dhanani with a huge night, 4-for-5 with an HBP, including a double; everybody in the lineup reached at least twice but Joey Paciorek, who doubled for his one hit...

Final: Arizona Brewers 4, Arizona Athletics 3

Arizona Box Score

The A-Crew scored three in the 1st and one in the 2nd, 2008 2nd round pick Seth Lintz allowed three in the 5th, those innings detailed below; clean defense, a welcome sight; scoreless inning in the professional debut of 22-year-old non-drafted free agent RHP Andrew Dunn; just-turned 23-year-old Venezuelan LHP Jose Romero sees his first action since 2007, when he spent the entire season with Class A West Virginia, where he went 4-0 with a 4.07 ERA in 32 relief appearances and then pitched for La Guaira of the Venezuelan Winter League following the season; third baseman Wayne Dedrick was lifted after the 6th, no apparent reason but work and position flexibility for others; a tidy two hours and ten minutes in the heat helps, especially the umpires; we miss when they listed attendance figures for Arizona League games, and you'd often see single digits...

Final: DSL Brewers / Orioles 8, DSL Red Sox 4

DSL Brewers / Orioles Box Score

It was a 1-1 game after six innings; LHP Jose Ramos and RHP Edwin Linares (these guys see more action than Trevor Hoffman and the big league pen) struggled through but survived the final 2.1 innings for the hold and save, respectively; SS Andres Martinez stroked his 3rd home run, a three-run shot, and tied teammate Jhonatan Javier for the team lead -- remember the 17-year-old Martinez's name; yes, Javier was hit by a pitch again (twice!), was on base three times and added a sacrifice fly; OF Juan Barrini 0-for-1 after a pinch-run appearance...
