For the most part, this forum separates itself from the day-to-day emotions of the big league-related forums, but my goodness, it's so much more difficult to self-motivate and recap everything here after another dismal performance. Bring on the All-Star Break, please. Anyhoo, here we go --

Final: Wisconsin 5, South Bend (Mariners) 1

Wisconsin Site Game Summary

Kemp hits; Merklinger pitches; Rattlers win

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Corey Kemp hit a three-run homer and that was enough for Wisconsin Timber Rattlers' starting pitcher Dan Merklinger. The Rattlers beat the South Bend Silver Hawks 5-1 on Sunday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field.

South Bend starting pitcher Wade Miley walked two batters with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kemp made him pay as he drove a homer to left and the Rattlers were up 3-0. For Kemp, it was his first home run since May 26 at Dayton. It was his first homer at Time Warner Cable Field since April 29. Kemp would finish the day with three of Wisconsin's eight hits.

The Rattlers (44-42 overall, 10-6 second half) tacked on two more two-out runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Peter Fatse and Lorenzo Cain drew back-to-back bases loaded walks to force in runs and give the Rattlers a 5-0 lead.

South Bend (35-50, 8-9) got their only run in the top of the sixth inning. A two-out RBI single by Rossmel Perez cut Wisconsin's lead to 5-1.

Merklinger would give up one more single before getting a strikeout to end the inning and his day. Merklinger allowed five hits, walked two and struck out six for his third win of the season.

Daniel Meadows pitched the final three innings for the Rattlers. He earned his second save, gave up one hit, and struck out a pair without allowing a run.

The final game of the series is Monday afternoon. Wisconsin sends Efrain Nieves (2-5, 6.49) to the mound as the starting pitcher. South Bend has Ryan Cook (6-7, 4.03) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 12:05 PM.

Wisconsin Box Score

We love lefties making progress -- if the plan had gone perfectly, Dan Merklinger would be doing this in high-instead-of-low-A in '09, but it's still nice to see; all of fellow southpaw Daniel Meadows' numbers (counting and peripheral) remain outstanding; OF Michael Vass sees his first action in a week, no known reason for the absence...

Nashville Site Game Summary:

Link for Brendan Katin photo, text follows --

NASHVILLE - The Nashville Sounds beat the Round Rock Express 3-1 in a rain-shortened eight-inning game at historic Greer Stadium on Sunday.

With the win over Round Rock, Nashville (51-39) takes three out of five in the series and enters the All-Star Break with a four-game lead in the American Northern Division.

Sounds starter Chase Wright allowed one run on three hits in three innings. Round Rock scored on a leadoff triple / sacrifice fly in the 2nd inning. Sam Narron (1-2) threw five scoreless innings in relief, striking out five and earning the win.

Sounds first baseman Joe Koshansky hit a leadoff single in the Sounds' half of the 2nd to start the charge for Nashville, and was brought home to tie the game at 1 on a double by outfielder Brendan Katin. Outfielder Cole Gillespie followed with a double of his own to score Katin, with Johnny Raburn singling home Gillespie for a 3-1 Sounds lead.

AUDIO: Cole Gillespie Double

Express starter Yorman Bazardo (7-4) took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits in six innings.

The Sounds take the next three days off during the Triple-A All-Star break before resuming their schedule on Thursday evening in Des Moines, Iowa, when they open a four-game series against the division-rival Iowa Cubs.

Right-hander Tim Dillard (9-3, 3.91) makes the start for Nashville in Thursday's 7:05 PM series opener. Iowa has yet to announce its starter for the contest.

Katin will compete in the American Family Insurance All-Star Home Run Derby scheduled for Monday, July 13 at 9:00 PM CT at PGE Park in Portland, Oregon.

The All-Star Home Run Derby is being held in conjunction with the 2009 Cricket Wireless Triple-A All-Star Game, a matchup between the top players from the Pacific Coast League and International League that will take place at PGE Park in Portland, OR. The 9:00 PM CT game will air on ESPN2 and Sports Radio 560 AM.

Shortstop Alcides Escobar, left-handed pitcher R.J. Swindle, and Katin will be representing the Sounds.

Nashville Box Score

LHP's Chase Wright and Sam Narron dazzled, Wright's first game off the DL with an unconfirmed ailment, likely the reason for his three-inning stint; Cole Gillespie doubled, singled, and walked...

My boy Bowman doin it up again.. I'm sort of bummed he pitched well enough to work his way out WI before I got to see him pitch, but good for him.

Final, Game One: Lakeland (Tigers) 4, Brevard County 0

Brevard County Game One Box Score

Lots of line drives in Mark Rogers' 2nd and final inning, detailed below -- Rogers has been scored upon in four of his last five mini-starts, not sure about the rest of you, but let's just get us into 2010 already concerning Mark, these appearances border on uninteresting, sorry, but glad you're healthy, kid; RHP Brandon Rapoza and LHP Lucas Luetge finished up nicely, as the 'Tees actually outhit the Flying Tigers, 6-4; Brevard wasted nice chances in the 3rd and in particular, the 4th...

Brevard County Game One Game Log

Lakeland Top 2nd

Final, Game Two: Lakeland (Tigers) 2, Brevard County 1

Brevard County Game Two Box Score

RHP Roque Mercedes has been good, but as they say, he's no Rob Wooten, and a 1-0 lead is lost in the top of the final frame, and the boys go down meekly to end it; RHP Michael Bowman had walked 13 in his prior three starts, so this line is a welcome sight; Caleb Gindl and Eric Farris teamed up to cut down a man at the plate and preseve a then-scoreless game in the top of the 5th; Manatees scored their only run of the 14-inning doubleheader via small ball in their half of the 5th...

Helena under way. Bottom of the 3rd. Helena up 3-0. The storms that passed through knocked out power in the area. I believe that they also lost the tarp that was covering the field. I caught the game in the middle of what Steve Wendt was talking about and that is what I believe I heard.

The tarp actually got picked up by the wind and got stuck up in the old light fixtures over the outfield wall, the fire dept came and helped get it down, some if it was still out beyond the OF wall at game time. I missed the pre-game watching the futures game, but I jumped on right as he started telling the story. I was multi tasking as that was right about the time Esky was getting his second AB, so I might have the details wrong but that's what I took away from it. I guess he was discussing it with O'Brien and neither of them had ever seen the wind pickup a tarp before, another new "first" if you will.

Helena Brewers 7, Casper Ghosts 3

Helena box score

Seven runs, but the only player with multiple hits was Cutter Dykstra, 2-4 with a walk; however, Chris Ellington made his one hit count (two-run homer), and Scott Krieger added two walks to go along with his safety. Chad Stang notched his first profession XBH, a double, but struck out in his other three turns. Cameron Garfield went 1-4 with two K's and allowed (along with the pitchers, of course) Casper to go 5-5 in stolen base attempts. Josh Prince got the day off (Mike Brownstein filled in at short). Andre Lamontagne tossed five shutout innings, allowing four hits and no walks while striking out one. Adrian Rosario's excellence from last time out carried over, as he struck out three in three innings, allowing a run on four hits and no walks.

Helena play-by-play

Edgar Trejo grounded into a double play with two on and nobody out in the 8th, but I bet he looked good doing it.

McPhearson has a 5 game hitting streak now, I was worried he'd struggle coming back up to WI after his hot start in Helena, but getting some hits in R+ seems to have jump started him.

AZL Brewers 6, AZL Cubs 2

AZL Brewers box score

I love that our division rival has so many affiliates named directly after itself (five if you count both DSL teams), because it's a lot more satisfying to beat the "Cubs" than it is the "Chiefs" or "Smokies". The star of this Cubs-killing was Brandon Sizemore, 3-3 with a homer and a walk; Max Walla (double and walk) and Tyler Roberts (single and HBP) were the only other Brewers to reach more than once. Jose Garcia doubled; power certainly hasn't been a problem for him this year, but patience has: his 1/18 BB/K speaks to the room for growth he has, despite his .317 AVG and .492 SLG. Wayne Dedrick had been hot before going 0-4 with three punchouts for the second straight night, but his numbers have the same theme as Garcia's (1/16 BB/K). Neither comes anywhere close to Demetrius McKelvie, though, when it comes to poor strike zone control: through his first six games, McKelvie has struck out once, twice, twice, twice, thrice, and then twice, though he did finally get his first hit tonight. Last but certainly not least, we should recognize the first great line of Maverick Lasker's short career, as he went six innings, allowing just one run on five hits and no walks while striking out four. It's great seeing six-plus innings and no walks out of the young guys, as it means they're being very economical.

AZL Brewers play-by-play

Walla got thrown out at home after his double in the first:

AZL Brewers Bottom 1st

  • Franklin Romero strikes out swinging.
  • Maxwell Walla doubles (2) on a fly ball to right fielder Jesus Morelli.
  • Allixon Cequea singles on a line drive to center fielder Kevin Soto. Maxwell Walla out at home on the throw, center fielder Kevin Soto to catcher Jose Guevara. Allixon Cequea to 2nd on the throw.
  • Wayne Dedrick strikes out swinging, catcher Jose Guevara to first baseman Richard Jones.

I just wanted to add a note about McPearson. For anyone who hasn't seen him play he's an exciting guy to see in the outfield. He can cover a lot of ground. I'd love to see his offense come around because he definately has the potential to be a plus defender.
