What are your hobbies?

bando1234

I have a pretty normal hobby. I collect sports cards, mainly football & baseball, some basketball & a few hockey. My son collects NASCAR cards. I have quite a few but nothing of great value. I do have some mid thirties Wheaties cards but they are not in great shape & dont book for much.

My other hobby is trying to learn Chess. I only play against my 13 year old son. Both of us are learning together.

My wife & kids raise, show, & sell purebread rabbits. I always thought that was different. I guess that made me think of what other people do for a hobby.

I have a decent autograph collection of vintage Baseball Hall of Famers. And lately I've started to focus some collecting on 1970s Brewers.

Other than that, I used to DJ in the 1980s and loved it, so I've pieced together a pretty good collection of vinyl from that era.

My wife takes occasional art & design classes, and my 5-year old daughter is learning to speak, read and write Mandarin.

Fun.

Bass fishing, beer, PS3, and pseudoscience.

JimH, you live(d) in a chinese-speaking country, right? I'm just curious how you're teaching your kid, because the lady friend and I want to teach any future children to speak japanese, but bilingual language acquisition can be tricky outside of an environment where both parents don't speak the 2nd language.

Mothership. . .we're in Singapore--just back after most of June back in Wisconsin. . .Singapore schools are out of session in June and back in session in July.

So my daughter learning Mandarin isn't much of an effort here. It's an English speaking country, but her school does an hour each day in Chinese. It's surprising how much they can get just be being exposed exclusively to a language, consistently every day.

I checked for how to proceed on this once we get back to home. We should be here another 1 1/2 years. . .I don't know of any public schools that offer it yet--not Elmbrook, which is ours. But there is a program on Sunday afternoons at a facility in Milwaukee that might work to help make this stuff stick.

It's pretty awesome to hear my 5-year old talk to taxi drivers.

Main hobbies are playing bass guitar in a rock cover band and listening to music. I also occasionally home brew, and have interest in shortwave radio. PS3 and Wii playing occasionally too. I also enjoy trying to stay in shape (suffered a shoulder injury a few months back which has made it rather tough), which ties in with what I do for a living.

Not as much time for hobbies as I used to have, but here's what I've been able to squeeze in: guitar, bicycle commuting, and diamond mind sim baseball at Imagine Sports (simnasium.com). I've dropped golf and softball due to time constraints and dropped running due to knee problems.

Softball and boating in the spring, summer & fall. Hanging at the hunting cabin and ice shack in the winter (just hanging with the guys, don't actually hunt or fish anymore... enjoy sleeping in the mornings too much for it to be a hobby to get up before sunrise). And have our extended camp alumni group that gets together for community service and social activities all year round.

Photography. I been doing it for a few years now and even have done some pro gigs like weddings and corporate shoots. I have a photo show in Chicago's bucktown neighborhood this friday if anyone's interested.

I also love baseball - playing and watching. I will be playing this sunday at Miller Park part of the brewers bootcamp... feel free to stop by after 12 (its free) and root us on.

I guess I got a busy weekend ahead of me!

I used to be into bowling but haven't had the time recently. I've picked up running in the last few years, I guess that qualifies. I would like to get better at storm chasing/weather photography.

Well I'd have to say my main hobbies are model railroading and online sim baseball leagues. Also do fantasy baseball once in a while. I think I've turned my wife into a fantasy baseball player as she checks her team daily and has become pretty knowledgeable about what it takes to win there.

I like to stay active, so I'll do things like running, biking, hiking, lifting weights, and , just recently, rollerblading. I've also enjoyed hitting baseballs in my free time. Turns out there's this little ball field in Hartland and I was able to do that for about an hour yesterday after work.

I'm also a big fan of taking photos and I love history.

Motorcycling mainly. The wife and I are fortunate enough to spend a lot of time out on the road. I like wrenching on 'em as much as I like riding 'em. I also like to feed the birds, and play with our 3 dogs (all rescues). Being "Grampa" is extremely cool as well.

Besides the typical baseball collecting (which I enjoy immensely), my "me" time is mostly spent researching and writing about baseball history, particularly as it relates to my home town of Eau Claire. I've been published in a couple of SABR books and even got a book deal of my own a few years ago. I'm about half way through a follow up book--this one will likely be self-published. In 2035 or so, at the pace I've been going at lately.
